Christina - my experience has been that this kind of "encounters" on-list as well as responses from individuals off-list, while studying online "communities" are quite common. I have had several such experiences myself, one such led to my dissertation (1998 - see http://www.cyberdiva.org/erniestuff/sanov.html) Of course, the reasons for these encounters are often complex and cannot be generalized across all virtual "communities" since each such community is contextually situated within larger "rl" communities that give rise to situations and issues that perhaps the academics/researchers (and even the list participants themselves) have not considered in depth prior to the attempting the study ( this may not even be possible to do prior to launching your investigation...). Off-list, I will be glad to answer more questions. good luck r At 04:18 PM 7/25/01 -0400, you wrote: >Hi Folks: >In investigating quite a different phenomenon, I stumbled across an >email list with two quite different contributors to it--both academics >interested in talking about the topic on an academic level, and >non-academics that seem interested in enthusing and speculating about >the subject rather than studying it. e-mial lists and/as communities

Hi Folks: In investigating quite a different phenomenon, I stumbled across an email list with two quite different contributors to it--both academics interested in talking about the topic on an academic level, and non-academics that seem interested in enthusing and speculating about the subject rather than studying it. Whatever the case, friction has arisen; mostly, non-academics have taken umbrage with the academics, often just for getting into debates (though some are quite heated). Of course, they need not do so--the non-academics could simply "talk amongst themselves," etc. Rather, they treat every contributor as though they should see themselves as members of one community that is governed by one particular ethic. (Hmmm, maybe I did that by my address form above.) Anybody know of research done that talks about this--that is, that talks about this assumption of close community on e-mail lists? Thanks for any suggestions! --Christian Nelson

Internet Paradox Revisited
by Reinhold Grether 24 Jul '01

24 Jul '01

Kraut, R., Kiesler,S., Boneva, B., Cummings, J., Helgeson, V. & Crawford, A. (In press). Journal of Social Issues. Kraut et al. (1998) reported small but reliable negative effects of using the Internet on measures of social involvement and psychological well-being among new Internet users in 1995-1996. We called the effects a paradox because participants used the Internet heavily for communication, which generally has positive effects. A 3-year follow-up of the original sample found that negative effects dissipated. We also report findings from a longitudinal study in 1998-99 of new computer and television purchasers. This sample experienced overall positive effects of using the Internet on communication, social involvement, and well-being. Consistent with a rich get richer model, the Internet generally predicted better outcomes for extraverts and those with more social support but worse outcomes for introverts or those with less support. You can request a preprint of this paper by sending email to marilyn.jameson(a)cs.cmu.edu. <http://homenet.andrew.cmu.edu/progress/research.html> Glad to see us all that happy, Reinhold Grether <http://www.netzwissenschaft.com/>

[Fwd: [CIRASI-LISTE:3428] un livre sur l'histoire du multimedia]

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [CIRASI-LISTE:3428] un livre sur l'histoire du multimedia Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 20:27:59 -0400 From: Pierre Levy <Pierre_Levy(a)uqtr.uquebec.ca> Reply-To: cirasi-liste(a)uqam.ca To: Forum de discussion - collectif CIRASI <cirasi-liste(a)uqam.ca> MULTIMEDIA: FROM WAGNER TO VIRTUAL REALITY edited by Randall Packer and Ken Jordan foreword by William Gibson published by W.W. Norton, 400 pp., $27.95 publication date: July 23, 2001 "This book is one start toward a different sort of history.... I recommend this book to you with an earnestness that I have seldom felt for any collection of historic texts. This is, in large part, where the bodies are buried. Assembled in this way, in such close proximity, these visions give off strange sparks." - from the foreword by William Gibson MULTIMEDIA: FROM WAGNER TO VIRTUAL REALITY presents an untold history behind the interfaces, links, and interactivity we all take for granted today. This work traces a fertile and fascinating series of collaborations between the arts and the sciences, going back to the years just after World War II -- and even further, to composer Richard Wagner, whose ideas about the immersive nature of music theater foreshadowed the experience of virtual reality. Among the essential articles gathered in the book are the Futurists' 1916 manifesto on cinema, which declared that the new medium would unite all media and replace the book; Vannevar Bush's 1945 Atlantic Monthly essay that leads directly to the hyperlinks in today's multimedia; J.C.R. Licklider's groundbreaking idea in 1960 that people and computers could collaborate in creative work; Nam June Paik's 1984 essay proposing that satellite technology would encourage a global information art; Tim Berners-Lee's 1989 proposal for a document-sharing network, which became the basis of the World Wide Web; and William Gibson's discussion of how he came up with the word "cyberspace." With an insightful introduction to the volume and critical commentaries on each article, editors Randall Packer and Ken Jordan lead us through the groundbreaking developments of the multimedia story. The book publication completes a unique hybrid publication project that joins W.W. Norton with Intel Corporation's ArtMuseum.net. The book and the Website, which was launched in June, 2000, are meant to work in tandem. On-line, MULTIMEDIA: FROM WAGNER TO VIRTUAL REALITY is a dynamic, growing resource featuring hyperlinked texts and a wealth of multimedia documentation. Please visit the site at http://www.artmuseum.net. From the early reviews: "The best guide yet on a subject of central importance to anyone interested in the future of media, and the growing marriage between art and science....The collection is historically significant, given that nobody has ever woven together the different threads, thoughts and impulses that become multimedia, a new form both of media and culture.... The book flows skillfully from one idea to the next, each section building on the one that preceded it." - Jon Katz, Slashdot "In the Norton Anthology tradition, Packer and Jordan bring together seminal contributions that artists and scientists have made to the field of computer-human interaction... An evocative whirlwind tour through 100 years of work... Excellent..." - S. Joy Mountford, Wired "[MULTIMEDIA is] a key source book in the field of art, science and technology. This book is excellent in all respects." - Annick Bureaud, Leonardo Digital Reviews "Readers interested in the history of multimedia should be enthralled by this collection of hard-to-find essays.... A remarkable blending of past and present, these essays remind us that today's wondrous inventions didn't just spring into existence out of nothingness." - Booklist MULTIMEDIA: FROM WAGNER TO VIRTUAL REALITY Table of Contents Foreword by William Gibson Overture by Randall Packer and Ken Jordan I. Regarding international comparative data: While the data are changing, and some good online resources have already been recommended, let me also suggest: Carleen F. Maitland and Johannes M. Bauer, "National Level Culture and Global diffusion: the Case of the Internet," in Charles Ess (Ed.), _Culture, Technology, Communication: Towards an Intercultural Global Village_, pp. 87-120. Albany, NY: SUNY Press, 2001. Building on previous efforts, Maitland and Bauer develop a framework for quantitative approaches to technology diffusion that will be of value in its own right as well as it includes numerous sources for the sorts of data you're looking for, including data for the OECD. In addition (quoting from my introduction): Previous research has tended to focus on matters of economy and infrastructure, with relatively little work in the area of culture - in part, because earlier work has shown that economic factors are the stronger predictors of technology adoption. In order to test these findings and their own enhancements of earlier diffusion theory, Maitland and Bauer build especially on the work of Hofstede and Herbig to include three cultural factors in their study: uncertainty avoidance, gender equality, and English language ability. Their extensive statistical study draws on a considerable range of data sources, as available for 185 countries during the time period between 1991 and 1997. In examining Internet growth between countries, they find that cultural variables are less significant in explaining adoption than economic or infrastructure variables: of these, teledensity, International Call Cost, and School Enrollment emerge as the strongest predictors - the last finding supporting the importance of education in development. For that, the cultural factor of English language ability also plays a significant role. In analyzing growth within countries, their data likewise uncovers a comparatively stronger role for economic factors - in this case, the number of PC¹s per capita. But cultural factors - namely, uncertainty avoidance and gender empowerment - also play a significant role. Beyond Maitland and Bauer, you may want to look at some of the reports on specific cultural domains - Germany/Austria/Switzerland (Hrachovec), Switzerland (Rey), Kuwait (Wheeler), Korea (Yoon, Fouser), India (Kenniston), and Thailand (Hongladarom) as these include sources for country-specific data.
