The theme of this year's Convention is "Space, Place, and the McLuhan Legacy." The theme reflects the University of Alberta's celebrations in 2011 of the birth of the influential scholar and public figure Marshall McLuhan in Edmonton, Canada, on July 21, 1911. Plenaries and Presentations Plenary speakers and panelists include Douglas Barbour, Richard Cavell, Gary Gumpert, Elena Lamberti, Robert Logan, Joshua Meyrowitz, Mark Poster, B.W. Powe, and Mark Wrathall. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING, the 7th International Workshop on Design & Semantics of Form & Movement, to be held 18-20 April, 2012, at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. http://desform2012.schoolofdesign.ac.nz/ DeSForM was conceived as “the first international conference seeking to present current research into the nature, character and behaviour of emerging new typologies of co-designed, content rich, connected and intelligent objects within adaptive systems.” (http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/sd/academic/scd/research/desformhome/desformwh…) It is a global conference with truly international participation, as witnessed in the recent success of the 2009 DeSForM conference in Taipei, Taiwan and in 2010 in Lucerne, Switzerland. DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING will continue this tradition of diversity and exchange, bringing its sphere of influence for the first time to the Southern Hemisphere. DeSForM 2012 workshop and conference will be hosted by Victoria University School of Design in Wellington, New Zealand from 18th–20th April 2012. In reaching out to the many innovative schools, businesses, designers, researchers and cultural organizations in the Southern Hemisphere and beyond, DeSForM 2012:MEANING.MATTER.MAKING will grow the organisation’s community, offering new horizons, insights and audiences. (apologies for cross-posting) Special Track on Recommendation, Data Sharing, and Research Practices in Science 2.0 (RDSRP '11) 7 September 2011 Graz, Austria http://i-know.at/RDSRP Deadline extended to 15 May 2011! Science 2.0 has become an umbrella term for the involvement of the web in science. It spans from the utilization of Web 2.0 tools and technologies in research to a more open and sharing approach to science. Some definitions of Science 2.0 even include notions of a methodological change due to the abundance of data, and the nature of the socio-technical systems on the web. For this special track, we would like to address three issues in Science 2.0 that have proven both promising and challenging at the same time: 1. The management of scientific data, both primary and secondary data (such as publication metadata, and other scientific content on the web) as a precondition for Science 2.0. 2. The recommendation of people and resources as a consequential next step in an exponentially growing scientific environment. 3. The change in scientific practices due to the involvement of Science 2.0 tools and technologies in the research process and the effects this has on science itself. This one-day special track is a program item of i-KNOW 2011, the 11th International Conference on Knowledge Management and Knowledge Technologies which takes place in Graz, Austria from September 7th to September 9th 2011. The workshop provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of Science 2.0. i-KNOW 2011 brings together international researchers and practitioners from the fields of knowledge management and knowledge technologies.
