Colleagues, With all due apologies for cross-posting: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture The Host City: (Re)Locating Media Events in the Network Era Guest Editor: Robert Moses Peaslee, Texas Tech University Assistant Guest Editor: Brendan Kredell, University of Calgary As media events (Couldry, Hepp & Krotz, 2010; Dayan & Katz,1992) of all stripe proliferate around the world, a variety of stakeholdersjockey for position and advantage in the geographical and cultural contextschosen to host them. Media events, as Dayan and Katz famously characterizedthem, were defined in part by their liveness, their physical remoteness from the majority of their “audience,” their interruptive nature, and their status, nonetheless, as pre-planned (prominent examples today would include the Olympic games, the annual film festival at Cannes, the Super Bowl, and music festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza). Many of these events are consistently located, well-established and have assumed a defensive position aimed at maintainingbrand identity and prestige. Others, such as the Olympics, change locations, while others (such as Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest) are ascendant, and still others are nascent at best. Each host community, however, has a unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media events in promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural and externalnetworks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the "local” to speak "globally,” and a variety of other processes. This special issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture seeks research articles engaging the media events literature and investigating the relationship between event and location, between location-as-text and location-as-infrastructure, between location and audience, between location and industry, and other relevant relationships, all in the context of networked media structures. Some relevant topics areas include, but are by no means limited to: Host city branding and image management Networked media events: the impact of social media Media events and host city governance Discourses of place in the media event “Thereness” and virtuality in the media event Media events as sites of resistance Community and ritual Media events, promotion and (g)local media Fannish practices in/around the media event The political economy of the media event The audience experience: affect, memory, place Media events and mobility Comparative analyses of host cities in media event contexts Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 500 words no later than January 15, 2013 to robert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu><mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editors on a rolling basis until then. Those authors whose abstracts are accepted will be required to submit full articles of 6000-7000 words (inclusive of notes, appendices, and works cited) no later than March 15, 2013. Full articles will be subject to a blind peer-review process, meaning that acceptance of an abstract does not denote acceptance of the full article. We anticipate accepting approximately 12 abstracts in order to produce an issue of 6-7 articles. Any revisions required by the reviewers will be expected by mid-June in order to publish the issue in early 2014. Authors wishing to propose relevant book reviews for the issue should also submit an abstract by January 15, 2013. New transnational and online environments where young people spend their time affect also research methodologies, ethics and data. With the rise of new contexts and advanced methods for gathering and analysing empirical material, contemporary research combines various approaches and methods alongside with new research problems. The course includes introductory keynote lectures by the experts of youth research covering different methodological approaches. The main focus is on seminars where PhD students present and discuss their papers under the guidance of keynote speakers. The purpose is to enable doctoral students to receive detailed feedback from professors as well as fellow doctoral students. All papers discussing compatibility between new research problems and methods, the wide range of qualitative, quantitative, internet based, offline and combined methods, as well as ethical considerations in youth research, are welcome. Selected papers will be published in conference proceedings. Abstracts (max 200 words) should be sent by e-mail to nyris12summerschool(a)tlu.ee by February 15 at the latest. Applicants will receive notice of acceptance by the end of February. Summer school includes preparation work with reading materials. Theorizing the Web is an annual conference that focuses specifically on major theoretical questions raised by the Web’s entrance into everyday life. We seek to bring together an inter/non-disciplinary group of scholars, journalists, artists, and commentators, and to encourage interrogations of power, social inequality, and social justice. Intersections of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability are woven throughout the conference rather than confined to specific panels. This year's conference with take place on March 1st and 2nd at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York, NY. Call for Papers for Special Issue of Future Internet on Inequalities in the Digital Environment The open source journal Future Internet is currently looking for papers for an issue on inequality in the online or digital environment. This is an excellent opportunity for younger scholars and also for those with research that may not fit in other journals. This special issue of Future Internet is dedicated to exploring inequalities between groups in the digital environment. The “digital environment” here refers to the social space produced through devices that allow users to go online (mobile phones, desktop computers, tablet computers, etc). Papers should explore inequalities in the digital environment between economic classes, racial groups, communities, and other types of social groups and categories. Call for Proposals for ICA Preconference on China and the New Internet World in Oxford on 14 June 2013

Planning for the ICA Preconference on China and the New Internet World is progressing well. It will be held at the University of Oxford on the 14th of June, prior to the main ICA Conference in London. The programme will be open for short abstracts of proposed papers to be presented at the pre-conference, with abstracts due by 1 February 2013, and completed papers due by 1 May 2013. Numerous studies have focused on mapping the challenges and opportunities faced in designing technologies that are appropriated to the needs of contemporary families. However, few research lines have focused on supporting families with diverse structures and situations (i.e. divorced, same-sex, dealing with death, work-related periodic separation and reunion). This workshop aims to explore the research space of family design and further our understanding of what it means to design technologies for diverse family structures. During the workshop we will readdress the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. This one-day workshop will bring together researchers, practitioners and designers who are interested in furthering our understanding of designing technologies for diverse families. Indicative examples of these family types include those separated by divorce, families that experience periodic transitions between being together and apart due to work-related reasons, foster and many-children families, same-sex and multicultural families as well as families experiencing chronic illnesses. During the workshop we will revisit the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. ## SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ## ## CHI 2013 Workshop Designing Gamification: ## ## Creating Gameful and Playful Experiences ## In recent years, gamification – the use of game design elements in non-game contexts – has seen rapid adoption in domains such as education, work, self-management, health and well-being, sustainability, or civic participation. In parallel, a growing body of research has studied its uses and effects, as well as the evaluation of game user experience in general. Yet little is known about the effective designing of gameful systems. This one-day workshop therefore convenes HCI, games, and design researchers as well as industry practitioners to take stock of current design practices and approaches to gameful systems, chart challenges, issues, and best practices, and identify key opportunities and questions for future research. You will also get to pop balloons. # Topics of Special Interest # * Postmortems, lessons learned, recurrent challenges and issues encountered in the design of gameful systems * Design models, principles, methods, tools, and evaluation methods adapted from interaction and game design * General and domain-specific constraints, opportunities, facilitating and success-critical conditions of gamification # Submission Information # We invite interested participants to submit a 3-4 page position paper in the CHI extended abstract format to Sebastian Deterding at chi2013(a)gamification-research.org. Researchers and practitioners with first-hand experience in designing a gameful system may alternatively submit a slide deck outlining their experience.
