The conference brings together researchers concerned with the creation and use of digital information and asks them to focus on these key questions: * How is the emerging digital economy changing writing practices and the nature of knowledge work -- or how will it? * How is writing a form of knowledge work? (Is it?) * What issues, problems, questions face researchers studying the effects of the digital economy on writing practices? Presenters will focus on how writing relates to the knowledge economy and knowledge work, issues of culture and identity, and related public policy challenges. The conference begins on Thursday evening, April 6th, with a keynote presentation by Barbara Mirel, followed by three plenary sessions on Friday, April 7th. Call for Submissions: NUTN 2006 Research Paper Award Deadline: February 3, 2006 The National University Telecommunications Network (NUTN) is seeking nominations for the annual research paper award. The Theme of the 2006 Annual Distance Learning Event is âManaging and Maintaining Quality in Distance Learning.â Research papers nominated for this award should represent an actual research study including the following components: Â· A clearly articulated and testable hypothesis or problem statement; Â· An introduction with a strong theoretical base and review of relevant literature; Â· Clearly explained samples and sampling methods; Â· Follow sound research protocol, whether in keeping with quantitative methods (e.g., experimental or quasi-experimental design) or qualitative methods (e.g., focus groups or text analysis); and Â· Present findings and recommendations in keeping with the research methodology. The results and/or recommendations of the study must demonstrate a contribution to our understanding of the principles, practices, and approaches that lead to improved student learning. The findings of the research should be applicable to the distance learner. A case study of a single entity will not be accepted as an acceptable research method. The recipient of the Research Award will make a presentation of the paper at NUTN 2006 in Minneapolis, MN, June 10-12, 2006, and will receive a complimentary registration to attend the event. 2006 Annual Meeting of the Society for the History of Technology Call for Papers The Society for the History of Technology will hold its annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 12-16, 2006. The Program Committee is seeking proposals for both individual papers and complete panels. Proposals from those new to SHOT are welcome, regardless of discipline. As usual, the Program Committee invites paper and panel proposals on any topic in the history of technology, broadly defined. Of special interest for 2006 are proposals that engage with the following themes: 1. Technology, Games, and Entertainment 2. Technology, Race, and Ethnicity 3. Conversations between History of Technology and other Disciplines For the 2006 meeting the Program Committee is also encouraging unconventional sessions, that is, session formats that vary in useful ways from the typical three/four papers with comment. These might include (but are not limited to) sessions with no formal commentator, workshop-style sessions with papers that are pre-circulated electronically, or "author meets critics" sessions. The Program Committee's highest priority in evaluating paper and panel proposals is scholarly excellence. In evaluating panel proposals the Program Committee is especially interested in sessions that team established and younger scholars, and/or draw participants from multiple institutions and multiple countries. The deadline for proposals is March 15, 2006. Please submit your proposals to light(a)northwestern.edu. See below for proposal guidelines and submission instructions. Guest editors are Michele Chang from Intel and Irina Shklovski from Carnegie Mellon University. In recent years, forces of technology, culture, and society have converged to reshape urban life. The urban experience has quickly emerged as a major focus for research on issues of mobility, location-based services, and pervasive computing. A citys complexities, embodied in its social, historical, and technological infrastructures, make it a viable alternative to the controlled environment of the lab. Yet, as urban experience becomes an increasingly explored avenue for pervasive computing research and application design, there is the risk of approaching the city as a backdrop a site for exploratory activities that presumes a dense population of users without considering the more complex aspects of city life. This special issue will be devoted to bringing members of the human-computer interaction community together with researchers and practitioners from the fields of urban planning, architecture, and design to examine public interfaces and their effects on the urban environment. Public interfaces are systems that foster public dialog, facilitate the exchange of information and services, or encourage interaction between public entities and city inhabitants. Computer encourages submissions reporting systematic empirical studies or critical analyses of interdisciplinary research as well as descriptions of technology design and development. Topics of particular interest include computing as a shared resource, surveillance and personal boundaries in public spaces, access as a means of control and discrimination, and supporting individuals in the production of knowledge. The deadline for submitting papers is **15 February 2006**.
