AoIR2022 Travel Scholarship Application - Deadline 3 July 2022

- apologies for cross posting - In order to increase the diversity of participation in the annual AoIR conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available several conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. Applications are invited from authors whose proposals have already been accepted via the conference reviewing process, as well as by PhD students applying to the Doctoral Colloquium. All applications should be emailed directly to the Association Coordinator, Michelle (ac [at] AoIR [dot] org), and must be received by 3 July 2022. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should include (1) a short (2-page) CV and (2) a statement no longer than 2 pages that must include the following information: 1. A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR 2022 conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the conference. 2. An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the conference in order to present the author’s work. Please include any information on access you have to additional funding. AoIR membership is encouraged but is not a requirement for the application. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with their circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to USD$500 (with one stipend of up to USD$1,500) will be awarded. Awards are intended to reimburse participants for expenses incurred and will be paid out after the conference. The awardee is required to provide expense receipts to AoIR in order to access travel stipends. Decisions are made on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which applicants will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR conference. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a travel award from AoIR. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also enrich the AoIR 2022 conference for all attendees. Registration: https://brussels-school.be/event/data-sovereignty-seminar-series Seminar #3: Resisting Data Colonialism: The Benefits and Limits of Data Sovereignty Description In their book The Costs of Connection: How Data Colonizes Human Life and Appropriates it for Capitalism (Stanford University Press, August 2019), Couldry and Mejias argue that the role of data in society needs to be grasped as not only a development of capitalism, but as the start of a new phase in human history that rivals in importance the emergence of historic colonialism. This new "data colonialism" is based not on the extraction of natural resources or labor, but on the appropriation of human life through data, paving the way for a further stage of capitalism. Resisting it will require strategies that decolonial thinking has foregrounded for centuries, including the articulation of new forms of sovereignty. By reviewing the benefits and limits of these emerging proposals for digital sovereignty—including the ones currently being discussed in the EU—the authors will explore how effectively this concept can inform government and public responses against emerging forms of data colonialism. With apologies for cross-posting The University of Milan, Department of Social and Political Sciences, together with Density Design (Politecnico di Milano) and the Science and Technology Museum "Leonardo da Vinci" of Milan, are happy to share the programme of the upcoming *Everyday Algorithms - Algocount conference*, which will be held at the Science and Technology Museum "Leonardo da Vinci" of Milan on 7 July, 2022. Funded by Fondazione Cariplo, the Algocount project (2020-2022) engaged in the study of algorithmic imaginaries in Italy, with a peculiar focus on processes of public opinion formation and news circulation. The conference brings together a stellar lineup of scholars interested in algorithmic imaginaries, algorithmic theory and methods, algorithmic visualization, and the role of algorithms in the formation of public opinion. Situated both in the middle of our lives and at the limit, they are deeply embedded in the life-world on individual as well as global scales. As they currently capitalize on human existence seemingly without limit, they are also mythologized as boundless harbingers of the future and as solutions to the predicaments of a world now poised on the edge. We are at a loss for an existential media theory that takes us beyond either the habitual or the sublime to shed light on how media play out their multivalent and momentous roles within our technologized existence of limits. There is also an urgent need after posthumanism to reassess what it means to be human in all our diversity, and to rethink the responsibility we bear in the face of today's techno-existential situation. In order to address these issues, and to remedy the existential deficit in the field, in Existential Media Amanda Lagerkvist revisits existential philosophy through a reappreciation of Karl Jaspers' philosophy, focusing in particular on his seminal concept of the limit situation of death, crisis and guilt which we are called on to seize. The book argues that the present age of deep techno-cultural saturation, and of escalating calamitous and interrelated crises, is a digital limit situation, in which there are both existential and ethico-political stakes of media. In conversation with disability studies, the new materialism and the environmental humanities, Lagerkvist introduces the field of existential media studies by offering a media theory of the limit situation which brings limits, in all their shapes and forms, onto the radar when we interrogate media. Existential media constitute both the building blocks and the brinks of being. Entering into the slow fields of mourning, commemorating and speaking to the dead in the online environment, she makes visible that they ambivalently offer metric parameters and caring and transcendent experiences, ultimately exemplifying post-interactive modes of being digital in slowness, silence and waiting, and spawning the recognition that existential vulnerability in loss is also a source of fecundity. Furthermore, placing the mourner—the coexister—at the center of media studies, calls forth a different ethos. Overturning rampant ideals, in both culture and scholarship, of limitlessness, able-bodiedness, quantification and speed, this book seeks out alternate intellectual and ethical coordinates for reclaiming, imagining and anticipating a responsible future with existential media.
