As part of this initiative, the CSC is pleased to announce a new Postdoctoral Fellowship program beginning May 15, 2009. Postdoctoral Fellowship Three postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded for the 2009-10 year with appointments beginning May 15, 2009. Appointments are for full time employment (40 hours per week) for one academic year, and are renewable for an additional academic year given satisfactory performance. A third year of continuation is possible, contingent on additional funding by the sponsor. Salary is $60,000 and the University offers subsidized health insurance. Support for travel to conferences will be available. Fellows are responsible for relocation and housing expenses. Fellows will support a research project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research involving the collection and assessment of narratives circulating in contested populations of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and/or Southern Europe/Northern Africa. Eligibility Applicants must have an earned or pending doctoral degree in Communication, Film/Media Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Languages, Religious Studies, or a related field/discipline. The degree must have been earned no earlier than 2005. Candidates with pending degrees who will have successfully defended their dissertations by May 1, 2009 will also be considered. Applicants must have no more than two years of formal postdoctoral experience. In addition, applicants must have critical language expertise and cultural knowledge of one or more of the three regions listed above. Relevant expertise in one or more of the subjects of strategic communication, counter-terrorism, ideology, narrative analysis, media analysis, transmediation, and/or computational modeling is desirable. Call for Papers Community Engagement for Sustainable Urban Futures Special issue of Futures http://www.elsevier.com/locate/futures Submissions close 31 July 2009 Theme This special issue of the multidisciplinary journal Futures is concerned with community engagement strategies that help to inform medium and long-term futures studies to foster sustainable cities and related urban, suburban and periurban environments. Within the nexus of people, place and technology, the issue invites research papers that report on methods and practices of futures studies investigating possible and alternative futures of urban communities, cultures and societies; urban informatics, infrastructure and computing technology; and the implications on a scale between local and global contexts. Hi Jacqueline I'm researching a very similar area (football SNS) so would be fascinated to see what you find too. I haven't come across anything specifically with sports fandom and use of the internet regarding social media. Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2009 DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 15 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center has extended the deadline on its annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch’s theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Lori Kendall, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Annette Markham, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Dr. Dennis Waskul, Minnesota State University, Mankato Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2009 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $500 US, runner up will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US, and a third paper will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $100 US. All three authors will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 7-11, 2009 in Milwaukee.
