Thank you. --Jim Zappen Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Language, Literature and Communication Tenure Track Junior Faculty Position in Communication in Technologically Mediated Contexts The Department of Language, Literature and Communication seeks a strong scholar/researcher in communication in technologically mediated contexts. We will consider candidates who approach this topic grounded in established communication theory and research methods from any area; however, we are especially interested in candidates whose approach is informed by new media studies or by organizational, cross-cultural, or visual communication. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication and external funding. The candidate should show evidence of strong promise in teaching and scholarship. Teaching opportunities will be at the undergraduate and graduate level with the typical teaching load set at two courses per semester. Desirable teaching expertise includes communication theory and research methods, but our flexible program allows faculty to devise and teach courses related to individual scholarly interests. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty conducting state-of-the-art research on communication in technologically mediated contexts in areas such as communication studies, human-computer interaction, digital rhetoric, technical communication, media studies, and graphic design. The department has just added a new M.S. in Human Computer Interaction to a program portfolio that includes one of the top-ranked Ph.D.'s in Communication and Rhetoric in the country and a joint B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication. Internet access in Colombia

Dear all Partnering with a Colombian University I have just finished fielding a survey (July) that looks broadly at communication and political participation in the Colombian context. The raw data will be made available to interested researchers early next year, but for now I thought I would post some descriptor of Internet access and use. This face to face survey used random sampling techniques, and resulted in 1009 completed responses that represent the URBAN population of Colombia (75% of the Colombian population). Have Internet access: 35% Digital divide: Small now in terms of gender (55% males), but very big in terms of income and formal education. Most frequent use: Email (83%) Other uses: News (53%) Commenting news online (22%) Responding to blogs (4%) Online discussion forums (11%) Seeking political info in the past presidential election (17%) If you are interested in the data send me email (to me not to the list) and when it becomes available I will send it to you. The University of San Francisco invites applications from underrepresented ethnic minority scholars for the USF Dissertation Fellowship Program for academic year 2007-2008. Program: Scholars complete the dissertation and initiate an ongoing program of scholarly or creative work, and become familiar with the usual service responsibilities of a university faculty member. Scholars teach one course in the discipline each semester and serve the University in various capacities. Podcasts, Email, the World Wide Web, Blackberries, cell phones, text messaging, wireless connections, and other forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) have transformed communication in numerous ways, not only facilitating the speed and sometimes ease of communicating, but redefining and shaping today's communication norms. The Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication will provide comprehensive coverage of the most important current issues, trends, and technologies related to professional computer mediated communication. Topics and Purpose: The Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication will feature chapters (5000- 7000 words) of a scholarly nature, written by experts offering in-depth descriptions of concepts, issues, and trends in various areas of CMC.
