Colleagues/ Academics: Big Virtual World TrailBlazers /Gerry Chronicle of Higher Education May 8, 2008 Co-Founder of Second Life Says Academics Are Biggest Trailblazers in Virtual Worlds Cory Ondrejka, the co-founder of the virtual world Second Life who is now a visiting professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, said in a speech today that virtual worlds are here to stay, and that professors are among the most active pioneers. I view the academy as having been the blazing trail of adoption of virtual worlds far more than gamers or industry, said Mr. Ondrejka, who spoke at a conference at Case Western Reserve University called Collaboration Technology and Engaging the Campus 2008. I attended the conference virtually, and was able to ask Mr. Ondrejka what the biggest challenge for Second Life was in being able to be more than just a passing fad in higher education. [snip] Mr. Ondrejka said that when professors first build a virtual campus, they usually try to exactly replicate a classroom in Second Life, with desks, chairs, and walls. But then they realize that the world allows different kinds of movement and communication than the real world. You realize that in a world where you can fly, classrooms arent really that useful, he said. So professors have built new kinds of classrooms online with no roofs. Value of participation in online spaces toward tenure promotions

I am seeking resources about the value judgments that are being made by higher education administrators toward faculty participation in online spaces as opposed to other traditional venues. The request for information comes out of an ongoing conversation with members of an online community of practice. This CoP was formerly enabled by the listserve technology. The person who started the listserve was a faculty member at Penn State. The listserve was also administered at Penn State. The CoP is now a YAHOO group after the faculty member made the decision to relinquish control to others. Concerns have recently been raised about the vitality of the group. Some of the "old timers" are bringing historical information into the discussion, including issues related to changes in member composition. I mentioned that the composition of members possibly changed because of the value that some university administrators place on faculty spending time/sharing information with others in online spaces that are not affiliated with a university, research foundation, professional association, or other identifiable entity. I seem to recall there was a conversation or two in the past that explored this and other closely related issues but not able to locate them in the archives. UK studentship award: the internet and the archive

Arts and Humanties Research Council collaborative doctoral award: the internet and the archive School of Education, University of Edinburgh, UK Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), UK This studentship, fully funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, with additional funding from the collaborating partner, will support three years of full-time study. The student will investigate how the internet is changing the way users engage with, and learn from, the collections of cultural institutions, with supervision provided by Dr Sian Bayne (University of Edinburgh) and Ms Rebecca Bailey (RCAHMS). Basing the study on the online education and outreach activities of RCAHMS, the broad remit of the project is to explore how new online media environments change and challenge the curatorial and outreach responsibilities of museums, galleries and archives. The studentship covers all UK fees, and includes an allowance of £12,940 per academic year, plus an additional annual £1,500 maintenance payment provided by the AHRC and RCAHMS. Students may also be eligible for UK study visits and one overseas study visit as well as one overseas conference for the duration of the award. Europe in One Room We are fortunate to have the opportunity to preview the rough cut of Europe in One Room during the symposium. This new documentary tells the story of the first European Wide Deliberative Poll in which a scientific sample of all of Europe gathered in the Parliament Building in Brussels in October 2007 to deliberate for three days about the future of Europe. Each of the 27 countries were represented and the issues were discussed in 22 languages. Told through the eyes of the participants and organizers, this unprecedented experiment in transnational democracy shows that dialogue across differences of language and nationality is possible. This project is based on the work of Stanford professor Jim Fishkin who will be present at the showing. Open Space Session We're planning an Open Space Technology session on "Towards an Agenda for Online and Offline Public Participation" as a capstone event on the last day of the conference, June 29. This event will be free to the public (although donations are strongly encouraged). The open space approach may be the best way to spend less structured time as a collective group to formulate research and action plans. eRulemaking at the Crossroads, v.2.0 a pre-conference workshop at The 9th International Conference on Digital Government Research, May 18-21, 2008 Sunday May 18, 2008 - 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Overview The topic of eRulemaking has gained prominence in the Digital Government research community as well as the federal government. In 2006, a dg.o workshop examined "eRulemaking at a Crossroads". Over the past seven years, spurred by funding from the NSF's Digital Government program and other US agencies, government officials, citizens, activists, business leaders, and a wide range of scholars at Pitt , CMU , USC-ISI , and Cornell , have converged around the specific problem of building tools to manage the flow of public comments into the U.S. federal government. At the same time, the Office of Management and Budget has overseen the development of government-wide eRulemaking Initiative, now 5 years old, which created Regulations.Gov , a portal for reviewing all open rulemakings, and a Federal Docket Management System (FDMS). Meanwhile, a special committee of the American Bar Association is preparing a report on the "Status & Future of Federal e-Rulemaking". A vigorous debate still continues about the utility of mass public comment campaigns and alternate means for promoting citizen engagement.
