CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS James W. Carey Media Research Award 2010 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center invites self-nominations for works to be considered for its annual James W. Carey Media Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes works on topics that have been central to Carey's scholarship. Submissions might focus on technology, time, space and communication, the nature of public life, the relation between journalism and popular culture -- among others -- taking these themes in new or different directions. Applications will be evaluated based on engagement with Carey's approaches and concepts, originality, and advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of five: Prof. Stuart Adam, Poynter Institute for Media Studies Prof. Theodore L. Glasser, Stanford University Prof. John Pauly, Marquette University Prof. Jeff Pooley, Muhlenberg College Prof. Lance Strate, Fordham University Both single and multiple authored works will be accepted. All submissions must be works that have been published or have been accepted for publication in a book or journal. To be considered for the 2010 award, works should have been published or accepted in 2009. Those interested please submit a copy of their works electronically to Mark D. Johns, executive director of CCCSIR, at mjohns(a)luther.edu in plain text, Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, or Adobe Acrobat format. If the work submitted is a paper, a 100-word abstract needs to be included. Paper length is limited to 30 pages plus references. If a book is submitted, a copy of the table of contents and one chapter are sufficient. The application deadline is April 1, 2010. Notification of award application will be sent out by June 15. Internet research methods syllabi

Hello all, I will be teaching a graduate seminar on internet and technology research methods in the spring, and I'm looking for sample syllabi for similar classes. The class will be taught primarily from a communication standpoint (since that is my discipline) with many of the students coming from a rhetoric or qualitative social science perspective. However, the course will also be open to students from other disciplines, so I'm especially interested in syallabi that take a broader approach and touch on both quantitative and qualitative methods. I've been told not to expect that the students will have had any previous methods courses before this class, so I'm trying to figure out how to design a "survey of internet methods" course. Colleagues/ A Most Interesting Initiative ! /Gerry Kathleen Kennedy Manzo / Education Week / October 16, 2009 [Online] The Twitter feed for Lucas Ames' class in American history has shown some lively exchanges of ideas and opinions among students at the Flint Hill School. One day this month, 11th graders at the private school in Oakton, Va., shared articles on the separation of church and state, pondered the persistence of racism, and commented on tobacco regulation in Virginia now and during the Colonial period-all in the required Twitter format of 140 or fewer characters. Those are exactly the kinds of interactions Mr. Ames had hoped for when he decided to experiment with the microblogging tool in his classroom this school year. [snip] In discussions on the DEN, which is hosted by the Silver Spring, Md.-based Discovery Education, Mr. Dembo has noticed a significant uptick in questions and recommendations among teachers about using Twitter, mostly addressing how to simplify administrative tasks or encourage students to conduct research or collaborate with classmates and their peers across the country. Mr. Ames, the history teacher, has already seen some results in classroom participation by students, who are given the choice of participating in the Twitter feed or writing an extra research paper. [snip] Dorie Glynn, who teaches a bilingual 2nd grade class at Kirk Elementary School in Houston, has been preparing students for conversations of their own on Twitter. The students have started following other classes at the school, and across the country, as they get ready to share data on regional cultures, weather, and to play a virtual I Spy game, in which they will hunt for geometric shapes in maps and photos sent from Twitter followers in other places. With scant research on the efficacy of social-networking tools such as Twitter, and few clear insights into the best (and worst) uses for them, there is little agreement among researchers and educators about how or whether Twitter-like technologies could or should be used in schools. New Media Theory: How Far Have we Traveled? Nearly 15 years ago Merrill Morris and Christine Ogan, in their seminal work ³The Internet as Mass Medium,² chastised researchers for not taking the Internet seriously as a mass medium, noting that the introduction of any new medium must make us rethink basic theoretical assumptions in our field. They argued that the Internet threw some of our basic assumptions into question: What is an audience? What is a communication medium? How are messages mediated? Clearly the mass communication field has taken up the researchers¹ charge to conduct research on the Internet as well as other computer-mediated media and other communication devices such as the cell phone. But to what degree have we reconceptualized our theories or developed new ones to take into account unique properties of the Internet and other new communication technologies? This conference: ³New Media Theory: How Far Have we Traveled?² invites scholars to examine what influence computer-mediated communication and new communication media have on traditional theories in the field such as agenda-setting, framing, uses and gratifications and gatekeeping (to name a few) as well as explore how existing theories such as networking theory, social presence and differential gains have been applied to the Internet. The conference is co-sponsored by The Texas Tech Convergent Media Resource Center and the Communication Technology Division of AEJMC and will be held April 15th and 16th at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words by January 19th, 2010 to Techconvergence10(a)gmail.com. You will be informed of acceptance by February 19th. The top three papers will be published in the Web Journal of Mass Communication Research http://wjmcr.org/. Dear all, thanks a lot for all the recommendations! That is exactly what I needed. I'll take a look at the literature during the weekend. I'll will collect the answers and send them to the list. I am already chatting a lot with people who participate in my research. So that is not something new. However, this takes place spontaneous, involves a lot of joking and is not always related to my research. I am curious how my attempts at "formal" online interviews (narrative, a little bit structured at least at the beginning :-)) will work out. Thanks a lot again! Dear Carmen et al.... I recently gave a refereed paper at the Emerging Researchers in Ageing conference which compared the four different interviewing methods I used in my study of late life romantic relationships: face-to-face, telephone, instant messaging and email. The paper is relatively brief (only 2000 words), but may be helpful to you. Like Monica, I found IM (I used Yahoo and Hotmail) and email to be particularly good for dealing with sensitive topics, especially in my case as I was looking at issues of love, sex, intimacy and infidelity in older adult relationships - all issues which could be pretty confronting and/or embarrassing at times in the face-to-face and telephone interviews. Some men that I know from Islamic chat rooms would like to participate in interviews. However, their understanding of Islam does not allow them to talk to women that are not related to them by family. They offered to talk to me via msn (or paltalk). I would like to prepare myself and I am looking for some literature expanding on the methodology and ethcial questions of online interviews (via synchronous chat). Kraut, Carnegie Mellon University Erika Shehan Poole, Georgia Institute of Technology John C. Thomas, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center Sarita Yardi, Georgia Institute of Technology ABSTRACT: New research paradigms in CSCW come with unforeseen ethical challenges. This workshop will focus on methodological challenges in doing Internet research, with a focus on: • data collection and analysis • differing ethical norms in various research communities studying the Web • unanticipated consequences of new kinds of online research • pedagogical approaches and issues in teaching online research ethics The morning session will consist of case study presentations and discussion. The afternoon session will be a mock debate format, where participants separate into teams and argue whether or not they think the research can be conducted ethically and workshop organizers act as an ethics review board. In constructing their arguments, participants will be encouraged to brainstorm topics like possible unanticipated effects of the research, handling real outcomes (e.g. if something goes wrong), alternative methods and approaches for carrying out the research ethically, and policy and best practice implications. The afternoon debates should be challenging but fun. PARTICIPATION: Instead of traditional position papers, participants should submit a case study (can be more than one) of up to four pages describing an ethical issue that they find particularly tricky or controversial with pro and con arguments for both sides, as well as a brief cover letter describing their research interests and background in this topic.
