As social media proliferate, it seems likely that organizational members will use them to carry out socialization, identification, collaboration, innovation, relationship development, persuasion, learning, social capital formation, and knowledge sharing processes. The explosive growth of these technologies has not gone unnoticed by communication and information scholars, as evidenced by the equally rapid growth in articles related to the uses and impacts of social media, including a prior special issue on social network sites here in JCMC (vol. 13, no. 1, 2007). Much of this prior work has been conducted among student populations or in the context of advertising and marketing, and, as such, has not focused on social media use in organizations. Studies that do take the organization into account, generally relate to such fields as information systems marketing, and strategic management, with the aim of understanding how social media can be leveraged to enhance business performance. Less well studied, however, is the influence of social media on a range of organizational communication processes within workplace contexts. Focus of the Special Issue We invite submissions to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication focusing on research on social media within the organizational context. Our aim is to highlight research that explores how the affordances of social media interact with organizational contexts, behaviors, and communication practices to influence processes of interest to organizational scholars. We are interested in submissions that enable us to better understand how social media affordances make a difference in workplace settings. Affordances are the result of the intertwining of capabilities provided by the technologies and the actions taken by the actors using them. Papers are especially welcome that integrate the material aspects of the technology with its use in organizational communication processes. Submissions that focus on such topics as the role of social media in attracting customers or influencing sales will be given less priority as these topics are extensively covered in other outlets. We are intentionally not providing a definition of social media in this call for papers, but ask authors to do so within their manuscripts. We encourage authors to be explicit about what it is about the media they are studying that makes them "social" and to provide definitions that are robust enough to endure over time. We encourage diverse methodological approaches, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Conceptual papers as well as empirical studies are welcome. All papers must be theoretically motivated. Submission Process and Author Guidelines Papers will undergo an initial screening by the three special issue editors in an accelerated review process. A set of selected papers will then be invited for submission to the JCMC system and will undergo a formal review led by the special issue editors in conjunction with JCMC reviewers. We can now announce all four conference keynote names note also the updates to submission and registration information (below): * Nick Montfort is associate professor of digital media at MIT and president of the Electronic Literature Organization. He develops text generators and interactive fiction and has participated in dozens of literary and academic collaborations. Montfort co-edited The New Media Reader and The Electronic Literature Collection Volume 1 and wrote Twisty Little Passages: An Approach to Interactive Fiction, Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System (with Ian Bogost), and Riddle & Bind. His next book, 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10, is a collaboration with nine other authors about a one-line Commodore 64 BASIC program. * Kristine Jørgensen is associate professor in media studies at the University of Bergen. She has published articles on game sound, the user interface in games, the player role, games research methods, the Norwegian game industry, and game narratives. She is the author of A Comprehensive Study of Sound in Computer Games, and is currently writing a book on game user interfaces. * Espen Aarseth is principal researcher at the Center for Computer Games Research, IT University of Copenhagen, and adjunct professor at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo. He is also co-founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Game Studies, founder of the Digital Arts and Culture conference series, and co-founder of the Philosophy of Computer Games conference series, and author of Cybertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature (Johns Hopkins UP 1997), a comparative media theory of games and other aesthetic forms. * Minna Ruckenstein is a Senior Researcher at the Finnish National Consumer Research Centre in Helsinki and the President of the Finnish Anthropological Society. Her ethnographic research has focused on childrens uses of virtual pets and virtual worlds. Recent articles contribute to the study of childhood from the perspectives of money, value creation and innovation. Published books include co-edited Rahan kulttuuri [The Culture of Money] (2009) and co-written Forget Innovation (2011). Have you recently visited product reviews and ratings sites, or sites of manufacturers and retailers of digital technology products? If so, we are interested in your views. We are investigating how users of digital technology products use reviews and ratings sites to search for information about products, and how these sites impact on purchasing decisions. We would like to invite you to contribute to our online survey. Background and disclaimer: The survey is completely anonymous and your name will not be connected to your identity. The questionnaire is in no way linked to you personally or your e-mail address. The data collected is safely stored and only the researcher has direct access to it. ICTs and minority communities research - reports available online

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use and connectivity of minority communities in Wales - Research by academics from Swansea University, Cardiff University and University of Glamorgan. The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded a collaboration between Swansea University, Cardiff University and the University of Glamorgan to develop a research project under the theme of Connected Communities. The work focused on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use and connectivity of minority communities in Wales. The study was completed in October 2011 and revealed that ICTs are key to promoting community connectivity in contemporary society in Wales and that sadly minority communities are at risk of both social and digital exclusion. Dr Panayiota Tsatsou from Swansea University and her colleagues Dr Ian Stafford (Cardiff University), Prof Gary Higgs, Dr Robert Berry and Dr Richard Fry (University of Glamorgan) completed a thorough review of research evidence. Their findings revealed that there is clear anecdotal evidence that minority communities, such as ethnic communities with individual cultural and language attributes, and communities of disabled people, for example, require bespoke policy in order to fully take advantage of communication technologies and to enhance their experiential inclusion and connectivity. The evidence, however, provided in existing (mostly quantitative) research data, fails to adequately explore these issues in full and some data is both difficult to identify and access. Therefore the researchers recommended that there is a clear rationale for developing more qualitative, fine grained, community-based research in order to explore the barriers to digital inclusion and the impact of digital inclusion/exclusion within minority groups. The project coordinator, Dr Tsatsou, said, 'AHRC Connected Communities funding allowed researchers from three different Universities in Wales with specialisms in media, geography and policy research to get together and conduct a systematic review of evidence in the interdisciplinary area of communication technologies, and connectivity of minority communities. Considering the Welsh context this work aims to enhance existing understanding of the role of new technologies in connectivity and inclusion of minority groups. Key gaps were identified in knowledge of the use of technologies by minority groups and highlighted challenges related to accessing evidence outside of the public domain. Finally, preliminary recommendations were made regarding how research should connect with communities and stakeholders to enhance research and inform policy. The researchers envisage developing this work by undertaking, together with communities in Wales, some small-scale, qualitative and community-oriented research so as to produce original evidence'.
