Call for Chapter Proposals for the Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication Editor: Sigrid Kelsey, MLIS Louisiana State University Introduction: Technology has changed communication drastically in recent years. Podcasts, Email, the World Wide Web, Blackberries, cell phones, text messaging, wireless connections, and other forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) have transformed communication in numerous ways, not only facilitating the speed and sometimes ease of communicating, but redefining and shaping today's communication norms. The Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication will provide comprehensive coverage of the most important current issues, trends, and technologies related to professional computer mediated communication. Coverage: The Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication will feature chapters (5000-7000 words) of a scholarly nature, written by experts offering in-depth descriptions of concepts, issues, and trends in various areas of CMC. The purpose of this handbook is to provide academic articles written in a more non-academic style, in the sense that each article should focus on a specific topic -- rather than a general treatment of CMC -- keeping in mind a readership with a varied background. This will allow scholarly ideas to be accessible to a wide range of readers. This book will explore various forms of CMC chapter by chapter and discuss the broad implications that each medium is having on communication. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to: - Email - Web Sites, web pages - Blackberries - Podcasts, RSS - Chatrooms - Instant messaging - Text messaging - Cell phones - Corporate blogging (may mention implications of personal blogging in the workplace) - Digital divide - File sharing, peer to peer networking - Online forums - Computer mediated collaboration - Wikis - Historical aspects of CMC - Effects of CMC on research participation - Web Design and visual CMC Submission Procedure: Individuals interested in submitting chapters should submit a chapter proposal of one single-spaced page on or before September 30, 2006 to Sigrid Kelsey at sigridkelsey(a)gmail.com (Rich Text Format or Microsoft Word is acceptable). The proposal should include the purpose and content of the proposed chapter and how the proposed chapter relates to the overall objectives of the book. Upon acceptance of their proposals, authors will have until December 1, 2006, to prepare their chapters of 5000-7000 words. Guidelines for preparing chapters will be sent upon acceptance of proposals. This book is tentatively scheduled for publishing by Idea Group Reference (an imprint of Idea Group Inc.), www.idea-group-ref.com, in 2008.

The studentship provides an opportunity to carry out research and industrial training in a three-year programme leading to a PhD. One of the greatest challenges facing governments and society today is improving the health of the population while reducing the costs and burden on health sector resources. Empowering people (and organisations) to take greater ownership of their health, wellbeing and lifestyle is an essential precursor to achieving that goal. Today's emerging telecare technologies are early enablers for such empowerment and, over the coming years, assistive technologies will become commonplace as society grows more conscious of long-term health and lifestyle. Implicit in the growing use of assistive technology is the wide scale deployment of technologies that capture data on relevant human activities and behaviours, ostensibly for the purposes of the health and lifestyle related services. However, that behavioural data contains an information richness that has value in a diversity of sectors in addition to health. The objective of this research program is to explore the potential academic, commercial and policy value of analysis of this data for purposes other than pure healthcare. Attention will be given to issues of confidentiality, security, data protection and ethics as well as potentially experimenting with new analytic and data visualisation techniques. Part of the research will also assess the potential value of such analyses to a range of market sectors and carry out investigative fieldwork with appropriate households using mixed- method approaches. It is anticipated that behavioural data collected in the University's innovative i- Dorm facility (see http://digital-lifestyles.essex.ac.uk/) and through a number of innovative BT trials will also be available for experimental analysis. call for papers Mobile Media an international conference on social and cultural aspects of mobile phones, convergent media, and wireless technologies 2-4 July 2007 The University of Sydney, Australia Barely twenty-five years since their commercial introduction, mobile cellular phones are widely used around the world. Having become an important technology for voice and text communication in the daily lives of billions of people, mobiles are now recognised as central for contemporary transformations in cultural and social practices, and in new developments in computing, media, telecommunications, Internet, and entertainment. Equipment manufacturers, cultural and content producers, and user groups and creative communities are focussing on the possibilities of mobile media - with mobiles and wireless technologies, platforms, services, applications, and cultural forms being designed, manufactured, and reconfigured as convergent media. Various forms of mobile media have been imagined for sometime, and are now a reality: mobile Internet, new forms of mobile text, mobile music, mobile film and video, mobile games, mobile learning, mobile media for the workplace, videotelephony, and mobile television. This relatively short history of mobile telephony is concurrently marked by the shift of the role of users from consumers to active producers - and mobile media is being heralded as a new site for consumption, democratic expression, individualism, citizenship, and creativity. In this international conference, held at the University of Sydney, Australia, 2-4 July 2007, we aim to comprehensively analyse and debate mobile media - exploring its emerging structures, features, practices, value chains, producers and audiences, delving into its social, cultural, aesthetic and commercial implications, and debating its futures. Hello All I think there are too many different arguments mixed all together, in a rather inadequate way. I strongly dislike the OLPC project, mostly for the reasons explained at http://macareo.pucp.edu.pe/evillan/shdf.htm, but I do believe that my arguments, as well as many of the arguments proposed in this discussion, are valid for a specific subset of "developing" countries, and even inside those developing countries, some regions or groups are to be considered under a different perspective. Inequality is wrong, I concur; at the same, unless capitalism is completely replaced by something else, it is an inevitable consequence of an specific economic structure. Programmes like OLPC try to soften or lower inequality, but besides their shortcomings, they cannot even attempt to make inequality disappear. The fact that these computers are "down-market" is not a problem per se. If (a big if) a proper usage is found, they can be adequate, since they are not trying to replace a full-blown PC connected to high bandwidth networks and used for downloading videos from a Torrent. It is. again, a question of purpose, not of specific technology. I'm against the purpose and the specific implementation of such purpose. This is a necessary debate, since it is most possible that governments of developing countries are going to get scammed into buying thousands of these machines without a critical assessment of what exactly to do with them and what exactly should be the outcome of their usage in educational settings.
