Cfp: Future TV: adaptive instruction in your livingroom

FUTURE TV: adaptive instruction in your living room http://www.it.bton.ac.uk/staff/jfm5/FutureTV June 3-4 2002 Donostia / San Sebastian, Spain A workshop held in conjunction with ITS 2002 Television is central to the entertainment, information, leisure, and social life of millions of homes all over the world. It has been used for educational purposes for decades, both in the form of edutainment programs (like Sesame street), school TV, and higher education distance learning (like programs by the Open University on UK television). However, it has not really been used for Intelligent Tutoring Systems, as broadcasting to millions of people did not allow for adaptivity. The advent of digital television, and in particular its potential for interactivity (via software and hardware build into receivers and connection with other telecommunication systems, like telephone, cable, and satellite) provides the opportunity to change this. It opens up the possibility of personalised, adaptive learning experiences for individuals and groups of learners alike and has resulted in a heightened interest in the potential of television for education. In many ways, ITS for interactive television will need to be different from computer-based ITS: 1. Convergence is needed between different production and design traditions 2. ITS for interactive television will need to overcome inherent viewer passivity 3. ITS for interactive television needs to tailor for the social activity of watching television This workshop will provide a forum in which researchers from the ITS community 1. can explore how their existing expertise (in mainly computer-based instruction) can be applied in the area of ITS for Interactive Television, and 2. can identify a research agenda for the work that would need to be done. It will complement a workshop that has taken place at the User Modelling conference in 2001 (http://www.di.unito.it/~liliana/UM01/TV.html) and a workshop that will take place at Adaptive Hypermedia 2002 (http://www.di.unito.it/~liliana/TV02/index.html ). Both of these workshops were aimed at the broader area of intelligent user interfaces for interactive television. Submissions: Many participants in this workshop may not have worked in the area of interactive television before, or may only have work in progress. We welcome both papers on work in progress (6 pages max) and position papers (2 pages max). Position papers should address how the participant's experience in another domain (probably the ITS domain, but may be different) might be applicable to this area. Topics to be addressed include, but are not limited to: * What type of interactive service will help people to learn? What kind of learning experience should be offered? * In what ways can groups of learners be modelled? * How can adaptation take place to groups of learners? * In what way can educational television programs be made that are tailored to the individuals in a group, but where the whole group sits in front of the same television? * How can learner communities be formed? * How can coherence and narrative flow be maintained when producing tailored sequences of video? * How can other technologies, like mobile phones, be combined with television to provide good learning experiences? * How can viewer passivity be overcome in the context of educational television programs? * How can a synergy between ITS and TV design ideas be reached? Each submission must include (1) a few keywords giving a clear indication of topic and subtopic; (2) author names with affiliations, addresses, and phone numbers; (3) email address of the principal author. Important dates: March 31: Submission of proposed papers April 15: Paper acceptance notification April 22: Final version of accepted submissions Papers should be prepared as Word or PDF files (or if that cannot be done, PostScript), using Times 11pt fonts. The size of submission is limited to 6 pages for work in progress, and 2 pages for position papers. Please send your submissions to: Judith.Masthoff(a)brighton.ac.uk. Accepted papers will be made available on a Web site before the ITS'02 conference, so that people can read them in advance. They will also be published in the proceedings of the workshop. RE: [Air-l] Policy and laws on e-health in European countries -2

Hi Antonio, Thank you for your message, and thanks also to all the other folks who wrote to me. For example, Martin told me that in Germany physicians are not allowed to do long distance diagnosis based on the patients' description of the symptoms (via e-mail, for example). In other countries (remote areas of Australia, Canada, or Alaska) long distance medical practice is a necessity and a reality, for example in cardiac patients monitoring. How about Europe? Antonio, do you know what policy or legislation is on in your country, (Spain) in the health vs IT field (Internet, telemedicine, etc.)? Folks, does your (European) country regulate the area of health and IT? Non-European Folks: I 'll get back to you for comparative studies on policy! Thank you! Monica Murero P.S.: By the way, the conference organization is proceeding very well in Maastricht! call for papers

<fontfamily><param>Times_New_Roman</param><bigger><bigger>Call for papers to <bigger>Making Common Ground: Methodological and Ethical issues in doing Internet research </bigger>Nordic interdisciplinary conference and workshop at NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Trondheim, Norway, 1. - 2. of June 2002 After a good decade of humanistic and social scientific research on Internet-mediated contexts, the first phase of 'trying and failing' has established valuable knowledge not only in relation to the medium and its users, but parallell to this, on'doing internet research: methodological issues related to the research processes themselves. We are just now developing and negotiating an understanding of 'best practises', based on the experiences from the growing number of studies carried out. An important issue related to these processes is research ethical perspectives of diverse approaches to studying the Internet and its social activities: are our existing ethical guidelines adaptable to researching the new mediated 'semi-public' contexts - or are more specified and new ehtical guidelines required? The aim of the conference is to gather primarily nordic researchers and students from the humanistic and social scientific disciplines working with internet-generated material, in order to enlighten and discuss the many methodological and ethical challenges raised by researching the Internet, as well as creating networks. Additionally, the conference will be followed up by a research course 3. - 6. of June, on the same topics, arranged by Program for applied ethics at NTNU (more detailed information on both events will follow shortly). When is it necessary to obtain consent for researching net-mediated group interaction, and how can it be done? How can net-mediated spheres be defined, are they public or private, and what methodological and ethical consequences do a certain definiton imply? Several of the speakers are members of the ethical board of the international and interdisciplinary organisation Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR.) The empirical experience posessed by researchers in this field is crucial to discussing its principle sides, and because this will be a unique opportunity to meet and learn from other collegues, a big part of the conference is organized as topic divided work-shops. The work-shops will, out from the submitted abstracts of presentations, focus on discussion rather than the more traditonal forms of paper-presentation. Participants are asked to specify the work-shop they would like to participate in, and if and what they would like to present about. Short summaries will be distributed to the other participants in the group. The group discussions will be lead by an experienced researcher in the field that additionally will prepare comments to each presentation. Dependent on the respons, work-shop topics may be altered. Please specify the work-shop you would like participate in, as well as attaching an abstract on approximately 350 words describing the main issue you would like to present upon and contact information (e-mail, phone, post adress). The Pope is Onside.
by Lachlan Brown 28 Feb '02

28 Feb '02

Airs, good to read the two cases in the Ethics committee section. Goldsmiths wavered a bit, but The Pope seems interested, I'll be in touch. Lachlan http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/pccs/documents/rc_pc_… I INTRODUCTION 1. Today's revolution in social communications involves a fundamental reshaping of the elements by which people comprehend the world about them, and verify and express what they comprehend. The constant availability of images and ideas, and their rapid transmission even from continent to continent, have profound consequences, both positive and negative, for the psychological, moral and social development of persons, the structure and functioning of societies, intercultural communications, and the perception and transmission of values, world views, ideologies, and religious beliefs.1 The truth of these words has become clearer than ever during the past decade. Today it takes no great stretch of the imagination to envisage the earth as an interconnected globe humming with electronic transmissionsa chattering planet nestled in the provident silence of space. The ethical question is whether this is contributing to authentic human development and helping individuals and peoples to be true to their transcendent destiny. And, of course, in many ways the answer is yes. The new media are powerful tools for education and cultural enrichment, for commercial activity and political participation, for intercultural dialogue and understanding; and, as we point out in the document that accompanies this one,2 they also can serve the cause of religion. Yet this coin has another side. Media of communication that can be used for the good of persons and communities can be used to exploit, manipulate, dominate, and corrupt. 2. The Internet is the latest and in many respects most powerful in a line of mediatelegraph, telephone, radio, televisionthat for many people have progressively eliminated time and space as obstacles to communication during the last century and a half. It has enormous consequences for individuals, nations, and the world. In this document we wish to set out a Catholic view of the Internet, as a starting point for the Church's participation in dialogue with other sectors of society, especially other religious groups, concerning the development and use of this marvelous technological instrument. The Internet is being put to many good uses now, with the promise of many more, but much harm also can be done by its improper use. Which it will be, good or harm, is largely a matter of choicea choice to whose making the Church brings two elements of great importance: her commitment to the dignity of the human person and her long tradition of moral wisdom.3 3. As with other media, the person and the community of persons are central to ethical evaluation of the Internet. In regard to the message communicated, the process of communicating, and structural and systemic issues in communication, the fundamental ethical principle is this: The human person and the human community are the end and measure of the use of the media of social communication; communication should be by persons to persons for the integral development of persons.4 The common goodthe sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily5provides a second basic principle for ethical evaluation of social communications. It should be understood inclusively, as the whole of those worthy purposes to which a community's members commit themselves together and which the community exists to realize and sustain. The good of individuals depends upon the common good of their communities. The virtue disposing people to protect and promote the common good is solidarity. It is not a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at other people's troubles, but a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.6 Especially today solidarity has a clear, strong international dimension; it is correct to speak of, and obligatory to work for, the international common good. 4. The international common good, the virtue of solidarity, the revolution in communications media and information technology, and the Internet are all relevant to the process of globalization. To a great extent, the new technology drives and supports globalization, creating a situation in which commerce and communications are no longer bound by borders.7 This has immensely important consequences. Globalization can increase wealth and foster development; it offers advantages like efficiency and increased production... greater unity among peoples... a better service to the human family.8 But the benefits have not been evenly shared up to now. Some individuals, commercial enterprises, and countries have grown enormously wealthy while others have fallen behind. Whole nations have been excluded almost entirely from the process, denied a place in the new world taking shape. Globalization, which has profoundly transformed economic systems by creating unexpected possibilities of growth, has also resulted in many people being relegated to the side of the road: unemployment in the more developed countries and extreme poverty in too many countries of the Southern Hemisphere continue to hold millions of women and men back from progress and prosperity.9 It is by no means clear that even societies that have entered into the globalization process have done so entirely as a matter of free, informed choice. Instead, many people, especially the disadvantaged, experience this as something that has been forced upon them rather than as a process in which they can actively participate.10 In many parts of the world, globalization is spurring rapid, sweeping social change. This is not just an economic process but a cultural one, with both positive and negative aspects. Those who are subjected to it often see globalization as a destructive flood threatening the social norms which had protected them and the cultural points of reference which had given them direction in life....Changes in technology and work relationships are moving too quickly for cultures to respond.11 5. One major consequence of the deregulation of recent years has been a shift of power from national states to transnational corporations. It is important that these corporations be encouraged and helped to use their power for the good of humanity; and this points to a need for more communication and dialogue between them and concerned bodies like the Church. Use of the new information technology and the Internet needs to be informed and guided by a resolute commitment to the practice of solidarity in the service of the common good, within and among nations. This technology can be a means for solving human problems, promoting the integral development of persons, creating a world governed by justice and peace and love. Now, even more than when the Pastoral Instruction on the Means of Social Communications Communio et Progressio made the point more than thirty years ago, media have the ability to make every person everywhere a partner in the business of the human race.12 This is an astonishing vision. The Internet can help make it realfor individuals, groups, nations, and the human raceonly if it is used in light of clear, sound ethical principles, especially the virtue of solidarity. To do so will be to everyone's advantage, for we know one thing today more than in the past: we will never be happy and at peace without one another, much less if some are against others.13 This will be an expression of that spirituality of communion which implies the ability to see what is positive in others, to welcome it and prize it as a gift from God, along with the ability to make room' for our brothers and sisters, bearing each other's burdens' (Gal. 6, 2) and resisting the selfish temptations which constantly beset us.14 6. The spread of the Internet also raises a number of other ethical questions about matters like privacy, the security and confidentiality of data, copyright and intellectual property law, pornography, hate sites, the dissemination of rumor and character assassination under the guise of news, and much else. We shall speak briefly about some of these things below, while recognizing that they call for continued analysis and discussion by all concerned parties. Fundamentally, though, we do not view the Internet only as a source of problems; we see it as a source of benefits to the human race. But the benefits can be fully realized only if the problems are solved. -- _______________________________________________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
