[Last fall I sent out the message below about a Communication Research Methods blog. I've realized since then that it's a lot easier to update a Facebook page than a wordpress blog, so I've copied the blog materials and added a lot more to the FB page at: http://www.facebook.com/CommunicationResearchMethods Please feel free to take a look, 'like' the page, and/or add your own posts. --Matthew ] In case it's of interest/use, I've created a Wordpress blog called "Communication Research Methods" for undergrad and grad level methods courses I teach at Temple University. The blog features (right now 100) news articles and other items that I've found over time that touch on key concepts and trade-offs in the processes of conducting, reporting and evaluating research (in communication and beyond). 19th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2013) Hyperconnected World: Anything Anywhere Anytime Chicago, Illinois, USA (http://amcis2013.aisnet.org <http://amcis2013.aisnet.org/>) 15--17 August 2013 Call for Papers for the mini track on "Global and Cross Cultural Aspects of Crowdsourced Content Production and Knowledge Repositories" Track: Global, International, and Cross Cultural Issues in IS (SIGCCRIS) Description With the advent of Web 2.0, many crowdsourced content production and repository sites, such as Wikipedia, YouTube, and Yahoo! Answers, are flourishing. Wikipedia, for example, became one of the top ten most popular websites. Many scholars have focused attention on information quality and processes of mass knowledge production, as well as the social aspects of these projects. However, significantly less attention has been given to their global nature. Wikipedia, for example, includes articles in 285 languages, Yahoo! Answers International is available in more than 25 languages, and YouTube in more than 60 languages. This global nature of such knowledge creation and content repository projects offers a rich socio-technical environment to examine international and cross cultural issues online. Previous studies are predisposed to primarily investigate the English version of these repositories, yet there is a need for more cross cultural research. The purpose of this minitrack is to showcase research on knowledge production projects that goes beyond their English versions. The minitrack welcomes both empirical and conceptual work and solicits innovative analysis of international and cross cultural aspects of these projects. We invite papers, research in progress, and panels. ## CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ## ## CHI 2013 Workshop Designing Gamification: ## ## Creating Gameful and Playful Experiences ## In recent years, gamification – the use of game design elements in non-game contexts – has seen rapid adoption in domains such as education, work, self-management, health and well-being, sustainability, or civic participation. In parallel, a growing body of research has studied its uses and effects, as well as the evaluation of game user experience in general. Yet little is known about the effective designing of gameful systems. This one-day workshop therefore convenes HCI, games, and design researchers as well as industry practitioners to take stock of current design practices and approaches to gameful systems, chart challenges, issues, and best practices, and identify key opportunities and questions for future research. You will also get to pop balloons. # Topics of Special Interest # * Postmortems, lessons learned, recurrent challenges and issues encountered in the design of gameful systems * Design models, principles, methods, tools, and evaluation methods adapted from interaction and game design * General and domain-specific constraints, opportunities, facilitating and success-critical conditions of gamification # Submission Information # We invite interested participants to submit a 3-4 page position paper in the CHI extended abstract format to Sebastian Deterding at chi2013(a)gamification-research.org. Researchers and practitioners with first-hand experience in designing a gameful system may alternatively submit a slide deck outlining their experience. ***** Please note that the extended deadline for paper proposals is December 10, 2012*** Newness and Emergence in Digital Media : Theoretical, Epistemological, and Methodological Considerations During the last two decades, the volume of scholarship on ³new technologies² and ³new media² has exploded. This is reflected at the institutional level by the introduction of specific courses and programs, dedicated journals, research chairs and so on. Also well established, if perhaps less common, are the notions of emerging technology and emerging media, which seem to be interchangeable with the former and which designate what corresponds, most of the time, to networked digital technologies. The terms are intended to distinguish these communication technologies from older ones, namely ³analog² electronic media, while avoiding the radical tone of discourses on their ³revolutionary² nature. Now that the ³digital turn² seems mostly complete its concrete forms showing signs of stabilization one can ponder the relevance of maintaining in scholarly literature such phrases as ³digital media², ³new media² and ³emerging media². Are they still productive in the sense of guiding and focusing a collective reflection that sheds light on contemporary communication phenomena? Conversely, the question of newness and related issues have always been at the heart of communication and media studies (Gitelman, 2006; Park, Jankowski & Jones, 2011). The same remark could be made about the notion of emerging media. Beyond specific objects, it seems to refer to an epistemological stance that favours the study of media technologies at a particular moment of their existence, that is, ³at nascent stage². This is particularly clear in the field of Internet Studies, where every two or three years a new ³trendy² device captures the attention of researchers. One wonders if that perpetual motion of renewal is not related, to a certain extent, to the very essence of digital media, or what Zittrain (2008) calls their generativity. The objective of this panel is to develop this reflection, by bringing together theoretical and epistemological insights on the category of ³emerging media² and its links with the digital. It also seeks to foster a discussion on methodological consequences (at the analytical level as well as at the level of methods of inquiry) resulting from the choice to focus on the new and the emerging in the field of mediated communication. The panel will be part of the Technology and Emerging Media (TEM) track of the Canadian Communication Association (CCA) conference to be held on June 5-7, 2013 in Victoria, BC, and will accomodate up to 8 papers. ***** Please note that the extended deadline for paper and panel proposals is December 10, 2012***** * CCA 2013 Annual meeting: Call for papers on the theme "Technology and Emerging Media" * Spurred by the success of last year¹s call, we once again invite you to submit a paper to the Technology and Emerging Media track at the next Canadian Communication Association Conference that will take place in Victoria, British Columbia from June 5 to 7, 2013. While the first "TEM Proceedings" are about to be published, we also invite you to consider submitting a short paper (2500-3000 words) relating to the presentation you plan to do in the TEM track next June. Detailed guidelines will be posted on the proceedings website and e-mailed later on. The "Technology and Emerging Media" track covers works on research objects or problematics which address the following topics: - Information and communication technologies, notably from the points of view of their design, diffusion, and uses; - Digital media and related social phenomena; - Issues related to recent technological developments in the field of communication: social media/social Web, mobile media, online games, and new diffusion platforms for traditional media. Encouraged by the positive response we received to the idea of establishing a formal interest group on this theme within CCA, we would like to go ahead with this project. A 2nd meeting will be held during the conference.
