Hello everyone! I'm the history project manager for the Cyber Conflict Studies Association (CCSA). We are working with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) to host a Cyber Conflict Case Studies Contest. Looking closely at incidents from Morris Worm to Titan Rain, we're hoping this contest will help develop the field of cyber conflict history. The contest has prizes of to $1000 for students, armed service members, and professionals. Submissions may also be chosen for publication in an upcoming CCSA history book. The location of the global IGF in Africa meant that for the first time ever over half of attendees were from the Africa region. The large number of participants from African countries meant that issues of importance to the global south pertaining to all the themes in the IGF agenda had greater prominence than in previous events. The high incidence of African panelists brought new perspectives to a discussion that had lacked immediacy in previous IGFs. The main theme of the IGF was Internet as a catalyst for change: Access, development, freedoms and innovation. APC strongly supported the focus on access, development and freedom, viewing all three as critical issues if the internet is to fulfill its potential to contribute to social justice and development. The Nairobi IGF demonstrated that this forum remains a creative and influential space for policy dialogue. Prior to the IGF, APC released a briefing paper outlining our priorities for the IGF2. In this report, we reflect on those priorities and on the Sixth Forum in general. We also renew our proposal to have human rights be the central theme for the next IGF. Call for Applications: Badges, Trophies, and Achievements: Recognition and Accreditation for Informal and Interest-Driven Learning Research: assessment, badging Grants: Research Grant, Doctoral Student Grants, Student Prize, Faculty Prize Deadline: Apply by *January 6, 2012* (application instructions: http://www.dmlcompetition.net/Competition/4/research-apply.php) Online networks, digital resources, and gaming environments provide rich opportunities for learning that is demand-driven and learner-centered. More and more people are turning to networked knowledge communities, online tutorials, and other digital resources for wide ranging learning needs. While learning is migrating to these more informal and non-institutionalized kinds of contexts, we still have little research that examines how people assess, recognize, and display the learning that happens in these settings. - What are the emerging techniques and practices for managing reputation and recognizing learning? - What are the broad historical and structural understandings of how accreditation operates in our changing social and cultural environment? - What systems exist for recognizing learning outside of formal degree and training programs? - How do credentials and other displays of achievement operate in the digital and networked world? - What kinds of skills and experiences have not been well captured by existing credentialing and recognition systems? - How is the landscape of credentialing changing (or not) with the shift to digital and networked society? We seek empirical and theoretical research focusing on these questions. Studies should focus on areas such as: - Ranking, badging, and achievement systems in games, clubs, competitions, and other forms of interest-driven activities. - Accreditation and certificates outside of formal degree programs, including areas such as work skills training, language, writing, and critical thinking capabilities, arts, crafts, and other trades. - The role of credentials, badges, and other recognitions of achievement in career and reputation development. - Empirical, theoretical, and critical studies of how companies, groups, institutions, and individuals produce, utilize, and exploit various credentialing and reputation systems. RESEARCH GRANT (1) Research funds to support the gathering and writing up of findings on novel and effective ways of assessing learning practices, especially learning facilitated by digital media. We are especially interested in work considering the role and effectiveness of badges and badging systems as instruments of assessment though competitive proposals will not be limited to this narrower focus. Awarded funds may be used for salary replacement, for travel in support of data collection, for modest graduate research assistance in support of the project (no more than one-third of final budget), or for modest technological support for the project. The grantee will also be responsible for organizing a workshop or a working group on the topic. In addition to the faculty support funding of the award ($60,000) there would be a budget of $20,000 available to support the workshop or working group. These funds may be used to support travel, accommodation and food expenses for workshop or working group participants but not for graduate student stipends or fees. The grantee is required to produce one publication, which could be a book, a MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Report, literature review, or white paper. Support for activities resulting in publication are to be included in the grant budget. Research award winners are expected to attend the Digital Media and Learning Symposium in San Francisco on February 29, 2012, followed by the Digital Media and Learning Conference on March 1-3, 2012 ( http://dml2012.dmlcentral.net/) as well as one of the Competition winners meetings, travel costs for which are to be included in the awarded budgets. Grantees are also required to set aside funds for the winners' event to be held in conjunction with the 2013 Digital Media and Learning Conference. I'm looking keywords and research on the formation of intentional networks in entrepreneurial and other business networks (through networking organizations, conferences, etc.): - Research on deliberately created networks (such as networking organizations) especially using social media methods - How the intentions affect the structure of a network (i.e., metrics like centrality, path length, etc.) (if at all) - Methods for using social media to measure (especially) newly created network ties (i.e., longitudinal studies of newly formed networks on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) Thank you so much! As video and computer games have increased in accessibility, influence, and cultural prominence, they have had a significant impact on many facets of society, culture, and our attitudes toward technology, including entertainment, industry, play, education, identity, community, and art. At the same time they have provoked both popular and academic debate and controversy over their perceived benefits and issues. In addressing these claims and concerns, video games have become an important focus of academic work as scholars seek to better understand their impact on the people who play them and on culture and society in general. We invite submissions to a special issue of the *Bulletin of Science, Technology, & Society* that further this body of work by critically engaging with video games and their implications. Video games are an ideal subject for interdisciplinary research and discussion, as they can be analysed using a variety of theoretical lenses and methodological approaches including those of social science, anthropology, technology history and technology studies, media, political economy, and the hard sciences. Therefore, this issue is open to critical perspectives on video games in culture and society from any discipline. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to: - the history and progression of video games - video game industries (software and/or hardware) - political economy and economics - theories of play - issues and benefits of video games - players, audiences, and reception - gaming cultures and communities - avatars, digital bodies, and identity - representations of age, race, and gender - video games in education - serious gaming Interested scholars should submit an abstract of up to 500 words for consideration.
