VLT 66 CFP “New Media in the Majority World” New media technologies are rapidly transforming cultures and media products throughout the “majority world”. This term, advocated by Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam, describes “developing” countries in a way that underscores a central paradox; while decision-making power largely falls to “Group of Eight” countries, those outside this power structure comprise the bulk of the world’s population. Nations, regions and communities in the majority world, including India, China, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa all engage with locally-specific, yet globally-inflected forms of production, exhibition, distribution, and reception that chart new courses for new media technologies and suggest the possible rise of “majority media.” This issue of The Velvet Light Trap will examine the majority world in light of changes brought about by digital communications technologies, including digital production software, Internet media, DVD, digital video, satellite television, and mobile phones. Majority world cultures are being reshaped through new opportunities for media production, distribution and consumption. Examples include: the creation of a new Arab public sphere through web-based media, SMS-centered activism in Uganda, the use of digital video in Iranian cinema, the Nigerian trade in Bollywood videos, the global circulation of the telenovela bolstered by satellite television, and the use of cell phone footage in Middle Eastern documentary. This issue will privilege studies that investigate, through primary research and concrete analysis, how the production, content, and reception of non-Western film, television, and digital media have been affected by the rise of new media technologies. While this issue focuses on the changes brought about by global interactions and new technologies, essays that argue for continuities from older media and contexts in the face of such changes are also welcome. Ultimately, this issue will prioritize those submissions that attempt to sketch out the industrial and cultural forces behind these mediascapes despite their at times radically politicized contexts. Beyond the subjects suggested above, possible topics addressing new media in the majority world (especially in the Middle East, India, China, Africa and Latin America) include, but are not limited to: -how institutional contexts (i.e. ones influenced by particular legislation, policies, or flows of capital) have facilitated the use of new media -locally based reception studies that investigate how the majority world interacts with new media -aesthetic choices confronting majority world filmmakers using digital technology -the role of new media in shaping or re-invigorating locally specific narrative content -how new media is affecting media distribution and/or marketing in the majority world -locally based studies of the economics of new media in the majority world -locally based studies of majority world news media -how new media technologies are being integrated into established production practices and/or how they are paving the way for new ones -the role of new media practices in globalizing local media forms and production Papers should be between 6,000 and 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), in MLA style with a cover page including the writer’s name and contact information. This prompts a question aside from this disastrous case: What IRB obligations does one have if one's research is not funded by an institution and one makes no claims of affiliation or support for that research? (Obviously, not the case in this instance.) It could still be bad research/ethics, but I believe the IRB was originally intended to apply to Federally funded research, now typically applies to all (non-humanities/journalistic) research at a Federally funded institution, but does it touch upon even loose affiliations?

A case study of what not to do when trying to research Internet-based phenomena/groups? For those of you not on LiveJournal academics_anon, here's the summary, quoted from the community post: "A researcher affiliated with Boston University named Ogi Ogas decided to do a survey of various LiveJournal fanfiction/fandom groups. Unfortunately: 1. Despite repeatedly mentioning his association with BU, it appears he never got IRB approval. 2. This research wasn't even for a project at BU; it was for a privately published book. (A book titled, incidentally, Rule 34: What Netporn Teaches Us About The Brain. I am not making this up.) 3. Because of the subject, the survey was quite explicit in some parts (and flat-out triggering in others). Yet it was posted to all-ages communities with nothing even resembling a warning. 4. After criticism of a number of the questions (on counts ranging from cisgender and heterosexual privilege to just plain squick), the researcher actually changed the survey while data was still actively being collected. 5. Edited to add: Oh yeah, and some of the questions had to do with illegal drugs and sexual activity, despite there being no privacy statement or anything else of the sort." Qualitative Data Analysis Software Recommendations

I'm evaluating various qualitative data analysis (QDA) software programs for a project that involves web-based artifacts, and I'm hoping that the collective wisdom on this list will help me find the right program for the task at hand. My data set includes several hundred discussion threads from an online forum, and I would like to save these threads in a web-native format (e.g., .html, .mht, .webarchive) rather than "print" them to .pdf or .rtf format. When I open the artifacts in the QDA software, I would like to see a web page, not Adobe's or Microsoft's mangled output. Unfortunately, very few QDS programs are able to import HTML files. I've tested trial versions of Atlas.ti, NVivo, MAXQDA, Qualrus, QDA Miner, and HyperRESEARCH, but only Qualrus seems to be able to open web-native files. Has anyone out there had success with Qualrus? Its coding and crunching capabilities don't seem very robust compared to Atlas.ti and NVivo, but my first impression may not be correct. Alternately, are there other QDA programs I should consider that can handle HTML files? I'm on a Mac, but all of the programs I've mentioned (other than HyperRESEARCH) are Windows-only, so I've been running the trial versions using VirtualBox. Suggestions for either platform are welcome. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. Thanks to these technologies, collaborative communities are today one of the emerging trends in the ICT area. Notable examples of collaborative communities are those in online social networks, where users are able to establish relationships with other users, possibly of different types and for purposes that may concern business, entertainment, religion, dating, etc, and also they are able to enforce information sharing based on these relationships. As such, social networks represent a natural place for collaborative communities. Collaborative tools based on the social networking paradigm, i.e., collaborative social network, are today more and more used not only by single users, but also at the enterprise level to communicate, share information, taking decisions, and doing business. This is in line with the emerging trend known as Enterprise 2.0 As such, the existence of collaborative social networks that can be used for various reasons creates both interesting opportunities and challenges. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers in various disciplines to explore the effect of social networks on collaborative applications. Our ultimate goal is to foster communication and collaboration across disciplines to enable interdisciplinary approaches for collaborative social networks.
