The 'Mobile learning: Crossing boundaries in convergent environments' Conference builds on a series of mobile learning research symposia hosted by the WLE Centre for Excellence at the Institute of Education, University of London between 2007 and 2009. It will focus on the challenges of developing new pedagogic approaches and on the potential of mobile devices for learning in formal and informal contexts. As mobile learning is not only about learning with mobile technologies, but also considered to be "new" learning, the conference will look at challenges for research and practice in understanding the changing social and technological structures allowing the use of technology for learning that are present in our personal lives, in school and in work places. Thus mobile learning crosses the boundary of institutional learning and looks at practical fields like work-based learning and medicine, too. Also, the conference will look at the latest developments in hardware and software which can support personalised learning. By focusing on theory and practice, development and use, teaching and learning, formal and informal contexts, the conference intends to offer spaces for researchers, practitioners, developers, the industry and policy makers to exchange ideas, experiences and research around issues and approaches to mobile learning, including sociological and educational issues and their effectiveness and desirability as learning spaces as well as the design of environments. The conference is preceded by the EduCamp, a BarCamp for people interested in media and learning, which will take place in Bremen from March 19-20, 2011. In collaboration with MirandaNet, the conference is running a MirandaMod (Twitter: #MirandaModBremen) on March 21, 2011 which addresses teachers and practitioners who are interested in teaching and learning with new technologies. Pontydysgu will broadcast their live internet radio show "Sounds of the Bazaar LIVE Radio Programme" from the conference. *apologies for cross-posting* CFP: Ethnographic Fiction & Speculative Design Workshop http://www.designculturelab.org/ethnographic-fiction-speculative-design-wor… Ethnographic Fiction and Speculative Design is a full-day workshop at the 5th International Conference on Communities & Technologies–C&T 2011, in Brisbane, Australia, 29 June-2 July, 2011. Position papers are due 1 April, 2011. Please email submissions to speculativedesign(a)gmail.com. Introduction While pervasive technology development and implementation proceed apace, the potential social and cultural implications – including the ways in which end user communities can be active participants in these processes – remain underexplored. The inherent invisibility of the technological infrastructure required to support these emerging networks makes it difficult to identify which objects around us might have computational capacities, or what those capacities might be. Without that sort of tangible knowledge, it is also difficult to imagine how such networks stand to reconfigure individual identities and social interactions, or how access, data privacy and ownership might be managed. Manifesting this knowledge in concrete, but not necessarily real or true, ways can be seen as a crucial first step in providing communities the means to productively engage such issues and concerns. UK designers Dunne and Raby have long argued that critical and speculative design have the “ability to make abstract issues tangible” and could be a valuable addition to “public debates about the social, cultural and ethical impact on everyday life of emerging and future technologies.” Bruce Sterling conjures design fiction as a way to engage cultural imaginaries, and Julian Bleecker more pointedly defines design fiction as a means of “questioning how technology is used and its implications, speculating about the course of events…and incit[ing] imagination-filling conversations about alternative futures.” But are all alternatives equal? And how can we use these future visions to act in the present? Goals of the Workshop This full-day workshop aims to explore how grounded ethnographic and action research methods can be transformed into fictional and speculative designs that provide people the kinds of experiences and tools that can lead to direct community action in the development and implementation of new pervasive technologies. “Ethnographic fiction is a form that blends the fact-gathering research of an anthropologist with the storytelling imagination of a fiction writer. It is not a true story, but it aims to depict a world that could be as it is told and that was discovered through anthropological research.” – Tobias Hecht In the first half of the workshop, individual participants will be invited to present brief position papers on issues related to the use of ethnographic research as a means for engaging multiple publics and speculative design as a means of enabling community action related to new pervasive technologies. “The speculative design process doesn’t necessarily define a specific problem to solve, but establishes a provocative starting point from which a design process emerges. The result is an evolution of fluctuating iteration and reflection using designed objects to provoke questions and stimulate discussion in academic and research settings.” – Nikhil Mitter Issues raised in the papers and discussions will be used to create design briefs for the second half of the workshop. Small groups will work collaboratively to complete the briefs and present the results to the group at the end of the day. Participation Authors are invited to submit 2-4 page position papers (in CHI Publications Format), on topics including, but not limited to: * Creative non-fiction and/or ethnographic fiction as methodology * Social and cultural issues related to pervasive computing * Speculative design, design fiction and/or critical design * Action research, community-based and/or public technology initiatives Accepted papers will be compiled and made available online, along with the design briefs and other workshop documentation. Dear listserv, A recent panel I was on at the Writing Across Borders conference in Fairfax, VA discussed varying levels of confidence among writing professors in automated scoring technologies. I have been working consistently in my field (Digital Humanities) over the past year, looking at advances in natural-language processing and their effect on writing curricula. Different software developers alert me from time to time to their projects in semantic technology and AI, wondering how such work may be used in education and writing. So... My request: As this field begins to mature, I'm wondering what kind of collections or archives already exist regarding semantic or language processing technology and education. My index so far seems quite minor. Is anyone on this list analyzing these developments? Regards, Francesca Musiani --------------------- International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Istanbul 2011 Theme: “Cities, Creativity, Connectivity” *CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO A SPECIAL SESSION ON* *"The University in Crisis* *”Tradition, innovation, and employment in Communications departments”* Organized by the Emerging Scholars Network * * * Over the past few years, students and faculty in California, Puerto Rico, Quebec, Greece and England, and other regions where the government has customarily given strong support to higher education, have responded to massive fee increases with protests and strikes. In other countries universities and students have recently been at the center of social struggles, as have communications technologies. What does this mean for the nature of academic employment and research in Communications? And how does neoliberal policy affect academic research and practice in Communications, an interdisciplinary area of study incorporating both critical theory and research directly applicable to the business world? The Emerging Scholars Network of the IAMCR invites interested scholars and advocates to submit abstracts for a round table on: “The University in Crisis: Tradition, innovation, and employment in Communications departments.” Present developments in academia in the Western world have followed a consistent trajectory of government disengagement, while institutions such as tenure and thesis-based PhDs are being questioned. Universities in the Global South are sometimes strongly supported by government and sometimes entirely private. We invite contributions that address one (or more) of the following themes: a) Historical traditions in universities and how Communications, as one of the newest disciplines in the humanities, has fit into these practices; regional differences in the nature of universities and changes affecting them; b) The role of Communications studies in studying, critiquing, alleviating or contributing to the negative effects of globalization; b) The effects of different funding sources on research and employment, as well as the role of corporations in universities and Communications departments; c) Case studies, personal ethnographies, and examples of new patterns of employment for emerging scholars; d) Possible solutions/attempts to reconcile such debates and address contemporary challenges: visionary proposals for preserving the value of higher education in a hostile political climate, the future of academic employment and the role of Communications in future universities. The Emerging Scholars Network welcomes proposals from both emerging and senior scholars.
