The Tablet Symposium: Examining New Media Objects University of Sussex, 10th April 2013 CFP Calling for papers, presentations and discussions of tablets, ipads, kindles, e-readers and other new media artifacts. We invite contributions to a one-day symposium at the University of Sussex, hosted by the Centre for Material Digital Culture. The aim of the symposium is twofold. On the one hand it aims to examine questions about the take up of tablets, readers and ipads across many walks of life including academic, artistic, pedagogical, medical, corporate, activist and everyday contexts. On the other hand it aims to create a space of dialogue, discussion and research community across this area. We welcome empirical, theoretical, critical and creative responses to tablets, e-readers and other artifacts. We will share practices, identify key issues and potential for innovations in this space. Technology is becoming ever more integral to our home lives, and visions such as ubiquitous computing, smart technologies and the Internet of Things represent a further stage of this development. However studying interactions and experiences in the home, and drawing understanding from this to inform design, is a substantial challenge for many researchers in Human-Computer Interaction and other disciplines. In collecting data, understanding current practices, and evaluating potential designs, researchers need to consider a range of specific issues, such as domestication processes and intrusiveness. We also need to understand how varied relationships, activities, objects and physical spaces constitute our individual home lives. New technologies present opportunities for further data to be collected in home environments, but require a deep understanding of issues specific to home life. This workshop will bring together a cross-disciplinary group of researchers with experiences of researching technology in the home, in order to map the space of methods in use, identify connections, tensions and gaps, and explore the potential for further innovation to meet the challenges we face. Together we will develop a coherent understanding of this methodological space, and identify connections and gaps, where further development of methods can occur to overcome issues specific to studying the home. ----------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION We invite you to submit a 2-4 page position paper, based on your interests and experiences with studying technology in the home. This paper should outline a method that you have used in your research, and critically reflect on the application of this method to a study related to the home. It should then highlight the particular challenges faced, how the method used was, or could be, combined with other approaches, and how it could be further refined. We invite contributions from researchers working in areas including, but not restricted to: -Ethnographic or observational studies in homes, including dormitories and shared buildings -Approaches to exploring design through narratives, e.g. scenarios or user enactments -Prototype design and evaluation studies using field trials in homes, lab studies and smart home demonstrators built for research purposes -Living Lab and action research approaches to innovation related to the home -Automated approaches to capturing or analysing quantitative data about activities in the home -Application areas such as medical, assistive and e-health technologies, media and entertainment, smart appliances, smart grids, behaviour change, technologies for families, children and the elderly, home automation and many others where the home is a key context of use. In particular, we invite submissions which explore this space from an interdisciplinary perspective, and consider how the research areas above are combined in research projects. For example how ethnographic methods can be used in conjunction with creative design processes, or how qualitative understanding can be used in conjunction with quantitative data collected from sensors and logs of activity around the home. MacArthur Foundation. WIth Nalini Kotamraju and Isabel Froes, I am working on a pilot project about smartphone apps and people's intimate relationships with them. There exists data surrounding the number of apps downloaded e.g., but not so much surrounding the manner in which we use and identify with our smartphone apps. We've also looked at the classic works around mobile devices in general (Ling, Ito, Donner, etc.), but we're looking for app-specific data and research. Colleagues, With all due apologies for cross-posting: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture The Host City: (Re)Locating Media Events in the Network Era Guest Editor: Robert Moses Peaslee, Texas Tech University Assistant Guest Editor: Brendan Kredell, University of Calgary As media events (Couldry, Hepp & Krotz, 2010; Dayan & Katz,1992) of all stripe proliferate around the world, a variety of stakeholdersjockey for position and advantage in the geographical and cultural contextschosen to host them. Media events, as Dayan and Katz famously characterizedthem, were defined in part by their liveness, their physical remoteness from the majority of their “audience,” their interruptive nature, and their status, nonetheless, as pre-planned (prominent examples today would include the Olympic games, the annual film festival at Cannes, the Super Bowl, and music festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza). Many of these events are consistently located, well-established and have assumed a defensive position aimed at maintainingbrand identity and prestige. Others, such as the Olympics, change locations, while others (such as Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest) are ascendant, and still others are nascent at best. Each host community, however, has a unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media events in promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural and externalnetworks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the "local” to speak "globally,” and a variety of other processes. This special issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture seeks research articles engaging the media events literature and investigating the relationship between event and location, between location-as-text and location-as-infrastructure, between location and audience, between location and industry, and other relevant relationships, all in the context of networked media structures. Some relevant topics areas include, but are by no means limited to: Host city branding and image management Networked media events: the impact of social media Media events and host city governance Discourses of place in the media event “Thereness” and virtuality in the media event Media events as sites of resistance Community and ritual Media events, promotion and (g)local media Fannish practices in/around the media event The political economy of the media event The audience experience: affect, memory, place Media events and mobility Comparative analyses of host cities in media event contexts Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 500 words no later than January 15, 2013 to robert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editors on a rolling basis until then. Those authors whose abstracts are accepted will be required to submit full articles of 6000-7000 words (inclusive of notes, appendices, and works cited) no later than March 15, 2013. Full articles will be subject to a blind peer-review process, meaning that acceptance of an abstract does not denote acceptance of the full article. We anticipate accepting approximately 12 abstracts in order to produce an issue of 6-7 articles. Any revisions required by the reviewers will be expected by mid-June in order to publish the issue in early 2014. Authors wishing to propose relevant book reviews for the issue should also submit an abstract by January 15, 2013. Originally starting up from grass root, virtual communities have been evolved into essential business applications in today’s blossoming internet application diffusion process during the last two decades. Starting from the original marketing and branding purpose, the virtual communities have been influencing the overall business process with organizations. The implementation of virtual communities inside a company’s intranet and extranet is wide spread in major companies. A virtual world is a computer-generated three-dimensional space where users interact with one another and with objects in the environment through their avatars. Compared to the burgeoning diffusion of virtual community applications, the virtual world technology is still in the emerging stage and its application hasn’t been very popular despite many big companies are still keeping their virtual presence in SecondLife or their individual virtual world. In both virtual communities and virtual worlds, members’ participation and behavior play crucial role in sustaining the virtual communities or virtual worlds to run. The participation and behavior in these two areas share similarities yet differences do exist due to the design and situation differences of these two virtual places. There have accumulated various theories explaining partition and behaviors in both virtual communities and virtual worlds in the last two decades. The theories such as sense of belongs, TAM, social capital have all been used to explain virtual community participation. The theory to explain virtual world behavior is relatively less compared to those of virtual communities. However, there hasn’t been an established line of theory to explain participation and behaviors of these two virtual places. The aim of this mini track aims at calling for new theories, frameworks, and integrated work to explain participation and behaviors for these two areas. This minitrack welcomes both conceptual and empirical research on virtual community and virtual world participation behavior either at the individual, group, and organizational level. As part of the appointment, there is an emphasis upon individual research and research group leadership. In addition to developing personal research, the applicant is expected to initiate and lead research projects and applications, and to supervise Ph.D. candidates. The applicant will also be expected to take chief responsibility for advanced seminars. A certain amount of teaching at both first-cycle and third-cycle education can occur. HUMlab is the meeting place for Humanities, Culture and Information Technology at Umeå University. The Workshops Day will be held on the last day of the conference on July 11, 2013 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus — providing an informal setting for active exchange among social scientists, computer scientists, and other researchers and developers. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with 25–50 participants. Attendance is limited to active participants only. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers, who are encouraged to avoid a mini-conference format that is dominated by long talks and short discussions. Instead, the organizers should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants, and should encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. Workshops can be a half-day or full-day in length. A half-day workshop is assumed unless you specify otherwise in your proposal. Proposal Content Proposals for workshops should be no more than three (3) pages in length, and should contain the following: • A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific issues and research questions the workshop will focus on. • A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time and a list of proposed workshop activities that distinguish it from a mini-conference (e.g. games, brainstorming, etc). • A list of related workshops held previously at related conferences and a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from or how it follows-up on work presented at previous workshops. • A brief description of the proposed workshop format, regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion. • An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. • The names and full contact information (email and postal addresses, fax and phone numbers) of the organizing committee — three or four people knowledgeable in the field — and short descriptions of their relevant expertise. (Please specify main contact.) Strong proposals include organizers who bring differing perspectives to the workshop topic and who are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. • A list of potential attendees. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, for bridging the gaps between the social science and technology fields or between subfields of social media research, for elucidating the results of exploratory research, or for critiquing existing approaches. Because workshops are intended for focused exploration of special topics, topics that are already the subject of regular meetings are not appropriate. Workshop Organization Workshop organizers will be responsible for the following: • Producing a call for submissions/participation. The call for papers is due January 18, 2013; due to the short turnaround time, you should create a draft in tandem with your proposal. Organizers are responsible for additional publicity such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the ICWSM community. Organizers are encouraged to maintain their own web site. • Selecting participants. Workshop attendance is by invitation of the organizers. Selection of attendees will be made by the organizers on the basis of submissions due March 18, 2013. Workshop organizers will need to provide ICWSM-13 with a preliminary list of the participants on April 1, 2013. • Coordinating the production of the workshop papers and abstracts. AAAI coordinates the collection, production, and distribution of the technical reports or working notes for the workshops. Workshop papers and abstracts must be received by AAAI no later than April 1, 2013, and volumes are limited to a total of 200 pages. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through the AAAI Press. The Press (which retains the right of first refusal to publish) will furnish details of its program to interested organizers and authors. ICWSM will provide logistical support, and meeting places for the workshops, and will determine the dates and times of the workshops. ICWSM reserves the right to drop any workshop if the organizers miss the above deadlines. Workshops are not to be used as a vehicle for marketing products. A reduced workshop registration fee will be offered to ICWSM-13 technical program registrants. Submission Deadline Proposals must be received by January 9, 2013. Decisions about the Workshops Day program will be made by January 16, 2013.
