However this was negotiated as a non exclusive licence which means authors retain republication rights. This was done to help meet the Australian government's requirements for the proceedings to be recognised as 'real' academic labour. (the major critieria are peer review and publication by a professional publisher.) However since this is subscription only I have also negotiated a special issue of Fine Art Forum (electronic) which will include the same content so that it is in the public domain, again on a non exclusive basis. In my own publishing, most of which is electronic, like Danny Butt I refuse to sign contracts that disallow me from republication, and if it is an elect. journal that is subscription only (eg. Postmodern Culture) then I always ensure i have permission to mirror the content personally with the appropriate acknowledgements. it's not Mike, and ..

I want to reassure Mike Gurstein that he was NOT one of the persons I referred to (and not by name) re the Encyclopedia of Community delinquency. If he had asked me privately, I would have told him. Mike had his own reasons for not contributing, informed us in a quite professional way in timely fashion, and we got a fine replacement. (Also a reader of this list). The two people I had in mind only told us TWO WEEKS before the shipping date that they wouldn't have their articles done -- after repeated inquiries by myself and the project coordinator. You can imagine the bind this unprofessional conduct left us in -- and I repeat my deep gratitude to the two colleagues who lept into the breach. Those two authors know the stress that the defaulters put on them, on me, and on the project. (The two delinquent authors appear to have shrugged it off, with one saying something like "Well, don't most people not deliver sometimes?") As to Mike's point about compensation, that seems to be a general issue. I know of many books that I've contributed to where I don't get compensated except for the sheer joy of getting my ideas out to some part of the reading public. And, in fact, contributors to the Encyclopedia ARE getting compensated in terms spelled out up front. Those with articles of 1500 words or more get a copy of the 4 volumes of the Encyclopedia. Most authors get some modest $$s too. This is more than most people get paid in many book ventures. Indeed, no one else protested. While I have your attention, I would like to say that the 49 articles I edited are all solid, and will offer great starting points to you and to your students doing research. (There are probably another 350 articles in other fields of community; I can't vouch for them, but I do know that the senior editors and project manager were very serious about readable, but scholarly, quality). We all make individual decisions in these matters, and I respect Mike's. I've turned down requests to be in textbooks on similar grounds. I do think the general issues of author compensation go beyond the AoIR list, and that the issues are inappropriate to debate here. I do agree with Mike that the web is a wonderful way to get your messages out. Cultivating intersections among scholars, advocates, and activists in ICT policy

Policy and technology decisions underway right now will determine media's evolution for generations. Meanwhile, social-justice values, civil rights efforts and dissenting voices are being blocked by concentrated and homogenous media. Journalism itself is endangered by commercial and political pressures -- locally, nationally and globally. An emerging force of media advocates and public concern could help advance media policies, practices and systems that reflect the needs and interests of citizens and communities. But despite a recent resurgence in media activism around these issues, the collective impact of that work is far less than the sum of the parts. Too often, advocates, academics, community groups and (inter)national campaigns aren't aware of --or able to build upon-- each other's strengths and research. CIMA was founded to help bridge those information and communication gaps. THE SOLUTION The Center for International Media Action (CIMA), a new not-for-profit organization, has been created with startup support from the Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom Program of the Ford Foundation to provide strategic services and tools to strengthen cooperation among media advocacy, education and reform groups. We will develop and disseminate publications, curricula, workshops and online information-sharing tools to help groups: " identify allies and collaborate effectively " translate key issues for broader audiences " share "best practices" " document media advocacy campaigns, projects, strategies and meetings CIMA seeks to help diversify the participants in media policy debates, prioritize local initiatives and promote points of engagement for media advocacy. Initial program work includes: The Media and Communications Policy Clearinghouse (MCPC): Interactive online tools to track, centralize and cross-reference news, proposals, research, campaign strategies and events in media policy from a public-interest perspective -- developed with participation from stakeholder groups. Organizing FCC and WSIS campaigns: Workshops, presentations and materials about the upcoming UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and current regulatory debates taking place at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in Congress, focused on translating issues for a wider audience and highlighting possibilities for action. CIMA recently produced: "The Reporters' Guide To Media Ownership Rules And The FCC." WHO WE ARE Drawing on extensive interviews with media advocates, sector analyses and strategy conferences, CIMA was founded in February 2003 by media advocacy organizer and educator Aliza Dichter; communications policy researcher, activist and media consultant Seeta Peña Gangadharan; and Catherine Borgman-Arboleda, a nonprofit manager and documentary film producer specializing in international collaboration projects. Encyclopedia of Community

Just to clarify Monica Murero's Encyclopedia posting: It is the Encyclopedia of Communty, to be published by Sage this June. It contains 49 articles about the internet (et al) and community, including a very nice one in which Monica is the lead author. I edited all of them (And a pox on the 2 readers of this list who defaulted on their articles at the very end, putting tremendous stress on me and the 2 wonderful people who jumped in as replacement authors -- they're also readers of this list.) Howevever, the 49 articles are only 1/8 of the entire Encyclopedia. It's in 4 volumes. It also has 650 leads to popular books, movies, etc on community -- Many thanks to the list readers who responded with suggestions. We used most of them. The bad news is that the book is expensive. 500+ USD -- which means that effectively only libraries and Microsoft employees can afford it! I have been trying to get Sage to publish a revised version of our 49 internet/community articles as a separate book, but they haven't agreed now. Perhaps after they do their library sales, we will have better luck. Of course, we are a fast moving field, and I'd face the task of editing 49 articles again, but 45/49 were a joy to work with -- thanks to all of you. Hi apologies for the cross postings that inevitably occur, This is a reminder that registrations for the 2003 Melbourne Digital Arts and Culture (melbourneDAC) conference are closing soon (April 11th). This is the 5th International Digital Arts and Culture conference to be held, and the first to be held outside of North America and Norway. Digital Arts and Culture (DAC) is an international conference series initiated in 1998 by Espen Aarseth, of the University of Bergen. It's intention is to bring together the best new researchers and artists working in the fields of new media, games, and interactive hypermedia to share ideas, problems, and debates. This year's event continues this with an exhibition of digital artworks and four days of conference activities designed to foster debate and dialogue around significant new themes in new media culture and practice.
