Thanks Robert. But I already had the IC3 reports, and they focus on white collar crime (fraud in particular). I'm looking for data on violent crime, including assault. I can't find any hard numbers. A lecture that may be of interest to some of our UK-based members. ---- Folksonomy: A look at a hated word but a loved resource 2:00-3:30PM, September 18, 2007. Free and open to the public. Room 0.01, Clephan Building, De Montfort University, Leicester UK. LE1 9BH "Folksonomy" was recently voted one of the new terms most likely to make you "wince, shudder or want to bang your head on the keyboard." This talk by the inventor of the term – Thomas Vander Wal – will offer you a chance to make your own judgment. The talk is open to all and will not require any specialist knowledge on behalf of the audience. A Folksonomy can be created when users of "web2.0" sites such as YouTube, Flickr, LastFM and Del.icio.us add keywords ("tags") to the items they view in order to add information about these items. As more and more users tags such items more information is created about the the items. Unlike library catalogues which are created by experts, folksonomies are like catalogues created by everyday people. For some, this heralds a brave new era of democratic information management, for others it heralds the death of expertise. Thomas Vander Wal lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and this is a rare opportunity to hear him in the UK. He coined the term "folksonomy" in 2004 and is a popular speaker on tagging/folksonomy, social web, and web applications around well structured information. He is principal, and senior consultant at InfoCloud Solutions, a social web consulting firm. Thomas has been working professionally on the web since 1995 (with a professional IT background beginning in 1988) and has breadth and depth across many roles and disciplines around web design, social web development & research and general web development. He is a member of the Web Standards Project Steering Committee and helped found the Information Architecture Institute and Boxes & Arrows web magazine. It is a unique speculative project assessing the potential for collaborative social-software techniques such as folksonomy in narrative research. The project explores: * What kinds of collaborative social network tools are available for the gathering and classification of information? * Which researchers are making online narratives the focus of study, and how are those projects categorised by discipline? * How can these researchers make effective use of social network tools to share knowledge and develop interdisciplinary collaborations? The project is based in the Institute of Creative Technologies (IOCT) at De Montfort University, Leicester UK and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board from October 2006-September 2007. crime statistics?

A friend of mine, Allyson Beatrice, wrote a book that came out last month titled "Will The Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby?" (Allyson and I met through our mutual interest in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") The book is not a scholarly work, more a collection of anecdotal essays about Allyson's experiences in online fan groups, including The Bronze (subject of the documentary I made: http://www.dlfilms.com/irl/index.html) She's been doing interviews this week and she's about ready to kill some of the interviewers who seem determined to try and compel her to say the Internet is just a big cesspool of pedophiles and rapists and so on. Are there any hard statistics on crime being perpetrated on the Internet? I'm not talking about identity theft or fraud or even possession of child porn, I'm talking about criminal activities like kidnapping and assault being perpetrated specifically through the net. My Web-fu is not coming up with anything other than a report from 1999 that is all percentages and no hard numbers. PS - the book is very funny, although Allyson takes some swipes at the Buffy fan/academics in the beginning. Worth a look for a non-academic perspective on the Internet in people's lives. The symposium includes members of many SIGs. MEDIA STUDIES POSITION: Media and Society Deadline: October 1, 2007 The Media Studies Department at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, anticipated to begin Fall 2008. Responsibilities include teaching two undergraduate courses per semester, plus one additional course over two years (2-2-2-3 over two years), and an active program of research and service. The wisdom of crowds? an interesting experiment in the UK...

Hi folks Thought I'd flag up an interesting and amusing experiment into the "wisdom of crowds" going on in the UK. One to read over your tea/ coffee break. "My Football Club" http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk/ goes one step further than "Fantasy Football Leagues" and sports computer games and instead proposes that a group of people club together to buy a real football club and manage it in real life via a website. The project invites people to pay 35 pounds sterling to become a member, and then you get a vote in choosing what club the community should buy, and help to choose the team. So far they've got over 50,000 people signed up and a fund of 1.375 million (sterling) to buy a team. Football in England and Wales is organised into multiple leagues, the top four comprising of 92 professional teams. While the top teams such as Manchester United and Chelsea are huge multinational corporations, many of the teams in the lower of the four leagues and indeed the semi-professional 'feeder' leagues below operate on much smaller budgets so a million pounds is actually a realistic purchase price for some reasonably well known clubs. The project looks to be formally registered with the financial authorities (it doesn't feel like a scam) and has been garnering a lot of publicity, tapping into the romantic belief that every fan knows better than the manager about which players should have been selected for that crucial big match, and giving them the opportunity to do so. The project proposes that when a team is bought, the existing manager will be moved to be "head coach" and he will advise members via the website: " How will the team be picked? The Head Coach will brief members. This will include a review of the previous match, reports from the training ground and views on the forthcoming opposition. He will also give his thoughts on players, their form and fitness, as well as possible selections and tactics. Members will then submit their preferred 11, formation and tactics. A database will calculate the most popular choice. This will be handed to The Head Coach to instigate. " (http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk/faq.php) I'm really intrigued to see how this develops. Can 50,000 people steer a real life football team through a website? Some interesting technical as well as social questions in there - how debates and conflicts will get resolved on the forums will be interesting to say the least. Talk about a passionate, active web community... some intriguing research in there for sure. I am very tempted to start tracking this one! kind regards Mark p.s. Social Networks, Gender and Friending: An Analysis of MySpace Member Profiles

It seems that in MySpace females are more sought after as friends by both males and females - does this match most people's expectations? Social Networks, Gender and Friending: An Analysis of MySpace Member Profiles Abstract In 2007, the social networking web site MySpace apparently overthrew Google as the most visited web site for U.S. web users. If this heralds a new era of widespread online social networking, then it is important to investigate user behaviour and attributes. Although there has been some research into social networking already, basic demographic data is essential to set previous results in a wider context and to give insights to researchers, marketers and developers. In this article the demographics of MySpace members are explored through data extracted from two samples of 15,043 and 7,627 member profiles. The median declared age of users was surprisingly high at 21, with a small majority of females. The analysis confirmed some previously reported findings and conjectures about social networking, for example that female members tend to be more interested in friendship and males more interested in dating. In addition, there was some evidence of three different friending dynamics: oriented towards close friends, acquaintances, or strangers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, female and younger members had more friends than others, and females were more likely to maintain private profiles, but males and females both seemed to prefer female friends, with this tendency more marked in females for their closest friend. The typical MySpace user is apparently female, 21, single, with a public profile, interested in online friendship and logging on weekly to engage with a mixed list of mainly female friends who are predominantly acquaintances.
