This is simply to confirm what both Matthew and Radhika just wrote. As a long-time lurker on this list, a fairly new official member to AoIR and a first-time attendee to the conference, I should add that it was an altogether great experience over the last few days. The papers were interesting, the dancing was fun and most of all the people were curious, open-minded and interested in often similar issues. They were also, despite all sentimental talk about the conferences 1.0 and 2.0 (history in the making ;-), VERY open to any newbie like me. More importantly maybe, they made clear that all of us out there can still get involved in the real workings of the association and/or the organisation of the next conference if we so want. Now THAT's a promise!!! The only disadvantage: getting back to work is hard. De Unit internet cafe on leliestraat

Dear AIR: fastest internet connection so far in Maastricht is De Unit Cafe middle of street Leliestraat between Vrijthof Square and River but very close to Vrijthof Square. While I was here a (North) American gent refused to pay for his time, thinking he was being overcharged. He caused a big scene, slapped down what he thought he owed, and ran out before the owner could get to the store. The owner quickly went to the computer, confirmed the time online, and dug out the gent's email address. The owner is thinking of having a camera installed in the store so customers can be watched, and promised me the guy would be 'spammed' to oblivion. So lesson is clear files from browsers and force a cold boot from public/commercial terminals when you are finished using. Those of us who attended the surveillance panels can draw out other lessons. Those of us interested in interculutral communication would have loved the interaction. For everyone else, avoid arguments with the Dutch. I doubt the camera will be installed before AIR moves on. p.

eLearn Accredit OnLine Conference November 2002

Dear Colleague This message is just to give you a brief update on preparations for the eLearn Accredit OnLine Conference November 2002. As you probably know, eLearn Accredit is hosting a worldwide conference during the month of November, exploring whether a worldwide quality marque for online learning will be possible, and what the next steps might be in realising it. The discussion will be taking place in specialised discussion strands, phased over 4 weeks. Each strand will be following the same general rhythm, first pooling ideas and papers based on where we are now, then exploring where we might like to get to, and then how we might get there. The final week will put together some ideas on the next steps. The conference will be guided by some excellent moderators, and each week they will produce summary papers of the discussions which have taken place in each strand, to be shared across all the registered participants. One of the most important short term benefits of participation in the eLearn Accredit discussions will be the opportunity to learn from best practice not only in your own sector, but across all sectors worldwide. Participation in the conference will be free, so we hope that there will be no reason why anyone interested in the area of quality standards for online learning will not want to join in the discussions, and to contribute their own ideas. The online format allows us to open the discussions to all sorts of people and organisations who might not be able to travel to a physical conference, and we will ensure that all the best ideas are reported back to everyone. We are also ensuring that presenters and moderators will pick up any comments posted after scheduled presentation times, so that no one will be excluded by time zone or by technical barriers from making their point. Please see the attachment for a brief overview of the format of the discussions, and of the different discussion strands. To get involved, just register free at www.elearnaccredit.org. Conference Postcard #1

Another update from Maastricht... Day 1 of AoIR 3.0 was very successful. There are more delegates attending than ever before - certainly a good reason to hold it in Europe - and a very full program, but the character of the conference seems to have remained the same. Steve Jones, President of AoIR, said that "It feels more like a reunion than an academic conference, it has an intimacy and an ease of interaction and exchange that I find sorely lacking at the other conferences I have gone to in my career." By all accounts, the program is outstanding, being very well-received by both new and returning conference delegates. The papers will be made available after the conference and they will show to all AoIR members the fantastic job done by the Program Committee, chaired by Klaus Jensen. Moreover, the work of the people at the Infonomics Institute, particularly Monica Murero's effort, have made this, in Steve's words, " an intellectually and socially memorable event". I for one am looking forward to the dinner tonight, for more socially memorable moments :). Perhaps the highlight, though, for me so far was a session one online communities of learning and practice. Not only were the papers well presented and informative, but the juxtaposition of these papers into a panel worked very well. What was especially interesting was that these papers, while concerned with online learning, did not simply discuss them in terms of learning...rather they remained within the more general sphere of Internet research, treating the net as both object and resource for scholarship. I would say more but the conference calls - -- there are lots of choices in the program, ensuring that delegates are not short of options for learning about and discussing the most recent developments in net research is all for now! The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in Communication or a related field, strong promise of scholarly accomplishments and teaching success (at the undergraduate and graduate level) appropriate for appointment as Assistant Professor, promise of external research funding, and demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary scholarship. A candidate must also have some combination of interests in the study of health communication, intercultural communication, and new media, the Internet, and/or communication technology. Located in the heart of Chicago, UIC is a Research I University with 16,000 undergraduates, 6,500 graduate and 3,000 professional students. The Department of Communication has 10 full-time faculty, approximately 200 undergraduate majors, and 20 M.A. students. The Department is developing a doctoral program focused on the relationship between technology, intercultural communication, and media studies. The desired appointment date for the position is August 21, 2003. Conference Correspondent: postcard #0

Dear air members At today, Monday 9.00 am Maastricht time, AoIR V3 Net / Work / Theory kicks off. I have undertaken to write short reports for those of us on Air-l who are not at the conference giving some idea of how the proceedings are going. These bulletins will be in large measure based on the observations of all executive members as we participate in the conference. I trust that you will find them of interest and value. This report-zero, then, is brief. I sit here, in one of the conference hotels, stomach growling from hunger (I had to get my digital fix before my food!) as I connect myself - answering emails, searching for more information from Australian sources about the terrible bombing in Indonesia, networking across alternate times and spaces. This is the pre-conference ritual, perhaps. Anticipation, some nervousness (who hasn't felt that little tremor of 'who will I know'? 'will I meet interesting people?'), and here, for me, a sense of excitement at the great program of kenote speakers and parallel sessions, and the word that the conference has grown larger yet again, with more registrations than AoIR v2. I am also thrilled and delighted at the wonderful organisation of the conference by all those concerned, but especially Monica (Conference Chair) and Klaus (Program Chair). I am 'wishing you were here' as is traditional in postcards (and some of you are, of course). Off for breakfast, before the lack of coffee becomes unbearable!
