Hi all, My apologies for posting this enquiry to the mailing list, but it seemed an ideal place to ask whether anyone knew of any PhD Scholarships being offered currently?. (I attended and presented at the first AOIR conference in Kansas but have not been very active in the group of late. I'm asking about scholarships as I was recently shortlisted for a scholarship (to finish my PhD) in the UK, but the university was unable to find a suitable co-supervisor which meant that they could not offer me a place. I have my PhD proposal online at: http://www.hotkey.net.au/~carolineb This will give an idea as to the topic and why supervision is an 'issue'. The research is 'twofold' in that it concerns the feasibility of CMC as a faciliator of male self-disclosure, so supervision requirements dictate that I have one person qualified in the 'online' aspect and another in the area of 'gender studies'. Does anyone have any ideas or avenues that I could explore regarding scholarships? Thank you in advance, Caroline Bennett

Mazzarella, Ithaca College Norma Pecora, Ohio University Popular Communication, a new journal from Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, will publish articles on popular communication texts, artifacts, audiences, events, and practices. Commencing publication in 2003, this peer-reviewed journal will consider all aspects of popular culture that is mediated by or related to mass media. We welcome essays on such topics as: the Internet _ youth culture _ representation _ fandom film _ sports _ spectacles _ sexuality advertising _ consumer culture _ the digital revolution television _ radio _ music _ magazines zines _ dance _ comic books _ computer games The journal welcomes diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives. Popular Communication is intended for scholars, researchers, and educators in mass communication, advertising, media studies, visual communication, and cultural studies. It will also appeal to readers in family studies, gender studies, race/ethnic studies, sociology, social psychology, women's studies, American studies, and other disciplines with an emphasis on or interest in popular communication. The paper submission deadline for Volume 1, Issue 2, is June 1, 2002. Articles will be reviewed on an ongoing basis for publication in subsequent issues of the journal. The title page should include the title of the manuscript; names and affiliations of all authors; name address, phone and fax numbers, email address of the corresponding author; and a running head of not more than 48 letters and spaces. Only the title page should contain identifying information. The second page should include the manuscript title, an abstract of 100 to 150 words, and a list of key words for use in indexing. All figures must be camera ready.

Honorable Professor, I have been appointed to serve as the General Chair of the Summer 2002 edition of the SSGRR series of international conferences, and I would like to extend a special invitation to you. The SSGRR-2002S (Summer) conference on "Infrastructure for e-Business, e-Education, e-Science, and e-Medicine" takes place in SSGRR (Scuola Superiore G. Reiss Romoli), the delux congress and educational center of the Telecom Italia Group of companies. This is in L'Aquila near Rome, Italy, from July 29 (Monday) at 5pm (start of the Grand Opening) till August 4 (Sunday) at 10am (departure of busses to the Rome airport Fiumicino and the railway station Tiburtina). Most of the past participants beleive that this was one of the most interesting, most useful, and definitely THE most hospitable conference they ever attended. The SSGRR-2002S will be open by Jerome Friedman from MIT (laureate of the NOBEL PRIZE) and Travor Gruen-Kennedy of Citrix (listed by some sources, together with Bill Gates, as one of the world's TOP-25 contributors to the development of the Internet). The following is an article about how ESL (English as a Second Language) students--most participants were Asian--in some U.S. colleges have interacted with American tutors on the Internet in comparison to their offline interactions: Freiermuth, M.R. (2001). Native speakers or non-native speakers: Who has the floor? Online and face-to-face interaction in culturally mixed small groups. Computer Assisted Language Learning, 14, 169-199. And as far as Charles Ess' "Culture, Technology, Communication" is concerned, it seems to be more about computer-mediated communication at specific cultures only (non-western) than intercultural communication. For instance, one chapter that is listed under the category of "East-West/East" is about the recent arrival of computer-mediated communication and its social impacts on young Korean generation, rather than about how those from Korean culture inter-communicated with those from another culture over the Internet. The actual portion of intercultural computer-mediated communication in the book isn't much as it sounds from the title: "Towards an Intercultural Global Village." However, I think the book is still valuable because it still provides perspectives that are "less western" or "the other side of the story." Personally, I would be interested in hearing more about your research--if that is the intention of finding sources for intercultural communication mediated over the Internet.
