Philippa, Just in case it's of any help, I've recently finished a piece on the same subject (i.e. the relation between new technologies and the construction of national identities). It's due to come out shortly as 'WikiNation: On Peace and Conflict in the Middle East', Cultural Politics, Volume 5, Issue 1, 2008, pp.5-26. I've provided an abstract for you below. But a wikified, open access, open editing and free content version of the whole essay is available at: http://hyper-cyprus.pbwiki.com/Hyper-Cyprus Gary *Abstract* This article begins by analysing critically the usefulness of the recent political philosophy of Chantal Mouffe for reconceptualising ideas of peace and conflict. It takes as its focus for doing so the situation of the Middle East. It proceeds to show how Mouffe’s radical democratic politics is actually just another form of the liberalism of Habermas and Rawls she positions her theory against. The essay then explores the potential digital media hold for making affirmative, affective, hyper-political interventions in specific contents and singular situations. The Digital Revolution and the Church

I have written a paper entitled, 'The Digital Revolution and the Church', in which I outline the characteristics of the phenomenal internet driven digital revolution presently sweeping the globe. I particularly focus on how it is affecting human behavior, which offers some insights into how we as a church might need to respond. The opening paragraph reads, There is a revolution sweeping across the globe, driven by the massive growth of the internet and internet related technologies. Known as the Digital Revolution it is on par with other great global shifts such as the Agrarian Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. And it is completely changing the landscape of how we communicate, how we influence, how we relate. This isn’t simply about coming to grips with a new technology to assist us in our work, but requires of us a fundamental shift in our processes, our structures and approaches. The data reflects ten years of Irish online life, collected between 1998 and 2008 from boards.ie. boards.ie is one of Ireland's busiest websites, with over a million unique visitors a month. The most popular discussion areas are 'after hours', soccer, motors, poker, and computers. Popular topic threads include one about a virtual pub (over 4000 pages), member discussions (2800 pages), poker stories (1800 pages), Liverpool rumours (1250 pages), recruitment in the Gardaí (800 pages long), and a freebie list (250 pages). To enter the competition, go to http://data.sioc-project.org/ to access the data sets and view the guidelines. There will be three prizes for the top entries, as judged by an independent panel of three experts.
