Thanks, Aaron. -----Original Message----- Call for Papers and Participation: HCSNet Workshop on Natural User Interfaces: Multitouch and Gestural Interactions What is the next major evolution in user interaction? HCSNet is offering a workshop that brings together people from different disciplines interested in Natural User Interfaces (NUI). This workshop will discuss the role NUI can play, themes of interest as well as future work that NUI enables. Do gestures completely replace typical mouse pointers or simply augment it for some functionality? Do all applications work with gestures or only a select few? The goal of this workshop is to make a first step in identifying challenges and characterising NUI design obstacles. Possible themes of interest include: * Multimodal interfaces * Robust spoken-language interaction * Intelligent user interfaces * Social interaction strategies * Gesture and embodied interaction * Conversational agents * Task and activity modelling * Environment-specific issues * Tangible and mobile devices We are pleased to announce a keynote presentation by Daniel Wigdor. Daniel is the User Experience Architect on the Microsoft Surface project, where he leads a team developing fundamentals of touch and gestural interaction. Before joining Microsoft, he conducted research in advanced user interfaces and devices at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, at the Initiative in Innovative Computing at Harvard University, and at the University of Toronto where he completed an MSc and a PhD in computer science, specializing in multi-surface direct-touch environments. Learn more about Daniel Wigdor. Our second international speaker is Jamie Zigelbaum. Jamie is now working at Oblong Industries in Los Angeles. He was a PhD student in the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab where he built and studied next generation computer interfaces. He specializes in gestural and tangible interfaces and works to create new interactions between humans and machines that enable the full use of our evolutionarily developed skills, expressive capabilities, and nuanced social behaviors. Oblong Industries is the developer of the g-speak spatial operating environment. Find out more about Oblong Industries. This workshop examines the NUI field as a base for future work within a multidisciplinary environment. The hope of this workshop is to develop a series of themes and design practices which have the potential to act as a base for future collaboration. We encourage those interested to participate in this workshop. Participants are required submit a short abstract discussing their thoughts on this field, and how it can fit within their existing work. HCSNet will fund a number of travel grants of up to $500 to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Melbourne area. Ranking Web of Universities: July 2009 edition

The July edition of the Ranking Web of World Universities (http://www.webometrics.info) shows important news. Most of them are due to changes done to improve the academic impact of the open web contents and to reduce the geographical bias of search engines. As a result, the US universities still lead the Ranking (MIT with its huge Open Courseware is again the first, followed by Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley), but the digital gap with their European counterparts (Cambridge and Oxford are in the region’s top) has been reduced. Even more important, some of the developing countries institutions reach high ranks, especially in Latin America where the University of Sao Paulo (38th) and UNAM (44th) benefits from the increasingly interconnected Brazilian and Mexican academic webspaces. Several countries improves their performance including Taiwan and Saudi Arabia with strong web oriented strategies, Czech Republic (Charles), the leader for Eastern Europe, Spain (Complutense) and Portugal (Minho, Porto) with huge repositories and strong Open Access initiatives. Norway (NTNU, Oslo), Egypt could be also mentioned. On the other side, the underrated are headed by France, with a very fragmented system, Korea, whose student-oriented websites are frequently duplicated, New Zealand, India or Argentina. Africa is still monopolized by South African universities (Cape Town is the first, 405th), as well as Australian Universities are the best ranked for Oceania (Australian National University, 77th) Other well performing institutions include Cornell or Caltech in the USA, Tokyo (24th) Toronto (28th), Hong Kong (91st), or Peking (104th). On the contrary, in positions below expected we find Yale, Princeton, Saint Petersburg, Seoul and the Indian Institutes of Science or Technology. (apologies for cross-posting) Call for Papers 2nd International Workshop on Quality in Techno-Social Systems at the Fourth IEEE International Conference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems SASO 2010 - September 28, 2010, Budapest, Hungary http://qlectives.eu/qteso Techo-social systems are ICT systems in which many people collectively coordinate and cooperate to achieve their goals without central control. These systems, for example Wikipedia, eBay, Web2.0 sites, social networks and peer-to-peer networks, have both self-organizing and self-adaptive aspects. In this workshop we aim to put the quality aspect of these complex systems into focus. Quality outcome can be produced by the individual users through selecting, producing and rating certain kinds of content. For example, trust and reputation may emerge among a community and be used to enhance quality. The workshop will consider mechanisms by which individual peers can be brought together automatically into collectives whose members share interests and agree about the evaluation of quality in the domain. The SASO conference focuses on how to make computer systems operate autonomously in a reliable, efficient and useful way with minimal user or operator intervention. The workshop addresses this very problem narrowing the focus down to techno-social systems. The question we ask is: how can one let a system self-organize to a high quality, desirable state, where users and their behavior form an integral part of the system (i.e., a techno-social system), and where self-organization at the system level has to be aligned with self-organization at the social level. The workshop is centered around the following technical issues: * incentive mechanisms for self-organizing and self-adaptive systems * evolving social interaction structures for quality * ranking, rating, reputation and recommendation in distributed systems * conflict and consensus detection, correction in distributed systems * realistic models of user behaviour and the dynamic social structures that they create * analysis of empirical and experimental data for quality * computational sociology of online communities * distributed social networks * quality metrics - how to measure in distributed systems Papers are welcome from the fields of theoretical and algorithmic foundations, algorithm design and simulation, as well as empirical data-sets collection, processing and validation. Audience The workshop is inherently interdisciplinary. Relevant areas include: sociology and psychology,in particular, the evolution of cooperation, opinion dynamics, the evolution of norms and trust relationships, etc; physics, in particular complex (social and technical) networks and models of the dynamics of group behavior; computer science, in particular P2P systems, data mining (ranking and recommendation), information retrieval, and distributed systems. Paper Submission Authors are invited to submit original unpublished papers that are neither accepted nor submitted elsewhere. All submissions will be carefully peer reviewed by the program committee. Inclusion in Proceedings The proceedings of all SASO workshops will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press as a bundle with the main conference proceedings, and made available as a part of the IEEE digital library. CFP REMINDER: DEADLINE 1st JUNE ----------------------------------------------------------- Digital Methods, Cultural Politics and Feminist Approaches: A One - Day Graduate Conference ----------------------------------------------------------- Monday 5 July 2010 University of Sussex, Media Film and Music & Doctoral School Centre for Digital Material Culture Research in the humanities and social sciences has increasingly incorporated visual media and digital methodologies. At the same time, relatively little attention has been accorded to the way in which feminist approaches to science and technology have informed the research process by contributing to discussions of private and public, materiality, network cultures and identity. This one-day conference aims to examine the emerging field in the intersection of digital methods, cultural politics and feminist theory. The conference hopes to bring together Doctoral students as well as early career researchers working in media and cultural studies, gender studies, digital media, feminist science and technology studies, and queer studies. Themes of discussion might include: -Digital methods and visual media in the research of political engagement. -Feminist approaches to researching science, culture and technology. -Internet research ethics, feminist ethics and research. -The concepts of public and private. -Epistemological and ontological issues in STS and material feminisms. -Actor Network Theory, media studies and Feminism. -Notions of difference and identity in digital networks. -Information flows and the problem of representation. -Gender, biological and information technologies. -Science, technology and social change.
