Hi Everyone, I know this is a topic that comes up a lot, but I'm ashamed to say I haven't been as good as I should be in terms of carefully following discussions about this topic. I'm now teaching a course that is all about becoming a teacher of statistics, and my co-instructor and I would like to discuss alternatives to the traditional textbook. We were hoping to share some readings or web material with students that might give them some good ideas about the issues to consider when adopting electronic textbooks. Do you know of particularly good articles we might share with our students, or any websites or even blogs that might debate the pros and cons of e-books? I am also doing my own searching, but if you have particular references you are fond of, I'd love to hear about them. Thank you for your time and for any suggestions you might have! List/ Thanks for your posting Michelle ! Since late November 2010, I have been actively involved in identifying and documenting major/minor cites/sites relating to DigitalTextbooks, first through my blog _DT > Digital Textbooks_ [ http://digital-textbooks.blogspot.com/ ] and more recently through a Mendeley bibliographic database [ http://www.mendeley.com/ ]. This database currently contains ~ 1,500 records. While the blog is public, the database currently is not. However, I do post the most significant cites / sites in Facebook; Please feel free to 'Friend' me. Within the next week or so, I will be reviewing the blog and datasbase for resources to identify major themes for a library presentation on DTs that I will give at the end of this month. At this time I plan an overview of major platforms, major initiatives, and library-related projects. I will self-archive the PPT slides and let the list know when the presentation is available. BTW: If there are any institutions / organizations interested in hosting / sponsoring a presentation / workshop on DTs, I plan to travel to Europe in mid-September 2012 to give a workshop (or two) in France and Italy, and could be available to present in other venues. I also can be available to present in North America this Spring / Summer / Fall. Dear all, I'm a graduate student in the Communication. Culture, and Technology MA program at Georgetown university. I am currently taking a course entitled Technology and Social Exclusion <http://courses.georgetown.edu/?courseID=CCTP-632>. For my first research paper I'm writing a paper about how the use of online dating site by LGBT communities has changed over the past decade? I have look at OKcupid trends and Pew, but the data has only been somewhat helpful. I was wondering if anyone could direct me to some quantitative studies surveys that have been done on LGBT internet use in the past decade? Thanks! And looking forward to hearing back. The Web giant announced Tuesday that it plans to follow the activities of users across nearly all of its ubiquitous sites, including YouTube, Gmail and its leading search engine. Google has already been collecting some of this information. But for the first time, it is combining data across its Web sites to stitch together a fuller portrait of users. Consumers won’t be able to opt out of the changes, which take effect March 1. CIRC10: Social Media, Digital Entertainment, Governance & Social Movements Ten years ago, when China’s Internet population totaled 22.5 million and Facebook and Twitter had not even been conceived, a group of researchers came together to organize a conference to study the Internet in China. By all indications even then, it was clear that China would have a major impact on the global digital economy. Ten years on, that foresight has been vindicated. China today has the largest Internet population of any country and it has made its presence felt in the Internet space. In all aspects of the Internet – online gaming, micro blogging, search engines, e-commerce, content regulation, Internet governance, international domain names – China is both changing and being changed by the Internet. The annual Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC) investigates these phenomena, asking probing questions into what, how, to what extent, and why these changes are taking and have taken place. Hosted by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, the 10th Annual Chinese Internet Research Conference – CIRC10 – will be held on May 22-23, 2012, in Los Angeles, the world's entertainment capital. CIRC10 will examine trends and themes as we explore the ways in which the Internet and other technologies interact with Chinese cultural and social life. We welcome contributions from all and disciplines that seek to address these themes. This interdisciplinary conference brings together scholars, analysts, industry leaders, journalists and legal practitioners from around the world to examine the impact of the Internet on Chinese societies, its social, cultural, political and economic aspects, as well as how China is changing the Internet. Submissions may come from any discipline. What governments have programs/initiatives/funds to support "net activism"?

Hello, I am trying to put together a short-list of countries that have publicly created programs/initiatives/funds to support political net activism, most often for democracy promotion. The US Department of State, and Swedish Foreign Ministry are two excellent examples. Does such a list exist that covers other countries? If not, would you kindly let me know of the ones you know of -- I will happily compile the responses and post a shared document for those interested in this question. We hope to bring together researchers from a range of disciplines, including sociology, communications, philosophy, economics, English, history, political science, information science, the performing arts and many more. Other events may be added before April. The first Theorizing the Web conference happened last year. We decided to do this because there often is not a place for scholars who are theorizing about the Internet and society to gather and share their work. The 2011 program consisted of 14 panels, two workshops, two symposia (one on social media’s role in the Arab revolutions, the other, on social media and street art), two plenaries (by Saskia Sassen on "Digital Formations of the Powerful and the Powerless" and George Ritzer on "Why the Web Needs Post-Modern Theory"), and a keynote by danah boyd from Microsoft Research and NYU on "Privacy, Publicity Intertwined." Presenters traveled from around the world (including Hong Kong and New Zealand). The archive is available here. There will be a new website with much more information coming January 2012.
