Second, since I am quite new to it, I'd like to ask for your suggestions a related matter: which tools could be used to analyse politicians' popularity on social networks? Please note that I'd like to find out not only the number of supporters (such as fans on FB or followers on Twitter) but also the way users "spread the word" about politicians on the web. G'day ! The CFP is now out for EDEM 2010, the 4th International Conference on eDemocracy, to be held at the Danube-University in Krems, Austria, on 6-7 May 2010. FWIW, I attended EDEM 2009 in Vienna, and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of presentations. eDem10 - 4th International Conference on eDemocracy 2010 http://www.donau-uni.ac.at/en/department/gpa/telematik/veranstaltungen/id/1… Call for Papers Scientific eDemocracy visions and models have been developed since the 1960s, but it is now, during the first decade of the 21st Century, that they are becoming reality, being tested and implemented. Extensive IT provides the necessary basis, but it is not the developments in IT alone that are responsible for successful eDemocracy projects - it is due all those who use and apply them, as they adopt new behaviours and change old ones. The new, digital generation lives and breathes new values: they collaborate, compile content together, share their ideas, create networks on social platforms and organise themselves quickly and simply. The new values held, the new behaviours adopted, the changed mindset, along with improved usability and a still-increasing use of the internet, has led to a rapid and radical change in our society. The EDem10 focuses on these changes which can be seen occurring in different areas and which are manifest in different way: * Transparency & Communication (freedom of information, free information access, openness, information sharing, blogging, micro-blogging, social networks, data visualization, eLearning, empowering, ...); * Participation & Collaboration (innovation malls, innovation communities, bottom up, top down, social networks, engagement and accountability, collaborative culture, collaboration between C2C, G2C, ...); * Architecture, Concepts & Effects (access and openness, user generated content, peer production, network effects, power laws, long tail, harnessing the power of the crowd, crowd sourcing, social web, semantic web, ...); * Different Fields: open government initiatives, eDemocracy, eParticipation, eVoting, eDeliberation; * Approaches and Disciplines: law & legal studies, social sciences, computer sciences, political sciences, psychology, sociology, applied computer gaming and simulation, democratic theory, media and communication sciences; * Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Approaches; * Research Methods. We use microblogging as an umbrella term to include status updates from social networks such as Facebook, and message- exchange services such as Twitter. Recent research has shown that people employ these services to share informal information they would likely not otherwise publish through other mediums (i.e., email, phone, IM, or weblogs). Microblogging has become quite popular quickly, catching researchers’ interests as both a means of public, social information exchange, and a medium for collaboration and communication in the work context. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to exchange insights into how microblogs are used in enterprises, academic and social settings, developing an agenda for what and how we can learn from and better study this phenomenon. CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS ----------------------------------------------- ** Submission deadline: January 6, 2010 ** Participants are asked to submit a 2-page position paper in ACM CHI Format. We encourage submissions of microblogging research work in both social context and work settings. Announcement: 2010 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, & Prediction

The 2010 International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, & Prediction (SBP10), the largest conference devoted to social science-related research in computer science, will be held March 29-April 1 on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Campus in Bethesda, MD near Washington D.C. (Short) paper and poster submissions should be submitted by November 6. As in past years, there will be opportunities to hear presentations from and talk to representatives of the largest federal funding agencies for scholarly research, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Office of Naval Research, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Conference proceedings will be published as a book in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series by Springer/Verlag. More information, including the call for papers and previous years's programs, can be found at the conference website <http://sbp.asu.edu/>. I am co-program chair this year, and am particularly interested in gaining the participation of more social scientists in order to make this a fully interdisciplinary conference. This year, we will be featuring some unique events designed to promote that interchange. The first day will be devoted to tutorial sessions, including those on computer science methods for social scientists and vice versa. Tutorials tentatively scheduled include introductions to principles of agent-based simulation; comparisons of network models in sociology, economics, and physics; and application of computational behavioral models to public health. October 19, 2009 Dear Therapists, Our names are Keely Kolmes and Dan Taube and we are licensed psychologists who would like to request your participation in our research on the effects of encountering client information on the Internet on practicing therapists. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Alliant International University. As a participant, you will be asked to complete a brief online survey covering your basic demographic information and your experiences regarding seeking or accidentally discovering client information on the Internet, on both search engines and social networking sites. We expect the survey to take between 15 and 25 minutes to complete. Your input may help establish better guidelines for managing the effects of data obtained via Internet on the therapeutic relationship. It may help therapists gain more information about working in a world with increasing potential overlap with clients in an online environment. Bolanle Texas Tech University's Communication Studies Department invites applications for a full-time, tenure track, open rank position to begin August 2010. The successful applicant should be qualified to teach the undergraduate and graduate communication theory and research methods courses. Preference will be given to the candidate who has a degree in hand, 2 or more years of full-time university teaching experience, demonstrates a solid understanding of the range and depth of philosophical underpinnings within the field (i.e., objective/discovery, interpretive, critical, and postmodern philosophies), and who is capable of teaching a broad survey of theoretical ideas and a variety of methodological approaches (i.e., critical, rhetorical, qualitative, and quantitative) that are taught in the department. Candidates with an expertise in qualitative and/or critical approaches who can teach the full range of philosophical and methodological approaches are especially sought. The successful candidate will be expected to offer appropriate service to the department, college, and university. Texas Tech University is a Carnegie Tier One reaching university that offers the most degrees for a non-land grant university in Texas. The Communication Studies Department includes Interpersonal, Organizational, and Rhetorical emphases at the undergraduate level and a Master of Arts degree. (Articles need not be completed at this time to submit.) This collection, accepted for publication by McFarland press, aims to update existing theories of orality in the light of technological advancements which have altered communication practices on a large scale. Although these shifts in communication practices affect both genders, this book looks specifically at how the last century of technological inventions have specifically affected women’s means of communication. Women have long been stereotypically associated with the oral realm. We aim to reexamine the so-called essentialist notion of women’s relation to oral culture by attending to their shifting practices at the onset of the 21st century. Moreover we seek to understand how women learn gendered talk/communication, how they have (historically) utilized this in everyday practices, and how these practices now, when combined with current technological apparatuses, allow gendered spaces to be co-opted by women to an extent that gendered “talk” might, in fact, be eliminated and/or replaced by non-gendered communication practices and androgynous “talk.” This text will be organized into three sections representing three key arguments about women and oral culture that have yet to be brought into conversation with one another. Section one will deal primarily with performative spaces where women learn and act out gendered ways of communication. Section two will delve into literary spaces, revising theories of oral literacy and residual literacy by analyzing texts where print culture and oral culture meet to further the needs of women’s communities. And section three will focus solely on technological spaces where “talk” itself is transformed in the digital era and narrative forms are forever altered. For this contributed volume, the editors seek previously unpublished essays from a wide array of disciplines and theoretical approaches. Writing may explore, but need not be limited to, the following topics: • How performative spaces (literal locations and mediated zones) construct “gendered” communication practices • How chick flicks and (feminist) television teach women how to interact with one another • How “feminine performances” revolve around exaggerated (and sometimes emotional) moments of talk, tell alls, gossip, gab. • How certain locations lend themselves more to idle chit chat than others (waiting rooms and lobbies) and how men and women fill “down” time with conversation differently within these situational spaces • How the chat of motherhood differs from other social conversation (for example, the difference between talking in front of [and about] the K-I-D-S) • How women adapt speech to fulfill the needs of different environments and the effect this has on their interpersonal communication practices • How literary (print) spaces utilize orality in the discourse(s) of “feminine” communities • What the historical practice of female letter writing reveals about women’s communication • How and when the act of diary and journal writing became a “girl” thing to do (how diaries are marketed today versus the famous canonized diaries and travel journals of the past) • How technological spaces transform “talk,” genre, and narrative form in the 21st century • How text messaging and emoticons have changed female communication patterns and friendships • How men and women’s communication has altered differently due to their active text messaging or instant messaging practices in an era of waning face-to-face communication • How contemporary media practices, and technology, change long-standing communication practices and “print” genres, such as memoir, in terms of gendered production, authorial intent, and social reception • How the autobiography genre morphed into blogging and became, initially, a masculine practice focused more on the reporting of opinions (often politically-based ones) rather than personal happenings (as associated with female autobiography) • How social networks, such as MySpace and Facebook, have un-gendered and transformed the genre of autobiography • The Internet provides a multitude of forums for a new type of “talk” emerging on screen rather than in person • How, with coded and/or ambiguous user names like AR711 and SoxFan, chatrooms and fan sites provide spaces where gender cues are erased and how this erasure may help to bring about a form of technological talk that is androgynous and free of the usual gender clues usually found in written formats that would often tie the speaker to his or her gender • Other topics related to gender and communication are welcome as well Deadline for Abstract (500 word maximum): November 15th, 2009 Please send abstract and a brief biographical statement to Sarah Burcon & Melissa Ames at: *sburcon(a)gmail.com* <sburcon(a)gmail.com> and *mames(a)eiu.edu*<mames(a)eiu.edu>.
