Best, Olli --------- Call for Papers: Game Studies Seminar, Tampere 10-11 April, 2008 *Note the closing abstract deadline: January 15, 2008.* New: the seminar web site: http://breakingmagiccircle.wordpress.com One of the classic theories of games and play was presented by Johan Huizinga in his work Homo Ludens (orig. from 1938). Huizinga wrote about the free and voluntary nature of play, how it is "an activity connected with no material interest" and how it "proceeds within its own proper boundaries of time and space", involving and absorbing players utterly into a separate world set off from the "ordinary" life, while being created and maintained by communities of players. Huizinga's view has become widely known within contemporary game studies, and it is often referred as the 'Magic Circle' view on games and play. This concept has also been widely criticised, as it has become increasingly obvious how various "games external" areas play an important role in digital play, and also because digital games have become more widely enmeshed with and applied into various economical, educational and other social and cultural processes and uses. "Breaking the Magic Circle" seminar invites presentations from multiple points of view, including theoretical as well as empirically based studies into that question or expand existing conceptions regarding digital games and play. Particular fields of study might include, but are not limited to: ? pervasive, mobile or location based gaming, ? alternate reality gaming ? casual, non-immersive or coincidental forms of play, ? professional gaming, ? money gaming, betting and gambling within digital games and play. The seminar is fourth in the annual series of game studies working paper seminars organised by the Games Research Lab in the University of Tampere. Due to the work-in-progress emphasis, we strongly encourage submitting late breaking results, working papers and/or submissions from graduate students. Early considerations from projects currently in progress are most welcome, as the purpose of the seminar is to have peer-to-peer discussions and thereby provide support in refining and improving research work in this area. After the seminar, separate consideration will be given to various options of publishing the seminar papers. The papers to be presented will be chosen based on abstract review. Full papers are distributed prior the event to all participants, in order to facilitate discussion. The two-day event consists of themed sessions that aim to introduce current research projects and discuss ongoing work in studies of games, play and their relation to surrounding phenomena. The seminar will be chaired by professor Frans Mäyrä (Hypermedia Laboratory, University of Tampere). Paper commentators include researchers Markus Montola (University of Tampere), Aki Järvinen (Veikkaus) and Simon Niedenthal, Associate Professor of interaction design (Malmö University). previous research on dalits online?

Greetings to all list-members, I am a lecturer in sociologi of religion and media, religion and culture at Uppsala university, Sweden. I will this semester be supervising a master thesis on "Ambedkar as an icon of dalit-assertion: Post-Ambedkar discourses and representations on the Internet". The focus is to study how the dalit-movement (a marginalised social group in India) construct and strengthen their identity through relating themselves and their claims to the central figure of the movement Dr Amdebkar. The intention of my student is further to study both iconic representations of Amdebkar and transformations of his symbolic meaning in the process. I would be very grateful for any information of previous research in this area, that is the dalit-movement and uses of the internet. Also other studies of the role of the internet in hindu minority movements with political and religious claims would be helpful of course, or on the construction of religious leaders as icons for such groups through the internet. Religious Dimension of Sustainable Development

With best wishes for a good 2008, Luis ----------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY The theme of the month is "religious dimension of sustainable development." There is a religious dimension to the United Nations' "Millennium Development Goals" (MDGs), and there is a religious dimension to human nature and everything we do. Religion is both indispensable and dangerous. It is indispensable to attain full human development beyond the physical, biological, and intellectual levels. It is dangerous when it degenerates into fanatical delusions about the absolute superiority of any particular religion, and then leads to religious intolerance and religious violence. Many consider religion to be a controversial topic. But, after millennia of misconceptions about religion, we now have scientific evidence (initially via the Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung) that religion is essential for human beings to become fully human. This being the case, our 2007 analyses of the MDGs is incomplete as long as some insight of the religious influences on the implementation of the MDGs is not provided. A difficult subject, but it cannot be avoided. In particular, religion is often an incentive (positive or negative) for the transition from patriarchy to solidarity, sustainability, and human development. Granted that financial gain (or loss) will probably remain as the key incentive for people to change behavior during our lifetime, futures research entails considering all conceivable possibilities. For instance, Abraham Lincoln once stated: "When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion." Lincoln's "religion" many not qualify as religion in some quarters, but it points to the fact that, deep in the human psyche, there is the voice of conscience; the voice of God who abides in us but is bigger than us. After a brief summary of the MDGs (or "MDGs+1" when religious development is considered), evidence is presented that a cultural transition is needed to support both social justice and environmental justice at all levels. This cultural transition will entail changes in human behavior that often cannot be accomplished even when there are financial incentives. Indeed, it is hard to imagine any such transition happening without incentives that are stronger than financial gain and/or resources for domination. Since the power of religion as incentive for changing human behavior (for good or bad) is pervasive, it seems reasonable to research this angle next. This religious dimension has not been absent from any of the previous issues of this newsletter, but now it will become central. Incentives from a religious perspective are discussed for overcoming patriarchy and fostering social solidarity, environmental sustainability, and human development. In considering this material, it is essential to distinguish between "religion" and "religious institutions." Authentic religion is the expression of our relationship with God, and it is "good, good, good." Institutionalized religion can be "good, bad, or some mix of good and bad." Some specific religious institutions are mentioned. The intent is never to deny the significant amount of good done by those institutions. However, nothing human is above criticism. Religious institutions often need reformations, just like all other human institutions often need reformations. Some religious persons may feel uncomfortable. As always, we shall adhere to the principle of analysis based on objective evidence. Updates of the SSNV-MDG knowledge taxonomy and links database continue as time permits. The current version shows the links sorted by mega-disciplines, and within each mega-discipline by MDGs. This month's invited paper is "Two Wings of a Bird: The Equality of Women and Men," a reflection by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the United States, published in 1997. The Baha'i religious tradition emerged in Persia (now Iran) in the 18th century. It is the first major religious movement that explicitly includes gender equality as a core belief.

While ubiquitous and wireless technologies are developed to enable new ways of working, to increase safety and to facilitate coordination, they may interfere with established work practices, undermine productivity and individuals’ satisfaction, and have an unforeseen impact on relations of power and control. These issues, however, are rarely addressed in development and research projects for the Internet of Things and in the public discourses surrounding it. We are interested in research, that addresses a wide range of social and organisational issues, such as organisational flexibility, organisational alignment, working roles, practices and strategies, and power and control. The workshop has the goal to increase awareness of organisational issues of the Internet of Things and to provide a forum for discussion of design approaches to manage critical organisational issues. Furthermore we would like to build a bridge between the various research communities exploring organisational, social and cultural aspects of the Internet of Things and ubiquitous computing. A multitude of methods and guidelines (e.g. participatory design, work place studies, ethnomethodology, resilience engineering, socio- technical system approach, scenario-based design, ANT) have been developed to address organisational, human and social issues in technology design, deployment and use. However, those methods have often not yet been adopted and tested for the Internet of Things or ubiquitous computing. We encourage submissions presenting a particular design method to address social, cultural and organisational perspectives or relating experiences from modeling these processes within research and development projects. The Internet of Things is emerging as a powerful force for reshaping organisational and social realities, potentially affecting the (work)lives of millions of people. Current political agendas, a rising awareness of health and safety issues, security, and new legal requirements due to the European legislation often first cause the need for a new (ubiquitous) technological system and also have an impact on the role ubiquitous computing plays. Dear All, Charles Ess wrote "Let me suggest that the discussion turn to greater elaboration of the basic definitions and underlying assumptions of "science" as a mode of knowledge." sorry for the changes in font here :-) but i just wanted briefly first of all to thank Charles and to say i think that word mode should go into bold type or sumpn that will highlight its importance. frankly i find some importance in the root meanings both of philosophy and religion. then i think its interesting that literature/philosophy accepts more readily that theres always already aporias in texts. at the same time, perhaps the idea of the aporia is implicit in the concept of the quantum. ive read that quanta apply only to subatomic realms, but im not sure whether thats not a question of definitions. thanks to all for the discussion! New Sociotechnical Insights in Interaction Design Call for Papers Workshop on sociotechnical insights in interaction design (Sociotech-ID'08) May 30th in BCS Offices in London, United Kingdom http://iit.tvu.ac.uk/sociotech-id08 A joint event of the BCS Interaction and Sociotechnical groups Aims and goals of the workshop Diverse areas of the social sciences explore and conceptualize the relation between people, society and technology under the rubric of 'sociotechnical', which can bring interesting insights into interaction design. Organizational studies of technology adoption have a well defined conceptual framework known as sociotechnical systems theory with established principles. However, the situation is not the same for interaction design research, which gives diverse uses to the term 'sociotechnical' when involving social methods and theories. Methodological perspectives like ethnography, ethnomethodology and activity theory have had a clear impact in interaction design, but the potential contribution of other areas of the social sciences has not become so clear and uniform despite the increased development of the pervasive and social proxy - mediating and mediated -- characters of interactive systems. This workshop will bring together good examples of research in interaction design that refer to the term 'sociotechnical'. The challenge is to achieve some level of 'translation' despite differences between disciplines whose main interest is understanding social phenomena and disciplines whose main interest is the design of interactive systems. It is hoped the workshop will identify opportunities for a sociotechnical knowledge framework in interaction design. Submissions are welcome in, but are not limited to, the following topics: * Actionable recommendations and guidelines for the conception design and evaluation of interactive systems as 'social proxies' * Improved methods for the gathering and elicitation of sociotechnical requirements for interaction design * Social Interaction Design and Web 2.0 * Socially responsible policies for interaction design * Participatory design as a sociotechnical endeavour * Sociotechnical dynamics of multidisciplinary teams in the context of novel user-centred development methodologies. * Culture and interaction design Submission The following types of submission are solicited: long paper submissions of up to 5,000 words, describing substantial contributions of novel ongoing work; short paper submissions of up to 2,000 words, describing work in progress. All papers must be written and presented in English and will be peer reviewed by at least 2 reviewers. Submissions will be evaluated according to the relevance and originality of the work and to their ability to generate discussions between the participants of the workshop. Large Grants provide up to $30,000 in support for academic-advocacy research collaborations designed to change media and telecommunications infrastructure, practices, or policies in support of a richer and more democratic public sphere. The Deadline for an initial 'letter of inquiry' (<1000 words) is February 8 (12PM EST), submitted via email to mediahub(a)ssrc.org with subject line: "Collaborative Grant Letter of Inquiry" Large grants are awarded once a year through a competitive application process, with recipients selected by an independent committee of researchers and advocates. In 2007, grants of $30,000 were awarded to six projects. A similar number will be awarded in this round. (International proposals will be solicited via SSRC partner organizations) The program encourages a wide range of project types and goals, supporting projects that: * Address issues of disparate impact on communities on the basis of race, class, gender, ethnicity, age or other identity/status category * Build capacity-skills, tools, experience, access to data sets-within the "user" organization and/or community * Have a clear plan for the dissemination of the research to target audiences * Have uses outside the immediate intended context * Use methods or models of research that have proved effective in similar contexts * Reflect diversity in the staff or group involved with the project * Involve collaboration between two or more advocacy/community groups in the project design and the plan of use for the research * Use participatory methods to engage community and/or advocacy group members in framing the questions, data collection, and/or analysis Overall, the program has rewarded projects on a wide range of topics, from digital inclusion, to the future of community media, to analysis of media industry structure and barriers to entry.
