Study into fans' changing usage patterns of the sports media landscape

Hi all, I'm a PhD candidate at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. I'm doing a comparative study of the use by sports fans of different types of sports media. For my methodology I'm using a survey. The first round of the survey was done in 2008, and over the past year I've been doing the second round. The reason I mention it here is that I need a few more responses for the second round and so I'm wondering if anyone is interested in sport, whether you'd like to take a few minutes to complete the survey for me. Call For Papers: Media, Fans, and The Sacred: Neoreligiosity Seeks Institution

This might be of interest to some members on the list. -Kelly Call for paper proposals *The deadline for submissions for this issue is August 1st, 2012* Kinephanos’ fourth issue aims to explore the relationship between the sacred, the mythological motifs in modern popular fictions, and fandom. Our goal is to understand how the sacred, a pure human emotion, is disembodied from the ‘official’ religious institutions – at least in the Western countries – in order to be reinvested in secular cultural activities like ‘going to see a movie’ or ‘playing a video game’. Eliade wrote: “Movies, a ‘factory of dreams’, are highly inspired by countless mythological motifs, such as the struggle between the Hero and the Monster, battles and initiation ordeals, figures and exemplary patterns” (freely translated from *Le sacré et le profane*, 174). These mythological stories, highly symbolics, exist since ancient times. However, we would like to address the following issue: how the immersive experience in a work of fiction, now facilitated with various technological media forms (movies, videogames, television shows, etc.), changes our own relationship with the emotion of the sacred sparked in people’s life. We propose to identify this emotion with the term “neoreligiosity”. An English scholar of fan culture, Matt Hills, says in this regard: “Neoreligiosity implies that the proliferation of discourses of ‘cult’ within media fandom cannot be read as the ‘return’ of religion in a supposedly secularised culture” (*Fan Culture*, 2002, 119). Indeed, putting side by side the experience of the fan with the religious experience might seem appropriate. Due to a lack of words, needed by fans to describe their own affective experience with their favorite movies, the use of religious terminology seems logical, without calling upon religious institutions structure. Hills quotes Cavicchi: “(…) fans are aware of the parallels between religious devotion and their own devotion. At the very least, the discourse of religious conversion may provide fans with a model for describing the experience of becoming a fan” (2002, 118). This issue of Kinephanos proposes to explore how the sacred, the religiosity, and the neoreligiosity play out in modern popular fictions, and with those who experience it : the fans. Possible topics include, but are not limited to; - *Sacred and reappropriation (fans creations : fanfics, fanfilms, etc.); * - *Social network, sharing interests through Internet;* - *Reception, modern and contemporary myths (Star Wars, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, etc.);* - *Cinema and religion, displacement of the sacred;* - *Videogames, replayability as a tool of self-exploration (Mass Effect, Heavy Rain, morality system, etc.);* - *Revelation, epiphany, and the fan’s experience;* - *Cinema and videogames, mythological motifs between the lines; vestiges of the sacred;* - *Repetition viewing as a ritual, ‘cult fandoms’ and television shows (Star Trek, Doctor. Who, etc.);* - *Archetypal figures in the modern mythologies (Order and Chaos, Lovecrafts’s Great Old Ones, the hero’s journey (monomyth) in Hollywood movies, etc.).* While Kinephanos privileges publication of thematic issues, *we strongly encourage writers to submit articles exceeding the theme* which will be published in each issue. How to submit? Abstracts of 1000 words including the title, the topic and the object(s) that will be studied. Please include bibliographical references, your name, email address and your primary field of study. The book details internet-driven changes at the organizational layer of American politics. It is a far-more-extensive version of the talk I gave at IR 12.0 in Seattle last October. Regards, Dave Karpf ---- Book Description The Internet is facilitating a generational transition within America's advocacy group system. New "netroots" political associations have arisen in the past decade and play an increasingly prominent role in citizen political mobilization. At the same time, the organizations that mediate citizen political engagement and sustained collective action are changing. They rely upon modified staff structures and work routines. They employ novel strategies and tactical repertoires. Rather than "organizing without organizations," the new media environment has given rise to "organizing through different organizations." The MoveOn Effect provides a richly detailed analysis of this disruptive transformation. It highlights changes in membership and fundraising regimes - established industrial patterns of supporter interaction and revenue streams - that were pioneered by MoveOn.org and have spread broadly within the advocacy system. Through interviews, content analysis, and direct observation of the leading netroots organizations, the book offers fresh insights into 21st century political organizing. The book highlights important variations among the new organizations - including internet-mediated issue generalists like MoveOn, community blogs like DailyKos.com, and neo-federated groups like DemocracyforAmerica.com. It also explores a wider set of netroots infrastructure organizations that provide supporting services to membership-based advocacy associations. The rise of the political netroots has had a distinctly partisan character: conservatives have repeatedly tried and failed to build equivalents to the organizations and infrastructure of the progressive netroots. The MoveOn Effect investigates these efforts, as well as the late-forming Tea Party movement, and introduces the theory of Outparty Innovation Incentives as an explanation for the partisan adoption of political technology. Description: In what ways do innovations in media require new research approaches? This one-day workshop welcomes all PhD- and post-doctoral researchers dealing with new approaches to researching users, producers and texts arising from Media Innovations. Media Studies is an interdisciplinary field, traditionally combining approaches primarily from the humanities and the social sciences, and related quantitative and qualitative methods such as audience research, ethnographic studies, case studies, discourse, content and textual analysis. However, innovations in media technologies and changing modes of usage and engagement bring about transformation of the media sector. These in turn result in the integration of additional approaches to the interdisciplinary palette, such as Information and Communication Technology and Innovation Studies; or, in the broadening of perspectives related to particular methods, such as ethnography. These developments highlight the importance of insight into new business models, algorithmic manipulation and the availability of Big Data, and additional ethical challenges in new media environments. These approaches both enrich the study of media and give rise to additional questions relating to how best to deal with empirical and theoretical approaches to research.
