Wikimania is an annual global event devoted to Wikimedia projects around the globe (including Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wiktionary, Wikispecies, Wikimedia Commons, and MediaWiki). The conference is a community gathering, giving the editors, users and developers of Wikimedia projects an opportunity to meet each other, exchange ideas, report on research and projects, and collaborate on the future of the projects. The conference is open to the public, and is a chance for educators, researchers, programmers and free culture activists who are interested in the Wikimedia projects to learn more and share ideas about the Wikimedia projects. This year's conference will be held JULY 9-11, 2010 in Gdansk, Poland at Polish Baltic Philharmonic. Submissions will be discussed and selected in an informal process on the wiki. If your submission is not added to the schedule, you will still have many opportunities to bring topics forward on-site. PROGRAM COMMITTEE Submissions will be reviewed informally by a team of volunteers. TRACKS This year Wikimania will offer three tracks for submissions for members of wiki communities and interested observers to share their own experiences and thoughts and to present new ideas: People and Community The People and Community track provides a unique forum for discussing topics related to people using/building wikis. Relevant topics include, but are not restricted to, the following: * Wiki Community: Conflict resolution and community dynamics; reputation and identity; * Wiki Outreach: Promotion of wikis and Wikimedia projects among the general public; * North meets south, east meets west: How can people of a different cultural background create an encyclopedia according to common rules? Same subject in the eye of different cultures. * Special: Wikipedia in Central/Eastern Europe: this theme will provide a forum to present and discuss the latest progress of Wikis in the central/eastern European community. Knowledge and Collaboration The Knowledge and Collaboration track aims to promote research and find exciting ideas related to knowledge... * Wiki Content: New ways to improve content quality, credibility; legal issues and copyrights (is free knowledge free?); use of the content in education, journalism, research; * Semantic Wikis: The use of semantic web technologies, linked data; semantic annotation and metadata (in particular manual vs. automated approaches). Infrastructure Track The Infrastructure track at Wikimania will provide a forum where both researchers and practitioners can share new approaches, applications, and explore how to make Wiki access ever more ubiquitous: * MediaWiki development: issues related to MediaWiki development and extensions; * Moving beyond MediaWiki: what other Wiki-like platforms exist; what tools and features do we need for collaboration on different types of knowledge? * Mobile Wikis: The Web is moving off the desktop and into mobile phones, how we use wikis on mobile devices?; wiki-based Augmented Reality (AR) applications, location based services * User Interface Design: Usability and user experience; accessibility, adaptive interfaces and personalization; novel UI designs. Online Engagement Metrics

How might you measure this? Engagement: Strengthen, broaden, and diversify engagement through effective and meaningful online discussion and information exchange on public issues This is an updated (draft) goal of E-Democracy.org and applies essentially to the online spaces and experiences we host ourselves. We need your help in identifying metrics that are both measurable and that measure something useful. While there is something satisfying about simply hosting online spaces that last years while many spaces flame out in weeks or months (or are filled with flames like online news comments) "open" is not a metric that is all that persuasive with potential volunteers or funders. So what should we measure? What measures will help us track our inputs and outputs? For example "inclusion" is a big emphasis http://e-democracy.org/inclusion in recent years, so we are very interested in how we compare the results of what we are doing to in lower income/highly diverse/immigrant areas (where we have some funding) with what is happening in our all-volunteer areas (we have 10 neighborhood level Issues Forums open and suddenly 10 new ones in the start-up pipeline driven by new volunteers for example - http://e-democracy.org/nf ). Once you move from volunteer oriented work to funded efforts, the bar is a lot higher (even if you still have lots of volunteers everywhere.) So what and how would you measure against this goal? The information policy fellowship is designed recent PhDs who are interested in social, ethical, economic, legal, and technical aspects of information and information technologies with a focus on information policy and information ethics. Specifically, we are seeking candidates with research and teaching interests in the philosophy of information, critical/cultural studies of information, and/or advanced research methods. Along with continuing their own research agenda, the fellow will work closely with the Center for Information Policy Research and affiliated faculty, assist in coordination of related events, work with current PhD students, and participate in the academic and intellectual community of the School. The fellow will be expected to teach one class in the fall and spring semesters. The stipend for the fellowship will be $38,000 for a 12-month appointment beginning in August 2010, with a $2,000 research and travel stipend. Fellows are eligible for benefits. The course will focus on exploring the artefacts, structures, practices and cultures of team-based computer games through a sociology of games and sports. Students will share their research on the subject and discuss/engage with a collection of literatures and questions related to team games with the purpose of gaining some analytical and methodological tools to critically think with throughout the remainder of their research. The course will be taught of several scholars working specifically in the area of team play, e-sports, and the sociology of sports. T.L. At the same time, computer games thus evoke new sorts of ethical challenges for researchers. For example, a central research ethics question especially in Europe with its strict laws protecting personal information is: What are the obligations, if any, of the researcher to protect the identity and confidentiality of her research subjects? This concern becomes especially tricky, say, for an ethnographer who records voice chats of guild players in a MMOG. While texts from a text chat may be paraphrased so as to protect the identity of their authors in a published research report manipulating voice recordings in analogous ways may not be so easy. Can the ethnographer safely publish these as part of her research, or is she ethically obliged to disguise or conceal this part of her research for the sake of protecting the confidentiality of her subjects? The goal of the workshop is to explore the novel ethical difficulties facing those undertaking games research and this in a two-fold way. One, the course includes two panels of presentations - open to interested internet researchers and scholars, including participants in the AoIR conference in Gothenburg the previous week - by leading scholars and researchers on games and games research ethics: Elizabeth Buchanan (Director, Center for Information Policy Research (CIPR), and chair, AoIR ethics working group) Mia Consalvo (Visiting Professor, MIT, and current President, AoIR) Malin Sveningsson (University of Skövde, Sweden) Annette Markham (Senior Research Fellow, Internet Research Ethics, CIPR, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee) Miguel Sicart (IT-University, Copenhagen, and author of The Ethics of Computer Games, MIT Press, 2009), and T.L. Taylor (IT-University, Copenhagen). These presentations will provide an overview of contemporary understanding and reflection on central ethical and methodological issues in games research. Two, the workshop encourages PhD students (who attend the workshop under the sponsorship of FMKJ) to contribute their current research and specific ethical challenges in an ³extended master class,² constituted by an informal paper/poster-session designed to catalyze dialogue and debate with the invited presenters. PhD students will be asked to submit either a paper or poster. Students will be assigned to a working group of no more than 3 students plus one or two of the senior workshop presenters. Each student will have 10 minutes to present his/her paper/poster, followed by comments from a designated respondent. The attending senior scholar(s) will then offer additional comments and continue open discussion, for a total time of 1.5 hours. If enough students participate, you will also be able to attend / audit a second such class. In these ways, we anticipate that PhD students will receive useful advice and guidance and that you in turn will contribute your work from the praxis of your research to the reflections and frameworks continuously being developed by the invited presenters. Final reminder: the deadline for submissions is 1 May 2010 Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media http://www.digitalicons.org/ **Call for proposals for the Special Issue War, Conflict and Commemoration in the Age of Digital Reproduction ( Autumn 2010)** Wars, conflicts and commemoration occupy the minds of today's users of new media across the globe, especially those in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe: from digital accounts of 'wars on terror' to virtual museums of political terror under communism; from cyberwars against websites and databases to computer war games; from on-line anti-war organising to virtual memorials to WWII soldiers; from photo-and video- reporting on warfare in Kosovo, Chechnya, Gaza or Georgia to flash-mobs of political protest or racist incitement; from digitalised personal memories and family histories to YouTube clips featuring victorious presidential speeches. The aim of this special issue is to explore the ways wars and conflicts are mediated, commemorated, reported and discussed on the Internet as well as in other forms of new media, including mobile phones, digital broadcasting and computer games. What is the role of new media in understanding, representing, negotiating and remembering (or forgetting) war and terror? And lastly, how can the embodied, physical violence intensify in digital interactions, and how can it be resisted? This special issue of Digital Icons aims to create a forum for scholars working in the fields of war, conflict, commemoration, digital media, and new media, while simultaneously addressing linguistic, cultural, historical and political aspects of new media use in Russia, Eurasia and Central Europe. We invite original articles that focus on one or more countries of the region, or on their diasporas. We also welcome theoretical essays, reflection by media practitioners on their own practices, contributions from artists and authors, and reviews of relevant projects, books and events.
