Hello all, Many of you have helped me compile a list of technology metaphors. Several asked to see the list. So here we go. The following is a list of metaphors related to technology and its use. The emphasis is clearly on digital technology but some others are in there as well. If you have additions to the list PLEASE do send them along, I would like to keep the list growing. If you have a dispute or other comment that should make for interesting conversation, as metaphorical as it might be on a mail list. Kate, Don't know if it will be helpful or not, but I saw the "God and Gays" documentary about a year ago. Since then, the creators have been using the Web pretty heavily to continue their work and to start a conversation with people. Just a reminder as the July 15, 2008 deadline for paper proposals approaches: Third Annual GigaNet Symposium 2 December 2008 - Hyderabad, India Hyderabad, India International Conference Center (HICC) Call for Papers This is a call for papers from scholars interested in presenting an original research paper at the conference. Submission topics In addition to papers on methodological aspects of Internet governance-related studies, this year's Symposium particularly encourages submissions on the following themes, which are described in more detail below: 1. Comparing Internet Governance to other Global Governance Domains 2. Networked Governance Theories and the Institutionalization of Internet Governance 3. The Role of NGOs, Social Movements and Civil Society in Internet Governance 4. Year 3 of the UN Internet Governance Forum: Assessing its Structure, Process and Impact 5. Law and Jurisdictions in Internet Governance 6. Copyright Protection, Internet Service Providers and Technical Mechanisms of Control 7. Internationalized Domain Names: Expanding Access or Tower of Babel? Submission requirements Applicants should submit: 1) an abstract of 800-1000 words, in English, of the proposed paper that describes the main research question(s), methods employed, and the paper’s relevance and value to the thematic area; and 2) a one page summary curriculum vitae listing in particular the applicant’s current institutional affiliation(s), advanced degrees, scholarly publications relevant to Internet governance, and web sites, if available. Submission materials should be emailed directly to the chairperson of the 2008 Program Committee, Dr. Meryem Marzouki, at Meryem.Marzouki(a)lip6.fr by no later than July 15, 2008, midnight GMT. Members of the 2008 program committee will review submissions according to the same criteria. In order to ensure fairness of the evaluation process, submissions that do not conform to the requested format will not be considered. The Program Committee will notify applicants of its decisions via email by September 15, 2008. A full paper upon which oral or poster presentation will be based must be delivered to the same address by October 10, 2008, midnight GMT in order for the author(s) to be included in the program. While GigaNet asserts no copyright to authors’ work, it is expected that the version of the paper presented orally or as poster will be made available for posting on the GigaNet website. Travel scholarships for a few outstanding accepted papers may be available for scholars who would otherwise be unable to attend. Does anyone have a more description term other than "spam blog" for sites like the one below ? Queer Spiritual Spaces and Digital Culture

Dear AoIR-L I am involved in a project - queer spiritual spaces - the web site is here: <http://www.queerspiritualspaces.com/index.php> The specific case study that I am working on examines the intersection of queer spiritual spaces and digital culture - I have a lot of material around religion online (on the one hand) and queer online (on the other) - but I have found less at the queer/digital/spiritual intersection. So I have two inquiries: a) Does anyone have any references for work at this intersection - queer/digital/spiritual (not for each separate category) b) Is anyone else involved in research of a similar/connected kind or know of similar projects? Hi Kate and list ~ I don't know of any literature on queer/digital/spiritual, but would also be interested in reading anything in the area. In terms of query in b), I'm currently involved in an ethnography of a LGBTQ homeless youth shelter (http://www.homelessyouthservices.org) It's actually a network of several shelters that are a ministry of a queer church based in New York City (http://www.mccny.org) At the moment, I'm finishing a paper about the use of digital media by the queer youth at the shelter. Two quick take aways from this preliminary bit of work is: 1) in contrast to the popular media images of 'the homeless,' these kids work hard to never be read as homeless; and 2) their lives are completely immersed in digital culture in ways that help them survive on NYC streets. Hi Folks, I'm the author of the Internet reference site http://www.livinginternet.com/ , and was lucky enough to get the FreeOpenSourceSoftware.* domains. As you probably know, much of the Internet was originally built on varieties of free software. I have donated this domain to the community and set up a wiki. The purpose is to provide a home for documentation of pure FOSS, free in all versions, as separate from Commercial Open Source with proprietary versions. I've seeded it with starting information.
