Greg Wise, et al: Some sources I know (really well) of non-US Internet use (there is a huge amount, so Greg, please list scope conditions): 1. Wellman-Haythornthwaite, _The Internet in Everyday Life_ (Blackwells 2002) has a bunch of chapters (Germany, Canada, Japan, India, UK). Plus a comparative data chapter ("The Global Villagers'). 2. The Universitat Oberta Catalunya website has a book-length report about the Internet in Catalonia. Manuel Castells is the first author. I (with Isabel Diaz de Isla) have a chapter doing my Users and Uses thing. Originally, only in Spanish, but Catalan and English translations may have been posted. The Internet and September 11

I've been finding information on Internet use and September 11th in the United States (e.g., the Pew Internet & American Life reports), but am now looking for work on non-US internet use. Any suggestions? Also, are there reports out there that cover pager, text-pager (e.g., Blackberry), and cell phone use in NY during that crisis? For example, people being able to contact loved ones via text-pagers when the phone lines were busy, etc. Or even email use in that context? And since I'm asking a lot, I might as well ask if there are studies of Non-US broadcast coverage of September 11th (was it carried live? By who? For how long? Etc.) Again, most of the things I've been able to find are solely for the US context. I'm probably just looking in the wrong places. Off-list replies are fine (gregwise(a)asu.edu) Cheers, greg

Lev Manovich does some theorizing along these lines (the Internet as database) in his book the Language of New Media. You would probably find in there a pretty cogent case for this argument. I think that it is something of a false dichotomy to think of it as either cmc or database, as people make vastly different uses of it. For my research, it is primarily a database. For my communication, it is cmc. A. I then dragged it into a copy of 'macromedia flash player 6' which comes with Macromedia Flash MX (but which might be available through www.macromedia.com- not a 'plugin' but an actual viewer). And then I had to remember to press 'play' and voila- it played. I might node that Flash MX editor wouldn't open the file, noting that it was locked. But for research and aesthetic consideration, the integral file was simply waiting there, ready to be databased, watched, and integrated into some other presentation. recording .swf and .mov

I am trying to get some movies (.swf and .mov) from Nokia.com for my dissertation research....but getting the direct URLs to the files and trying to "save as" is not working. Somehow I was able to save one .swf but it won't run of my drive, I think becuase it is trying to access some other files. I have been able to get around the same problem with RealMedia files designed not be be copied by using some hacker software designed specifically to work with RealServer. Does anything similar exist for Shockwave or Quicktime? Does one of the delux versions of Quicktime allow you to "save as" once you have a URL for a .mov? I have tried some of the motion capture software, but the frame rates are not fast enough and this does not capture the all important audio. presence, telepresence research

hi all, delurking to ask a research question. I'm interested in sources which discuss presence/telepresence with regard to online text based communication practices (email, in particular). most of the literature concentrates on presence in teleconferencing, VR, webcams etc (eg The Robot in the Garden, 2000) or, if it does look at electronic textual mediation it's often from the 'social presence' theoretical perspective which, while it needs to be noted, is not the speculative path i want to pursue. i'm also familiar with William Mitchell's formulation of the "economy of presence" - and would welcome discussions on this. Presence is, of course, implicit in many of the discussions about subjectivity, supposed immediacy & transparency of the medium, but i wonder if anyone knows of any specific, cultural studies (whatever that is) or philosophy of technological approaches? Specifically, perhaps any that work within a Derridean framework? thanks in advance - replies off list if that's better protocol and i'll post back any useful details. Esther. Louise, I just came across a special issue of Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems that provides a good orientation to Activity Theory perspectives on the question you pose below: Bertelsen, O. W., & Bødker, S. (2000). Introduction: Information technology in human activity. Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems, 12, 3-14. They reference all the usual suspects: Nardi (1996); Engeström (many cites); Kuutti (esp. in Nardi). The intro also mentions cites that link AT perspectives with empirical research in a range of locales, including those that combine symbolic interactionism & actor-network frameworks. While lectures and discussions will serve to articulate the contemporary debates around the e-museum, emphasis will be given to building a content-driven project during this short, yet creative week. Participants will go on to develop projects fully over a further period of 2 months when web sites will be handed in on April 21 and assessed. This is a pilot course, which will be recognized as part of requirements for a future MA in Critical E-Museology. Participants in the pilot course will receive a Postgraduate certificate in Critical E-Museology from Goldsmiths, the University of London. Syllabus: This new course aimed at museum and gallery professionals and professionals in the culture sector challenges the boundary between the concrete museum, the material referent and the electronic surrogate. This short course will interrogate how museums make their screen debuts, and the various ways the digitally born object, the online archive, and the electronic surrogate have been authored by museums in the UK and internationally, as well as the impact of electronic architectures on the institution of the museum. Critical E-Museology combines both the theoretical and practical components of the e-museum and provides both a unique opportunity to examine contemporary debates as well as hands-on production that serve to articulate theory in the studio. This course emphasizes the correlation between cultural theory and contemporary practice and participants will have an opportunity to develop in-house project in a professional computer cluster with state of the art software. During the intensive week of study, participants will construct an e-museum of their own institution, or one of their own fictitious construction, including site map, implementation of logo and institutional identity, site navigational tools, for a content driven web site.
