Call for Papers for Special Issue of CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editors: Daniel Martin Varisco & Vit Sisler Call Description Today we witness an unprecedented proliferation of the internet and satellite television as well as growing interdependency of various media outlets in the Middle East and the Muslim world. This process includes media that morph into each other, messages that migrate across boundaries, and social networks that utilize multiple technologies. The unanticipated assemblages formed by these media contribute simultaneously to preserving traditional cultural norms and religious values while asserting cosmopolitan and global identity; appealing to a local audience while addressing transnational communities; and asserting conformity with existing political order while fueling resistance and public discontent. Therefore, this special issue of CyberOrient aims to transcend the media-centric logic and to analyze the impact of the internet and new media in the light of the interdependency and hybridization within broader social, cultural and linguistic context of the Middle East and the Muslim world. Aims and Scope The special issue of CyberOrient aims to bring together the state of the art research dealing with the growing influence of the internet and new media in the Middle East. Key questions include: - What opportunities for representation have the internet and new media created in the Middle East, and how has it influenced popular culture, language and norms? - Does the proliferation of sites by individuals from various cultural backgrounds democratize political and religious behavior in the Middle East? - What does the internet and the social networks it enables offer to groups who have not traditionally had access to an open public domain for expression, especially women and marginalized sects? - Does the wide range of views posted on the internet foster tolerance and greater understanding on current issues of political and religious strife? - What is the impact of the virtual Islamic community on the practices of Muslims worldwide? - How does access to internet cafes and global connections influence cultural norms in Middle Eastern societies? - What role do new media such as video games and video clips play in the identity construction of Middle Eastern and Muslim youth? This may be of interest: Special Issue Cultural Science (http://cultural-science.org/journal/) Internet Research Methods as Moments of Evolution Editor: Thomas Petzold, ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia Call for Papers This special issue of Cultural Science explores Internet research methods at the intersection of socio-cultural and evolutionary research. It invites contributions that combine innovative research design on the Internet with an evolutionary treatment of socio-cultural change to reconsider the dynamics of institutions, identities, and socio-cultural relations. By doing so this special issue seeks to identify and further develop discussions of specific methods as well as wider considerations of underlying propositions that deal with evolutionary approaches to culture. Methods as moments of evolution relates to phenomena Internet researchers seek to unravel by using specific approaches and techniques as well as to the more general idea that Internet research methods must be understood as part of an evolutionary process of scientific working and thinking. For this special issue, contributions are welcome that take methods and concepts from disciplines previously unrelated or but marginally related to cultural research and the humanities and apply, adapt and adjust these to Internet related research into structural and dynamic changes. Such an approach, it is expected, shares methods with other emerging disciplines and fields such as computational social sciences (Lazer et al 2009), digital humanities (Schreibman, Siemens and Unsworth 2004), and web science (Berners-Lee, Hall, and Hendler 2006). This special issue welcomes case studies as well as broader methodological analyses of: * Internet research methods and instruments exploring evolutionary processes of Internet related issues in general, * the dynamics and structural change of culture and language on the Internet in particular, * the challenges and limits of both visualising large data sets and/or small nuances of micro-case studies, and asks * what it means for Internet researchers to consider methods as moments of evolution. Greetings, I'm looking for a couple of citations, and would appreciate the list's assistance in pointing me to the information. First, I am looking for a peer reviewed work that discusses bloggers - or other online writers - appropriation of others work and posting it without noting that the work is not original...or else explicitly stating the work is their own. Education/classroom citations won't help in this case. What I need is something that discusses the activity, and if possible the prevalence of the activity in social setting(s). Second, I'm looking for a citation, if there are any, that discusses a blogger - or other online writer's - reposting of their work across multiple sites. Again, peer reviewed would be best. The workshop will take place in Denver, Colorado on 4 November 2010, immediately after the main AMTA 2010 conference. Premise: Recent years have seen a revolution in MT triggered by the emergence of statistical approaches to MT and improvements in translation quality. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free on the Web and is making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of translators are post-editing TM/MT output. At the same time, there has been some disconnect between academic research on MT, which (rightly so) focuses on algorithms to increase translation quality, and many of the practical issues that need to be addressed to make MT maximally useful in real translation and localisation scenarios. Objectives: This workshop will bring together MT researchers, developers, industrial users and translators to discuss issues that are most important in real world industrial settings involving MT, but currently not very popular in research circles. Workshop Chairs: Ventsislav Zhechev Philipp Koehn Josef van Genabith Call for Research Papers: For this workshop we solicit full research papers with industry or academic background to highlight the real-world issues that need to be tackled by new research and the recent academic advancements that improve translation quality, as well as novel and successful methods for the integration of Machine Translation with Translation Memories or Localisation Workflows. We will accept research paper submissions (reviewed anonymously) for oral presentation and publication. We seek a humanities-trained Ph.D. whose primary area of research expertise and training is in digital media studies focused specifically on the social dimensions and potentials of digital media. This applicant will be expected to interact productively with colleagues in one or more of the department’s three areas: Rhetoric and Public Culture; Film and Media Studies; and Performance and Ethnographic Studies. The applicant must have a well-developed research program and teaching experience in digital and social media. Open/user innovation for eco-friendly (product) development – cases or studies?

Dear Air-L'ers, I am curious about ‘green’ innovations emerging or improving through online communications. Has anyone of you recently come across studies or cases on the impact of - online community interaction - online user-producer interaction on the development of greener / eco-friendlier / sustainable products; the improvement of sustainability in the production or utilization of products; or the development of innovative "green" processes or materials? Due to my interest in both research lines, the impacts of virtualization on innovation processes as well as sustainability of products and production processes, I am wondering whether there is certain potential of online-interaction for sustainability focused developments / innovations. I am currently looking for (more or less) successful examples. So far I mainly found firm-initiated idea contests or the like, but could not find much about reciprocal interaction between users or between users and producers. If any of you have seen any cases, articles or papers, I would be delighted to hear from you. I would also appreciate your general thoughts on the topic. Thanks a lot in advance!
