Good Day All, My name is Alan Cowles, I am an undergraduate student in the Psychology program at Western Kentucky University. Right now my current future plans are to enroll in a PhD program in either School or Educational Psychology upon graduation in May. The reason I am submitting this inquiry to the list serv, is that I am trying to find a school in which the professors are pursuing the same research interests as myself. Along with my Psychology degree I will be reciving a minor in Computer Information Systems, and my basic research interests are in line with the following: Technology Applications In The Classroom Computer Based Tailored Testing Web-Based Learning Environments Computer Based Statistical Evaluation Of Subjects It was suggested by a professor here at school that I join this list serv, and submit an inquiry that if anyone would be kind enough to point me in the direction of any graduate professors subscribing to the same research interests, that I could be notified. I agree with several earlier comments (e.g. any location will be a problem for some, a balance is probably the best approach). Curiously, no one has mentioned that Canada has similarly restrictive policies to the US when it comes to visas concerning visitors from numerous countries. My most denigrating and logistically nightmarish embassy experience was at the Canadian Embassy in NYC (far surpassed my experiences at three US embassies worldwide). As for Maria's comment about Budapest: "Certainly, adopting Hungarian as the working language is out of the question." How unambitious of you! While I am certainly not a fan of the current U.S. alien identification procedures, some of this discussion is becoming a bit hysterical. Mexican and Canadian travellers are not fingerprinted due to provisions of NAFTA. I assure you that if the Department of Homeland Security could fingerprint Mexican and Canadian travellers without re-negotiating the treaty, it would. (For that matter, if DHS could fingerprint domestic travellers without a popular uprising, it undoubtedly would. It is quietly working toward that end, beginning with a "trusted traveller" program to induce "voluntary" biometric recordation.) I would also be perfectly happy to see the conference held outside the U.S. again. Montreal and Vancouver come to mind. Budapest is nice, too. Dan L. While I am not unsympathetic to the problems that international visitors face going to the USA for conferences, I think that we have to remember that no matter where the location - some people will have problems with attending - for whatever reason. Conferences outside of North America run very expensive for me as a Canadian. While I have been fortunate to have funding to attend, grants do run out. The trip to Sussex was very expensive as a Canadian graduate student. The exchange rate is ridiculous (2.38 CDN = 1 GBP). Other factors include time spent away from our work, as it is no short jaunt to Europe. Most of teach, and it's difficult to get away for conferences when they are a big distance away. I am not sure that I will be able to attend many more conferences outside of N.A. It seems to me that if we alternate between US, Canada and International countries, attendees will also be alternating their attendance. I don't think we can help that. I think it would be a bigger problem if we only held the conference in the US. Yes, we can consider the location of AoIR members, but if we want to expand membership (especially to academics outside of North America), then we need to alternate locations. If we are indeed the Internet gurus and geeks of this generation, than perhaps we can consider alternatives, such as web conferencing/presenting for those people unable to attend for whatever reason. Dear Colleagues, I think we are validating the premise of the digital divide in this discussion about the visa to the US requirement. After all, if any other country on the planet started restricting entry at its borders, we probably would not consider it as an option this time around. I really like to think that the current visa problems are just that: problems that will be resolved in a near future. At the same time, we are riding the Internet wave and it maybe challenging for a fledgling organization such as ours to sustain our conferences unless they are profitable, right? Poor infrastructure in some countries and perhaps political climate in others (Im thinking about visas for the U.S. here) are always going to be variables for us to consider. Not to lose the balance between the two, I think I am ready to vote for Budapest.
