As with many aspects of our culture, especially media-related ones, Marshall McLuhan had some notable things to say that are relevant to the Wikileaks controversy: "Position papers are secret or confidential documents for the attention of committees, and any office boy can publish these, no matter how top secret they may be. The Pentagon Papers were position papers which may or may not have been studied or discussed by a Congressional committee. They are "the news behind the news", which used to be considered muckraking but has now become an ordinary dimension of journalism, such as nourishes the underground press and which, in turn, affects the forms and publics of the regular press." CALL FOR PARTICIPATION CHI 2011 workshop: ”Privacy for a Networked World”: Bridging Theory and Design http://networkedprivacy.wordpress.com/ As our lives are more commonly mediated by information technology, an interactional perspective to how people find and construct privacy in socio-technical interactions has proven effective as a starting point for theoretical and empirical studies of privacy in everyday life in which online interactions have a significant role. Yet, there remain important open questions regarding how to translate results based on this perspective into design practice. Addressing these questions requires a greater sensitivity to when interactional privacy is applicable, a better understanding of suitable research methods, and more effective means for communicating results to the researcher and practitioner communities. The goal of this workshop is to bring privacy theory and design together. We seek participants from various domains for a multidisciplinary workshop to share their knowledge and views of both the theory and design of interactional privacy. Position papers are invited on the following topics: (1) Theoretical and empirical study of interactional privacy. (2) Ways of designing for interactional privacy. Submitted position papers will be peer-reviewed by a workshop committee. The organizers will disseminate the results at the CHI conference and plan to submit a proposal for a special issue in a relevant journal in response to an open Call for Papers. Interested parties should submit a position paper of 2-4 pages, in the CHI Extended Abstracts format, to the EasyChair submission central at http://tinyurl.com/networkedprivacy by Jan 14, 2011. Teaching about multiplatform communication

I'm thinking about creating a course on multiplatform communicating, or the rhetoric of the interface. The goal would be to help students understand how the way you engage with the media technology impacts your understanding of the information being communicated, and what it says about who the intended users are. The idea would be for them to develop multiplatform communication projects, so understanding the role of the interface in content creation and dissemination. So it could draw in literature from various fields: psychology of perception, film studies, HCI, social informatics, etc. If anyone has any ideas for good literature, then I would be glad to hear it. This year’s theme is “Cities, Creativity, Connectivity”. We call for general academic papers in Communication and Media Studies as well as papers addressing the concrete conference theme. The ESN is a section dedicated to the work and careers of emerging scholars in the field of media and communication. Hence, we especially look for works in progress from graduate students and new university instructors/professors who are interested in substantial feedback and comments intended to advance their projects. The ESN organizes emerging scholar panels and joint panels with other sections. Our emerging scholar panels provide a comfortable environment for the presentation of theses and works in progress, where emerging scholars can receive feedback from colleagues also at the beginning of their careers and from senior scholars who act as respondents to individual papers. The joint panels with other sections allow for the exchange of ideas with senior scholars in the field and networking. The Conference The conference is a three-day event, comprising the presentation of papers, keynote speeches and panel discussions. The conference will discuss a broad range of issues all concerning the interactions between research and study in the humanities and so-called web-based knowledge. We are seeking speakers who are interested in the production of knowledge and how this production has been affected by the development of the internet. Specifically, the areas we wish to explore involve e-text copyrights, new web-based learning techniques and pod-casting. In examining these subjects, however, our focus is not solely on what is new in the sense of technological developments, but how the new renovates the old. Therefore, another focus of the conference is on the history of knowledge as an idea that can be disseminated by way of such early media as the book, the class room and the library. We encourage anyone who is interested in this conference to submit a proposal for a paper or a panel. Participants can be from the ‘traditional' humanities, those with ‘hands-on' experiences of digitization of text or images, people involved in the maintenance of databases, IT studies experts, or private software developers. The conference language is English. The conference committee welcomes contributions on the following example topics: 1.Hands-on digitization of ancient manuscripts and other similar documents. 2.Web-based based edited works (e.g. Shakespeare, Goethe, Balzac or national treasures of smaller language areas). 3.The legal aspects of producing and consuming web-based texts and images. 4.The history of knowledge as it has transitioned from what we might term ‘book-based' platforms to web-based platforms. 5.Innovations in web-design and the establishment of databases. 6.The study of the humanities in the age of Google: how have the cultural aspects of the university changed and how have these changes transformed the older notions of studying the humanities. 7.The immateriality of the text: how has the transition to web-based reading altered our understanding of book history and interpretation of text and tradition? Traditional and Digital Format In the spirit of the conference's aim, we seek to combine the traditional elements of an academic conference and those elements of video conference and ‘streaming'. This allows participants to choose between whether they wish to physically attend the conference at the University of Copenhagen or merely wish to attend online. Should a participant opts to participant online, as the support structures for the conference develop over the next couple of months, materials will be available on line so that this participant can attend over the net. It is our hope that this will enable participants from developing countries, as well as milieus in which travel budgets may be low, to enhance our discussion with their insights. Paper Submission Authors are invited to submit abstracts of approx. 300-500 words of their suggested papers. The abstract must give a clear indication of the contents and key points of the coming paper. All submissions will be handled electronically. Panel Submission We also invite suggestion for panels that examine innovative, controversial, or otherwise interesting issues. Many thanks in advance, Anne *CALL FOR PHD APPLICATIONS* The Design Research Innovation Lab at Victoria University of Wellington's (NZ) School of Design is pleased to announce we are currently accepting applications for students interested in pursuing a PhD in Design. The application deadline is 1 March 2011. *Call for Candidates* Victoria University of Wellington's Design Research Innovation Lab invites applications for PhD candidates. Prospective candidates with exceptional creative and analytical skills seeking to study design from philosophical, cultural and practice-led perspectives are encouraged to apply. Potential candidates will be expected to make a substantial contribution to design knowledge, extending current understanding within the discipline and discourse of design research. The DRIL PhD programme emphasises the advancement of interdisciplinary knowledge and supports practice-led research through its emphasis on creativity as a process of investigation, culminating in an original design composition and a substantial written exegesis critically analysing the methodology, process, and documentation of the final creative composition. The program has three areas of concentration: Digital Media, Culture+Context and Industrial Design.
