As the Canadian election campaign swings into full gear, I just thought I would write and add another source for on-line informational politics in Canada: The Infoscape Research Lab (IRL) at Ryerson University. The IRL tracks a number of social media sites and we are interested in partnerships and other opportunities for working on Canadian politics on-line. Please explore the IRL’s website at: http://www.infoscapelab.ca All the best, Peter --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Malachy Ryan, PhD Candidate Instructor, Department of Politics and Public Administration Rogers Fellow, Communication and Culture Programme Infoscape Lab Research Associate: www.infoscapelab.ca Ryerson University ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Alfred Hermida <alfred.hermida(a)ubc.ca> Date: Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 6:03 PM Subject: [Air-L] Tracking social media buzz in Canada To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Here at the UBC School of Journalism we have just launched a new online project, tracking the social media buzz on the federal elections. "IRL" now available for direct download
by Stephanie Tuszynski 09 Sep '08

Hello all - First, I'm afraid I won't be seeing everyone in Copenhagen this year, as finances are just too tight right now. If any AOIRers will be at the Flow Conference in Austin prior to that, though, let me know! Amazon has finally processed everything and IRL (http://www.dlfilms.com/irl/index.html) is now available for direct download through Amazon Unbox. The cost for a direct download is $17.95 US, which is $12 cheaper than purchasing the DVD, although none of the special features from the DVD are included. I was unable to make it available to rent via Amazon Unbox, due to their rules on how long a video must be to qualify for rental, unfortunately. URL: http://www.amazon.com/IRL-In-Real-Life/dp/B001DIRTB6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=d… That URL will take you to a page that will open a Flash video player. If you want to search for the film on Amazon, you have to search in the category "Video Downloads" rather than just in "movies/DVD." This is pretty much the final stage of releasing the film, for which I'm thankful. It's been a 5 year journey to get to this point (good Lord, 5 years!). Cheers. Hi folks If you haven't seen this article from the NYTimes on the new "digital intimacy", check it out. Our own AoIR celeb, Danah Boyd, is quoted. :) My favourite quote comes from Laura Fitton though: “I outsource my entire life,” she said. “I can solve any problem on Twitter in six minutes.” Yikes! :0 Rhiannon

Electronic Literature Collection, Vol. 2 — Call for Work (9/30/08)
by Mark Marino 08 Sep '08

08 Sep '08

For anyone on the list doing creative work in new media, I'm resending this call as a reminder. Please help circulate! Best, Mark Electronic Literature Collection, Vol. 2 — Call for Work (9/30/08) The Electronic Literature Organization seeks submissions for the Electronic Literature Collection, volume 2. We invite the submission of literary works that take advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the computer. Works will be accepted from June 1 to September 30, 2008. Up to three works per author will be considered; previously published works will be considered. The Electronic Literature Collection is a biannual publication of current and older electronic literature in a form suitable for individual, public library, and classroom use. Volume 1, presently available both online (http://collection.eliterature.org) and as a packaged, cross-platform CD-ROM, has been used in dozens of courses at universities in the United States and internationally, and has been widely reviewed in the United States and Europe. It is also available as a CD-ROM insert with N. Katherine Hayles' full-length study, Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary (University of Notre Dame Press, 2008). Volume 2, comprising approximately 50 works, will likewise be available online, and as a cross-platform DVD in a case appropriate for library processing, marking, and distribution. The contents of the Collection are offered under a Creative Commons license so that libraries and educational institutions will be allowed to duplicate and install works and individuals will be free to share the disc with others. The editorial collective for the second volume of the Electronic Literature Collection, to be published in 2009, is Laura Borràs Castanyer, Talan Memmott, Rita Raley and Brian Kim Stefans. This collective will review the submitted work and select pieces for the Collection. Literary quality will be the chief criterion for selection of works. Other aspects considered will include innovative use of electronic techniques, quality and navigability of interface, and adequate representation of the diverse forms of electronic literature in the collection as a whole. For volume 2, we are considering works of electronic literature in video. Works submitted should function on both Macintosh OS X (10.5) and Windows Vista. Works should function without requiring users to purchase or install additional software. Submissions may require software that is typically pre-installed on contemporary computers, such as a web browser, and are allowed to use the current versions of the most common plugins. To have a work considered, all the authors of the work must agree that if their work is published in the Collection, they will license it under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 License, which will permit others to copy and freely redistribute the work, provided the work is attributed to its authors, that it is redistributed non-commercially, and that it is not used in the creation of derivative works. No other limitation is made regarding the author's use of any work submitted or accepted. To submit a work, prepare a plain text file with the following information: * The title of the work. * The names and email addresses of all authors and contributors of the work. * The URL where you are going to make your .zip file available for us to download. The editorial collective will not publish the address of this file. * A short description of the work — less than 200 words in length. * Any instructions required to operate the work. * The date the work was first distributed or published, or "unpublished" if it has not yet been made available to the public. Prepare a .zip archive including the work in its entirety. Include the text file at the top level of this archive, and name it "submisson.txt". Upload the .zip file to a web server so that it is available at the specified location. Place all of the text in the "submisson.txt" file in the body of an email and send it to elc2.elo(a)gmail.com with the name of the piece being submitted included in the subject line. The Electronic Literature Collection is supported by institutional partners including: Brown University, Literary Arts Program; Center for Program in Contemporary Writing at the University of Pennsylvania; Duke University, Program in Literature; Hermeneia at the Open University of Catalonia; Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies; nt2; Pomona College, Media Studies Program;UCSB, Department of English; University of Bergen, Department of Literary, Linguistic, and Aesthetic Studies, Program in Digital Culture; University of Dundee, School of Humanities. Institutional sponsorship opportunities are still available. If your organization or academic department is interested in more information, please contact Helen DeVinney, Managing Director of the ELO, at hdevinney(a)gmail.com. Mark Marino, ELO. [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] For immediate release August 28, 2008 For more information, contact: Jennifer McLennan SPARC (202) 296-2296 jennifer(a)arl.org *FIRST OPEN ACCESS DAY TO BE HELD OCTOBER 14, 2008* Washington, DC =96 August 28, 2008 =96 SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), the Public Library of Science (PLoS), and Students for FreeCulture have jointly announced the first international Ope= n Access Day. Building on the worldwide momentum toward Open Access to publicly funded research, Open Access Day will create a key opportunity for the higher education community and the general public to understand more clearly the opportunities of wider access and use of content. Open Access Day will invite researchers, educators, librarians, students, and the public to participate in live, worldwide broadcasts of events. In North America, events will be held at 7:00 PM (Eastern) and 7:00 PM (Pacific) and feature appearances from: *Sir Richard Roberts, Ph.D., F.R.S.* Joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1993 for discovering split genes and RNA splicing, one of 26 Nobel Prize- winners to sign the Open Letter to U.S. Congress in support of taxpayer access to publicly funded research, and currently at New England Biolabs, USA. [7PM Eastern] *Philip E. Bourne, Ph.D. * Philip E. Bourne is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of PLoS Computational Biology and the author of the popular PLoS Computational Biology Ten Simple Rules Series. He is Professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California San Diego, Associat= e Director of the RCSB Protein Data Bank, Senior Advisor to the San Diego Supercomputer Center, an Adjunct Professor at the Burnham Institute, and Co-Founder of SciVee. [7PM Pacific] Librarians and student organizers are invited to host meetings around the broadcast. To see a list of participating campuses and to sign up, visit th= e Open Access Day Web site at http://www.openaccessday.org. Additional international events will be announced shortly. The event will also mark the launch of the new "Voices of Open Access Video Series." Key members of the research community, including a teacher, librarian, researcher, student, patient advocate, and a funder, will speak on why they are committed to Open Access. "The momentum behind Open Access to research has been accelerating for some time now, even before the mandates at the U.S. National Institutes of Healt= h and Harvard University," said Heather Joseph, Executive Director of SPARC. "Events beyond the U.S. especially underscore the higher education community's commitment to having the access they need. Open Access Day will provide a perfect way for folks to come together, consider, and celebrate the ramifications of the global shift we're experiencing." "Open Access Day is a great opportunity to inform everyone on campus about the nature and importance of Open Access," added Nelson Pavlosky, Co- Founde= r of Students for FreeCulture. "It's really an issue that impacts everyone in the university, whether they are professors who publish, students who research, or librarians who purchase journal subscriptions. Students for FreeCulture looks forward to working with SPARC and PLoS to inform our peers, as well as faculty, staff and administration, about how Open Access can help bring publishing into the 21st Century." "Making full use of the Internet to share and reuse content without restriction is pushing scientific communication into the future," said Pete= r Jerram, CEO of PLoS. "Open Access Day acknowledges the enormous progress that's been made towards comprehensive access to research. We are pleased to be partnering with the community on this special day. We would ask our supporters to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the commencement of our publishing activities in October by participating." Open Access Day was inspired by the National Day of Action on February 15, 2007, led by Students for FreeCulture with support from the Alliance for Taxpayer Access. This year, the same partners have joined forces with PLoS, the Open Access scientific and medical Web publisher. Open Access- supportin= g organizations are also invited to take part. For details, contact the organizers. For details and to participate, visit http://www.openaccessday.org. # *SPARC* SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), with SPARC Europe and SPARC Japan, is an international alliance of more than 800 academic and research libraries working to create a more open system of scholarly communication.
