Available academic position (professor/associate professor), subject area: transmedia/crossmedia ABOUT US The Baltic Film and Media School (BFM) at Tallinn University (Estonia) is the only higher-education institution in northern Europe teaching film, television and media studies in English. BFM was founded in 2004 by the agreement between Baltic states and Nordic countries. Our faculty and over 400 students now hail from more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australia. We offer an exciting mix of nations, societies and cultures that eventually creates an invaluable professional network. Member of CILECT and ECREA, particiating in several EU funded R&D initiatives and having over 25 partner universities in Europe and China BFM is well connected in academic networks. Located in Tallinn, the European Capital of Culture 2011, it offers a great great gateway to Northern Europe and Russia. At the end of 2011 our new purpose built building will be completed and equipped with most up-to-date technologies and facilities for the production of all formats of screen media. ** ** ABOUT THE POST In Autumn 2011 BFM will launch a new "Cross-Media Production" MA programme (jointly with Tartu University's Institute of Journalism and Communication) and invites applications for the following academic position: *Professor/Associate Professor of Cross-Media* Full time position, contract for 3 years, salary and title dependent on background and qualifications. Effective Date of Appointment: August/September 2011. The successful candidate for professoral position has a background both in academic research and teaching, has a doctoral degree in either media studies, information science, ICTs, film studies, art theory, linguistics, semiotics or similar. Solid research background in these areas should be demonstrated by publications in renowned international journals. The candidates for the position of associate professor could have a background either in academic research or in practical crossmedia production and are expected to have at minimum a masters degree in a field relevant for crossmedia production. Candidates with practical backgrounds should present additionally their creative portfolio. All candidates have to be proficient in English and are expected to have substantial experience in higher education teaching. Teaching areas are expected to include transmedia storytelling, crossmedia development, intermediality, convergence culture, remix culture, media production studies, media management, media ecology, media archaeology, media semiotics or similar. We offer: a vibrant university with highly motivated students; advanced technical facilities for screen media production; opportunity to participate in designing a cutting edge study program together with the related research program; access to a high level research and practitioner network of the Nordic region; research support measures of the university, competitive remuneration package of European standards. Before Iran, Tunisia and Egypt, the Soviet coup attempt

The first example of network citizen journalism may have been during the August 1991 coup attempt by eight high level Soviet officials. There were two days of confrontation between demonstrators and troops, during which all Russian media except Usenet news groups were shut down by the authorities. Usenet, a precursor of today's Internet discussion forums, carried traffic into, out of and within Russia (70 cities) during the days of the coup attempt. One of the quotes from that time foreshadows the Internet shut down in Egypt today. Polina Antonova of RELCOM, the Unix distributor that operated the network wrote: "They try to close all mass media, they stopped CNN an hour ago, and Soviet TV transmits opera and old movies. But, thank Heaven, they don't consider RELCOM mass media or they simply forgot about it. Now we transmit information enough to put us in prison for the rest of our life". After two tense days, the coup failed and president Mikhail Gorbachev was restored to power. I don't know of any off the top of my head... Submission Deadline: March 15, 2011 Guest Editors: Johanne Kuebler and Ilhem Allagui The International Journal of Communication is accepting papers for its Features Section about the Tunisian and the Egyptian protests and their sequels in the Arab region. Despite numerous efforts by Arab leaders to limit Internet access and to censor all media—especially new media—the spread of satellite TV and the Internet have transformed the media landscape in the Arab and Muslim worlds. Revolutionary protests by Tunisians led to the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who maintained strict media censorship after 23 years in power. Similarly, just weeks after the Tunisian uprising, demonstrations and riots have left the rule of the Hosni Mubarak government in a quandary. The oppression of free speech and democratic political participation have galvanized both Tunisians and Egyptians into unprecedented acts of revolt, demonstrating perseverance toward the goal of real political change. Some observers attribute the success of the Tunisian revolution to the use of new media and social networking sites. While the penetration rate of Facebook in Tunisia is barely 19% (according to Socialbakers, the Facebook statistical portal), YouTube and DailyMotion were banned until January 13, 2011 despite Ben Ali’s desperate attempts to calm the population by promising unblocked access to Internet Web sites. Ben Ali eventually fled Tunisia on January 14. As of this writing, the outcome of the Egyptian uprisings remains to be seen, and the potential for similar uprisings throughout the Arab world is very much in evidence. This Features Section of the IJoC invites discussions about these events occurring in the North African region in relation to communication technologies. By addressing these events, we aim to have a better understanding of the role of communication technologies as instruments for social change. The submissions, empirical or theoretical, can be short observations, analyses or opinions of 1,500–5,000 words. Papers should follow the APA style (5th Ed.). Submissions will be peer reviewed. Tools to grab data from Wikipedia?

Greetings- I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to available tools or scripts that aid in grabbing Wikipedia data (things like edit histories, editor contributions, etc.). I know there are tools like WikiXRay that grab a huge amount of data, but I'm hoping there are other tools that can grab a much smaller subset of data, either around a certain group of articles or a certain group of editors.
