HCSNet is offering a workshop that brings together people from different disciplines interested in Natural User Interfaces (NUI). This workshop will discuss the role NUI can play, themes of interest as well as future work that NUI enables. Do gestures completely replace typical mouse pointers or simply augment it for some functionality? Do all applications work with gestures or only a select few? The goal of this workshop is to make a first step in identifying challenges and characterising NUI design obstacles. Possible themes of interest include: * Multimodal interfaces * Robust spoken-language interaction * Intelligent user interfaces * Social interaction strategies * Gesture and embodied interaction * Conversational agents * Task and activity modelling * Environment-specific issues * Tangible and mobile devices We are pleased to announce a keynote presentation by Daniel Wigdor. Daniel is the User Experience Architect on the Microsoft Surface project, where he leads a team developing fundamentals of touch and gestural interaction. Before joining Microsoft, he conducted research in advanced user interfaces and devices at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, at the Initiative in Innovative Computing at Harvard University, and at the University of Toronto where he completed an MSc and a PhD in computer science, specializing in multi-surface direct-touch environments. Learn more about Daniel Wigdor. Our second international speaker is Jamie Zigelbaum. Jamie is now working at Oblong Industries in Los Angeles. He was a PhD student in the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab where he built and studied next generation computer interfaces. He specializes in gestural and tangible interfaces and works to create new interactions between humans and machines that enable the full use of our evolutionarily developed skills, expressive capabilities, and nuanced social behaviors. Oblong Industries is the developer of the g-speak spatial operating environment. Find out more about Oblong Industries. This workshop examines the NUI field as a base for future work within a multidisciplinary environment. The hope of this workshop is to develop a series of themes and design practices which have the potential to act as a base for future collaboration. We encourage those interested to participate in this workshop. Dear Alexander, Caroline, and others, I have a paper that runs through these definitions and argues that (some type of) online communities should be defined by common interest. You, Alexander, may want to shoot at it for your purpose: Matzat, U. (2004). "Cooperation and Community on the Internet: Past Issues and Present Perspectives for theoretical-empirical Internet Research" in: Analyse & Kritik, 26, 1: 63-90. (pre-print at my website) To be honest, I can't follow your argument. Maybe this is just a misunderstanding? But why does this type of definition imply a high degree of homophily? If you look at a "classical" online community, for instance a discussion fora about cancer, then there is a common interest (discussion about cancer). But there does not have to be a high degree of homophily. Members can have different educational, ethnic, and social backgrounds. Could you clarify? --------> So, my arguement is that community should be defined by interaction, not by some declarative features like interests, profiles, communities, etc. --------> I agree that for some other types of online communities ("social online communities") other criteria should be taken into account as well. Call For Submissions: The Mobile Media Reader Editors: Noah Arceneaux (San Diego State University) and Anandam Kavoori (University of Georgia) Peter Lang Publishing We are currently seeking contributions for The Mobile Media Reader, an anthology to be published by Peter Lang in 2012. This project began as an update of The Cell Phone Reader, a 2006 anthology of critical studies of various aspects of mobile communication. Given the dramatic and ongoing technological changes associated with mobile devices, we have now decided to compile an entirely new set of essays. The hype and hyperbole associated with mobile media recall the utopian hopes described by Carey and Quirk in their classic essay “The Mythos of the Electronic Revolution.” Portable, hand-held devices, originally designed for voice communication, are now promoted as the latest technological device necessary to live a complete, 21st century, middle-class life. Meanwhile, all of the established media industries, including television, film, music, and print, seek to reach consumers through mobile devices, altering their products and economic models in order to do so. In light of these developments, this anthology seeks historical studies and culturally informed critiques of different forms of mobile media. We are especially interested in essays that reveal earlier precedents for this current phenomenon, or works that reveal how business models and theories developed in the past should be re-evaluated for mobile audiences. Georgetown University Language, Technology and Politics The Communication, Culture & Technology (CCT) M.A. program at Georgetown University focuses on the relationship between new computational technologies of communication and areas such as science, scholarship, culture, government, media, business, journalism and the arts. The program seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor working on the relationship between language and technologies of communication and associated political issues. Candidates whose research emphasizes technology, internet linguistics, language and politics, intercultural communication, or language and sex/gender, race, class or national identity will be given priority. They should be current in the history, theory, and methodologies of their field. Forming a new program in ICT - recommendations?

Hello -- I've been following the discussion of where a PhD should study with great interest. I have a somewhat related question and am very interested in your opinions and advice: I am on a committee that has been given the charge to "discern the intellectually coherent mission (or missions) that will enable distinctive research, scholarly, and creative contributions in ICT" on our campus. ("Distinctive" here means of excellent academic quality, as in "of distinction".) Our recommendations are to be high level -- i.e., what is the model or general structure our campus should implement? (e.g., we should recommend whether the unit should give graduate or undergraduate degrees, but we don't have to plan out the curriculum). We have no constraints on what direction to go...we could recommend a college, department, school, program, support unit, research institute, center, etc. Our committee is very interdisciplinary (engineers, social scientists, humanists, natural scientists, business professors, artists). We are soliciting input from stakeholders across campus, through several small meetings and also public forums. We are also trying to learn from our peers, gathering models of what other universities are doing. And we are talking to industry representatives. The University of Colorado-Boulder is a state university, with approximately 30,000 students. We are a comprehensive Research I/AAU school. In this changing milieu, organizations and individuals must continually acquire new knowledge and abilities or be left behind. Influential entities such as the United Nations strongly advocate the pursuit of lifelong learning for individuals, while leading companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations seek to become what scholars such as Peter Senge have called “learning organizations” that can transform themselves through the learning of their members at all levels. Training, or the structured development of skills, competencies, and up-to-date knowledge, is an increasingly important element in these pursuits. The shape of training may vary—formal or informal, face-to-face or technologically mediated, short-term or long-term—but the end purpose is always the same: to facilitate learning by individuals or groups, usually with the larger purpose of enhancing organizational quality. Training is vital to the success of globally connected organizations and individuals, but success requires the trainers’ effective bridging of linguistic, cultural, and social distances. Only teams and individuals with facility in navigating diverse languages, cultures, technologies, educational practices, and rhetorical traditions will be able to successfully provide training to global audiences. Professional communicators, whose discipline claims expertise in several areas relevant to training—including oral, written, and visual rhetoric, usability, information architecture, electronic collaboration, intercultural communication, and collaboration with translators—are well positioned to contribute to global training efforts or take on the role of trainers themselves. Yet, despite these advantages, the pool of research on training in global audiences is limited, especially within the field of professional communication. This special issue of the /Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication, and Globalization/ seeks to address this need by providing a space for scholarly research and best practices on the topic of global, organizational training. The issue, entitled *Navigating the Global Training Terrain: New Literacies, Competencies, and Practices *will focus on training in global contexts from the perspective of both those who train and those who learn, including current research and best practices. The special issue will also cast an eye toward organizational training as it is evolving towards the future. The editors of the special issue welcome submissions from a variety of perspectives including business, science, humanitarian practice, health, social advocacy, education, and government. Possible topics pertaining to the theory, teaching, and practice of training in global contexts include the following, among others: · Intercultural considerations in the design and delivery of training · Training and the social web · Cultural intelligence for trainers and training audiences · Language use and translation in training contexts · Meta-communication and training · Communities of practice · Legal issues in global training · Economic aspects of global training · Assessment of global training · Training from a distance Proposals (up to 500 words) for research papers, short best practices pieces*, and tutorials are due by October 10^th , 2010. Best practices describe the training strategies, approaches, or methods that work in a particular situation or environment. What has worked and why? What has not worked so well, and what could work better? Authors may use the following optional framework for best practices pieces: title, description, methods used, results, technologies used, and lessons learned. While the proposal and review process is the same for research papers, tutorials, and best practices pieces, final manuscripts for best practices should be shorter: approximately 1000 to 3000 words in length. *Production Schedule *The schedule for the special issue is as follows: 10 October 2010 -- 500-word proposals due 15 October 2010 – Guest editors return proposal decisions to submitters 10 January 2011 – Draft manuscripts of accepted proposals due 1 July 2011 -- Final manuscripts due September 2011 -- Publication date of special issue *About the Journal *The /Journal of Rhetoric, Professional Communication and Globalization/ publishes articles on the theory, practice, and teaching of technical and professional communication in critical global and intercultural contexts such as business, manufacturing, environment, information technology, and others. As a global initiative, the Journal welcomes manuscripts with diverse approaches and contexts of research, but manuscripts are to be submitted in English and grounded in relevant theory and appropriate research methods. The Journal is peer reviewed with an editorial board consisting of experienced researchers and practitioners from over 20 countries. ** The Journal is free or “open access,” using PKP open source software and housed at East Carolina University.
