Huntemann and Matthew Thomas Payne The editors seek essays on military/war-themed video games which explore the multifaceted cultural, social, and economic linkages between video games and the military. The collection will feature scholarly work from a diversity of theoretical and methodological perspectives, including: close textual readings of military-themed video games; critical histories of game production processes and marketing practices; and reception studies of video war gamers, fandom, and politically resistant game interventions. As there is no other collection of its kind, Joystick Soldiers will make a significant contribution to the breadth of work shaping the burgeoning field of game studies, complementing analyses concerning the Military-Entertainment Complex, and offering diverse insights on how modern warfare has been represented and remediated in contemporary video games. The editors invite junior as well as established scholars to submit, and welcome cross-disciplinary work from sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, history, military studies, psychology, economics, media studies, visual communication, graphic arts and game design, education, and so forth. We are looking for submissions that address a wide range of topics from diverse methodological approaches, including but not limited to: --Use of games for training, recruitment, propaganda (serious games) --Video games and military ideology (or Military-Entertainment Complex) --Representing / playing soldiers, terrorists, & civilians --Global reception of America's Army and other "pro-US" war games --Production of war video games --War video games across genres (e.g., FPS, RTS, RPG) --Playing war video games of past & near-future conflicts --War game mods and other user-generated content --Machinima as social commentary on war (e.g., Red vs. Blue) --Games and resistance (non-combat games, in-game protests, diplomacy as alternative to force) --Game for peace --Networked war games in different spaces (LAN parties, on-line, mobile). --War games and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) We are interested in defining "military/war" video games widely, but not so widely as to be useless for critical analysis. Searching for e-petition systems

Dear Colleagues, as part of a research project conducted on behalf of the German Federal Parliament, I'm searching for internet-based petition systems for further analysis. These petition systems may be operated by public institutions, NGOs or other organisational forms. The "usual suspects" (such as the e-petition systems in Scotland and Queensland (Australia) or the British Prime Minister's e-petition system) are already on my list. If you happen to be aware of any other examples of web-based petition systems, possibly outside the Anglophone world, please let me know. Any hints are greatly appreciated. AoIR elections commence

Dear all AoIR has now commenced the process of electing a new Executive Committee to take office in October this year to serve until October 2009. We are seeking members' interest in nominating for the new executive and providing notice for everyone of the voting timeline and procedures. Here is an overview of the election timeline, procedures and positions for nomination, as determined strictly by the Association's by-laws. Voting instructions will be provided later and separately. **Please note the different timing for officers and other positions** TIME FRAME OF THE ELECTION: 1. Call for Nominations: July 23, 2007 2. Nominations close for the 4 officer positions: August 6, 2007 Nominations close for the 1 grad student and 3 open seats on the executive: August 22, 2007 3. Ballot sent to members August 23, 2007 4. Voting begins: August 23, 2007 5. Voting ends for 4 officer positions: September 3, 2007 Voting ends for 1 grad student and 3 open seats: September 22, 2007 The new committee is formally announced and assumes its duties at the end of the General Meeting AoIR conference, October 2007. During the period of voting, a forum will be available for discussion with candidates. Candidates' statements will also be made available with the ballot sent to members. A QUICK ORGANIZATIONAL PRIMER: The organizational structure of AoIR is simple. There are 4 officers, 3 open seat representatives, 1 graduate student representative and 2 appointed positions who together with the Immediate Past President make up the 11-member executive committee that runs the show. Elected officials hold their positions for two years. In this election, you are invited to nominate yourself or anyone else whom you think would do a good job, for any position other than the President - the current Vice President assumes the Presidency. Here are brief descriptions of positions 1. President: the "CEO", supervises the organization, performs certain legally required duties. [The Current VP becomes the President] 2. Vice President: "back up" for President, various duties as they arise; *becomes President after 2 years* 3. Secretary: Handles records and membership matters. 4. Treasurer: Handles the money; liaises with secretary over membership 5. Graduate Student Representative: responsible for running graduate student acitivities (must be a grad student, but all can vote) 6-8. Open Committee Seats: Three open Seats on the Executive Committee Represent membership of AoIR, contribute to decision making. In addition the Graduate Student candidates must confirm in their response that they comply with the by-laws: the Graduate Student Representative must be actively enrolled in a degree program at the time of nomination and election and intends to be enrolled for the coming northen academic year (defined to be September 2007-June 2008) The voting system used by AoIR is one vote per member for each of the seven positions for election listed above. Votes are counted by a ballot counter who is a member of the Association but not a member of the executive. In the case of the four officers, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner; in the case of the open seats, the three candidates with the highest, second-highest and third highest votes shall be declared the winners of the open seats. In the case of the Graduate Student representative, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner In the case of tied results for the officer positions, the winner shall be determined by the ballot counter, by drawing of lots, using a method that ensures each of the tying candidates has an equal chance of success and witnessed by at least 1 person independent of the association. In the case of tied results for the open seat positions, the drawing of lots shall be used only when there are more tied candidates than seats available. Hi all, I have posted a draft of the conference schedule for AoIR 8.0 at http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=IR8_Program It's an excel file to download, but it isn't too large (83 kb) so there should be no problem in accessing it. The file contains the scheduling for panel sessions, paper sessions, and roundtables for October 17-20. I haven't included the keynotes, pre-conference information, or birds of feather or other sessions yet. You'll note that all sessions are 90 minutes long, with 4-5 presenters on average (except for roundtables). We are averaging 8-9 parallel sessions per time slot and we have what looks like an excellent lineup. I'll gush more later, but there are many, many sessions that I am excited about attending. DIGITAL CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION (DCC) SECTION OF ECREA CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A WORKSHOP DIGITAL MEDIA: EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVES? SUPPORTED BY THE CENTRE FOR MATERIAL DIGITAL CULTURE (SUSSEX) The aim of the workshop is to explore distinctive critical, theoretical and methodological perspectives around networked and pervasive media, especially those emerging in European research. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, BRIGHTON, UK; 1-3 NOVEMBER 2007 o Evening panel session and reception on Thursday 1st November o Full-day workshop on Friday 2nd o Concluding section meeting on Saturday 3rd This workshop is the first in a biannual conference/workshop series of ECREA's Digital Culture and Communication section. It will examine new approaches in the study of digital culture and communication within European contexts and to serve as a networking hub. CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS: We are looking for papers that address questions around digital, networked and pervasive media in a European context. We especially welcome work that contrasts European perspectives and theories with other traditions. This does not mean that we restrict our focus to European policy, or wish to focus on European-specific issues to the exclusion of others. Instead, we welcome work across a range of approaches, work based on different methodologies, and work that is nationally based within Europe. Historical, critical and technological perspectives are all welcome. So, for example, we invite proposals that examine digital culture and communication in relation to: o issues in specific national traditions of thought, such as German medium theory, French post-structuralism, 'national' traditions of cultural studies o issues in European-wide traditions, such as post- and neo-Marxist socialism, post-autonomy, and network theories, or critical utopian/dystopian thinking o issues of specific techno-social experiences, such as communication networks, aesthetic, industry, and governance structures o issues of identity, activism and autonomy, such as race, nation, migration, gender/sexuality, trade, economy, and labour We invite proposals for papers on these topics and any other issues that might enable a critique of, as well as an exploration of issues, theories and approaches emerging in European research around digital media.
