Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. General review, not specific to Japan Hikikomori - a Japanese mental illness that often leads to suicide attempts and is related to computer use. Tamaki Saito is the Japanese expert on this. Hi all, The papers, panels, roundtables and other presentation proposals are now coming in on a minute-by-minute basis, and things look terrific. This is going to be a FABULOUS conference. To help along those who are still putting the final touches on their submissions, though, (and to avoid jamming the submission system), I am extending the deadline for submissions until THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2007 AT MIDNIGHT EST. A teaching case on Wikipedia

Dear AOIRers, I wanted to let you know that my colleague Andrew McAfee and I have prepared a teaching case on Wikipedia. This case will be taught to MBA students at the Harvard Business School this spring in the Managing in the Information Age elective course. The case is free online and is under the GNU Free Document License. You can get it here http://courseware.hbs.edu/public/cases/wikipedia/ Here is a brief synopsis: Wikipedia has emerged as a robust model for content production by volunteers working asynchronously on the internet with a unconventional model for distributed decision making. The “Articles for Deletion” process in Wikipedia provides unique insight into the inner workings of a distributed community. Wikipedia administrators have to decide if an article on “Enterprise 2.0” should be deleted, kept or merged with some other article. The episode illustrates broader issues of IT-enabled community mobilization and engagement in distributed setting. Teaching objective: To show the delicate balance between issues of authority, expertise, community consensus and norms of behavior in a distributed setting. To discuss success and failure modes in online communities. I hope to have a teaching note for this by April and also a teaching plan - if some of you use it before hand in class - I would be grateful if you would share your experience with me. digital aesthetic 2 Conference/Exhibition/Website Does the digital have the potential to change our perception of art? 16th - 17th March: Conference, University of Central Lancashire 17th March - 3rd June: Exhibition, Harris Museum & Art Gallery and other Preston venues Preston is soon to host a major digital arts event, Digital Aesthetic 2, bringing together some of the most significant artists, theorists, curators and academics working in the field of new media and digital art from around the world. The conference takes place on 16th and 17th March at the University of Central Lancashire whilst the exhibition runs from 17th March to 3rd June at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery and other Preston venues. Parental consent

I'm planning to conduct an online survey of teen volunteers (ages 16-17), and I'm looking for suggestions on ways to secure parental consent. I would be interested to hear from those who have conducted online research with teens. What was your process for securing consent from both parent and teen? My IRB has indicated openness to collecting consent online if a suitable process can be identified. I would love to hear suggestions. Thanks.
