Folks were asking today about communities of practice in relation to ICTs. Just so happens that our editorial team (Chris Nippert-Eng, me, Jess Collins, Julie Amoroso) is right now putting together the final version of the special CITASA issue of Information COmmunication and Society -- due out this August. Two of the papers are CoP: Carey Sargent's study of "Local Musicians Building Global Audiences" in Richmond & Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. You can also catch Carey talking about her research on YouTube, and listen to her bank, pinko communards on their own website. Yuri Takhteyev's "Networks of Practice as Heterogeneous Actior Networks: The Case of Software Development in Brazil." The title says it all. Indeed, in the wake of reality television shows, national identity card schemes, increased social media usage and the like, publicity appears to be the order of the day. For this workshop we seek papers that discuss the issues raised for those living in environments where there is seemingly little room for privacy. As was the case last year, we intend for the workshop to be multi-disciplinary in nature, broad in the approaches participants take and issues they cover. If your work is about any aspect of digital culture, this is the workshop for you! The following are thus only indicative of potential topics that could be raised: - How do people domesticate social media in their attempts to maintain a balance in publicity and privacy? Do they? Why do they, or don't they? - What matters are raised by increased access to data about individuals and organizations? - What does the blurring of boundaries between public and private mean for our knowledge and experiences of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and disability? - How are ICT mediated spaces created and maintained at home, work and those spaces in between? For example, how are 'geek gamers' finding spaces to play now the only console in the house can be in the living room? - How are ICT policies shaping public and private spaces throughout societies around the world? - What privacy issues are presented by media convergence? - What role are mobile and ubiquitous computing technologies playing in public and private spaces? - How is the increased commodification of social media affecting our privacy? Following from the first workshop we continue to see this workshop having three purposes. First, we seek to give voice and structure to existing new media, ICT and technology related research which may not readily sit within conventionally accepted areas. Second, we wish to draw in research on new forms of digital technology, ICT, computing, organizing and social interactions. Third, we want to continue discussions regarding potential futures for ICT related research which combine research as related to the evolving forms and functions of work organizations and the changing boundaries and relations between these organizations and their social milieus. We seek abstracts (of up to 600 words) that focus upon some aspect of digital culture. We hope to have a special issue of a journal associated with the workshop as was the case last year (a special issue of the Journal of Information, Communication, Ethics and Society was published early in 2009 - Vol 7, Issue 1). It is not meant to be a comprehensive list (others exist on the web for that), rather it is a list that covers conferences at the intersection of communities and technologies (particularly those with a design focus). I'd be happy to add others if people have specific suggestions that fit with the broader vision of our Center (see the main page of the CASCI website for a description). Hi Mike one useful ref may be Gee (2005): Gee, J. (2005) Semiotic social spaces and affinity spaces. In D. Barton and K. Tusting (eds) Beyond Communities of Practice. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press James Gee argues in this chapter that the popular notion of ‘communities of practice‘ (Wenger, see also Lloyd 2007) is of little use to understand increasingly common forms of sociality that do not entail group membership or a sense of belonging, e.g. real-time strategy computer games. Instead of communities of practice he proposes the notion of ‘affinity spaces’. These are spaces in which people from a variety of backgrounds come together to pursue a common endeavour or goal. Gee’s epitome of an affinity space is the strategy game Age of Mythology (AoM), a plural world in which the common endeavour of playing and transforming the game takes precedence over questions of racial, class or gender identity; a world with various routes to participation, informal leadership and status in which newbies and masters share the same space, and different kinds of knowledge (tacit, intensive, extensive, etc) are fostered and valued. The author suggests that educationalists have much to learn from affinity spaces such as AoM. Thus most school classrooms appear to be hierarchical, lack a common endeavour or opportunities for participation, value one or two hegemonic forms of knowledge, and so on. Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of the Local and Program Chairs, and the CATaC Executive Committee, I'm very pleased to pass on to you the first CFP for CATaC (Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication) '10: diffusion 2.0: computing, mobility, and the next generations. Venue: University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Dates: 15-18 June, 2010. The CATaC conference series provides a premier international forum for current research on how diverse cultural attitudes shape the implementation and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The conference series brings together scholars from around the globe who provide diverse perspectives, both in terms of the specific culture(s) they highlight in their presentations and discussions, and in terms of the discipline(s) through which they approach the conference theme. Original full papers (especially those which connect theoretical frameworks with specific examples of cultural values and practices) and short papers (e.g. describing current research projects and preliminary results) are invited. She simply goes online to a social networking site geared toward studying, such as StudyBlue or Flashcard Exchange."It's at your convenience. It's on your own time. You don't have to coordinate with anyone else's schedules," said Egerton, 19, of Iowa City. "It's just a smarter way to study." Online social networking, made popular across the country and around the globe in recent years by sites such as MySpace and Facebook, is no longer the exclusive territory of teenage romances and family pictures. "You name it, and it seems as though a niche network has been created, and if it hasn't, it will be in the very near future," said Gerry McKiernan, an ISU librarian who blogs and lectures nationally on the subject. [snip] McKiernan called use of the sites a shift away from the "sage on the stage." "The students themselves are creating a learning community," he said. "In a very real sense, I believe they're reinventing the educational process."More students and faculty in Iowa are using such sites. For example, today there are about 40,000 members of ISU's Facebook group, nearly double the 22,000 members three years ago. And more of them are using such sites as tools for learning, as evidenced by the recent success of StudyBlue.com.
