Not quite... www.toronto.edu maps to www.utoronto.ca. My email address is jason.nolan(a)utoronto.ca which, depending on the gods, is also jason.nolan(a)toronto.edu. .edu is no different than .com .net or .org. They're all somewhat diasporic domains, I guess. Anyone can have them. .mil on the other hand... Another point worth mentioning is that just because someone does not use an amerocentric domain name doesn't mean that they're not american. My friend, an American living in France (http://sarahsmiles.tk/) just registered a domain in Tokelau (http://my.dot.tk/index.html) And there was a movement to get access to the .eh (Western Sahara I think), by a group of Canadians because of how many of us end our sentences, eh? You can essentialize the Internet suffix too quickly. Domain names have their own problems and stories. For example, for me to register a .com/.net/.org domain costs $23.15 (CND) versus almost $50 to register a .ca domain. And nothing at all to register a .tk domain. Even worse, if I want a top level domain such as my achieve.utoronto.ca, I now have to have political clout within the institution. And then there's been this marketing of county's domains, such as .tv .to and .tk as commodities. This is very cool, and worthy of study, especially if someone includes the stories of the whos and hows by which these names were given out in the first place. Apologies for cross-posting The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Postdoctoral Research Associate Starting Immediately The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Candidates should possess a strong interest in broadening career development for PhD students. This is a full-time position for an 18-month grant, located at the Foundation's headquarters in Princeton. The position will contribute greatly to the Foundation's efforts to promote innovations in doctoral education, and it reports to a Program Officer in the Office of Program Development. The candidate will be responsible for developing a methodology to assess innovative approaches to training doctoral students in the arts and sciences for careers outside of academe as well as in teaching and research. As the primary lead for this effort, the candidate will interact with the leadership, graduate faculty and doctoral students at major research universities, as well as with leaders in non-academic sectors of the economy. Folks, I'm putting together a roundtable for AIR 3.0 (aoir.org/2002) which as most of you know will be in Maastricht on October 13-16, 2002 and whose deadline for submission as most of you may wish to forget is, eeks, February 15. I have assembled a number of participants who will discuss RESEARCH GAPS in the field of Internet studies. We are interested in discussing not necessarily what has been done, but rather what hasn't been done, what needs to be done, and what directions can and should be taken by today's and tomorrow's Internet scholars. I am looking for a few more participants to fill out our roundtable. In particular, I am interested in someone who can speak to research gaps in: a) scholarship from outside the USA and English-speaking countries; b) issues of cultural diversity, including race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, and class; and c) questions regarding 'next generation' Internet (cellular phone-based messaging, massively multiplayer games, etc). We are looking for folks who feel comfortable talking about The Big Picture, folks who have a rich grasp upon (and opinions about) where we've been as an emerging field and where we should be going.
