Further to list talk about bogus conferences, I was involved in a little espionage work trying to track down some 'conference' organisers in 2002. A delegate to a pre-WSIS conference I attended, a nice guy from Nepal, told me a story about how his NGO had been approached to attend a conference in Brighton. After visiting the conference website and communicating with the organisers, his NGO stumped up the $400 dollars in registration fees and waited to receive more information. You can guess what happened next. I too visited the website (I worked for Brighton libraries for 4 years) and it was a pretty good job - if you didn't know the town (www.ngosummit2002.4t.com - it's still there, along with a picture of London on the front page!). Perhaps the full story should be related to anyone interested off list, but suffice to say it seemed to be quite an elaborate scam. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to relate it. It seems that there must be a market for this sort of thing out there, in the same way as the 419 situation... What do you mean by "about" the web? Social aspects, technical, history? Perhaps if you can specify further we can help better. ... Meanwhile, let me (of course) suggest "The Internet in Everyday Life" (intro chapter for review) edited by Wellman & Haythornthwaite (2003). I also have a review chapter (co-authored with Chris Hagar) forthcoming in ARIST (Annual Review of Information Science and Technology) titled "The Social World(s) of the Web." I can't circulate widely at this time, but if you have a particular immediate need I could send a copy to you. /Caroline ------- Caroline Haythornthwaite Graduate School of Library and Information Science University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ----- Original Message ----- From: <air-l-request(a)aoir.org> To: <air-l(a)aoir.org> Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2004 11:01 AM Subject: Air-l digest, Vol 1 #1047 - 1 msg > Send Air-l mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://www.aoir.org/mailman/listinfo/air-l > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-admin(a)aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-l digest..." > > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Is anyone aware of an article or book that provides a summary of the current research being done ABOUT the web or Internet? Something published in 2000 or later would be great.

Just for curiosity, I just did a quick search of UMI ProQuest Digital Dissertations for dissertations with a keyword of "Internet" from 2000 to 2004. This produced a list of 3254 citations. Adding the keyword "Web" narrowed it down to 806 citations. Each of these dissertations is likely to have an extensive literature review. A narrower search is likely to be more useful. Internet and Trust - 74 citations Internet and Social Capital - 10 citations It would not be possible to write a literature review that could adequately cover "current research being done ABOUT the web or Internet?"
