>From what I can tell the situation seems to be that some member states are playing ball and have enforced the Cookie Directive (2009/136/EC) and others, such as the UK, have been dragging their heels. This involvesapplications of the Directives where consent does not need to be obtained upfront. Hmm! I have not read the NY Times article, but it is not all cookie-use that is affected and it is possibly here where the confusion lay. Instead whereas in the past website owners/managers had to tell users how they used cookies, and how users might opt-out if they objected, they now have to gain consent from users if they are to place cookies on a user’s machine. Exceptions to this rule are restricted to situations where the placement of cookies relates to a service explicitly requested by the user, as with the case of automatic form-filling for example. Third-party cookies, the type employed by behavioral advertising firms, are given special attention by the legislation. Alternatives to Wolfram alpha?

dear all - I am part of an 8 person team from UCL going out in April to study the impact of social networking sites in 7 countries over the next 15 months. (You can find more about our project here: http://ow.ly/1MZJcg ) All of us are following this list now and would like to ask a question to those conducting research on Facebook. We need to find a way of calculating the top twenty five people who interact with a person's facebook profile. We assume we can only do this with respect to postings, rather than chat or private messaging (unless someone knows otherwise). We are aware that Wolfram Alpha does this for comments but it would be better to include likes, sharing etc. Any suggestions welcome. Many thanks juliano spyer

What can/should computers do?

Hello air-l-er's, I'm looking for literature reporting on empirical investigations of perceptions about both what computers can do and what computers should do. I'm familiar with a number of philosophical pieces considering potential abilities and/or limits of computers (Turing, Minsky, Dreyfus, Weizenbaum, etc.). However, most of those are philosophical or abstract arguments made by philosophers of or researchers in artificial intelligence. I've not been able to find any work that examines lay or non-expert beliefs about either what computational systems are (not) capable of or what are (in)appropriate tasks for computational systems to perform. To sum up, here's what I'm looking for: - perceptions of computers' (suit)abilities - empirical research (not philosophical arguments) - emphasis on lay/non-expert perceptions (not researchers in AI) - bonus points if related to natural language processing - bonus points if related to political coverage, opinions, and/or bias Thanks in advance, ~Eric

Dear privacy wonks, I've just read a NY Times story reporting on U.S. business and governmental lobbying of the European Parliament to weaken what are characterized as current European proposals, including: "Web businesses would be unable to perform basic collecting and profiling of individual computer users unless they gave their explicit consent as part of policies that allow them to specify what kinds of information could be collected and for what purpose." As I understand it, however, the requirement for such consent is already law under the recently amended EU ePrivacy Directive. Call for Abstracts, deadline Jan 31 Digital Media and Society Papers are sought that illuminate the role of digital media in contemporary societies. The theoretical framework of the paper should fit recognizably within the field of sociology. It may be analytical or structural in nature (eg. network analysis) or more oriented to the phenomenology of the experience of social interactions involving digital media (eg. the analysis of interactions; the presentation of the self). Ideally all the papers, while specializing in certain areas, will demonstrate an awareness of the importance of both of these dimensions in how digital media shapes and is shaped by social life. The idea is to highlight current research, to encourage intellectual community among sociological researchers in this area, and to provide an opportunity to identify and deepen shared themes of research. Looking for SMS/web gateway

Hi all, I'm working on developing an experiment which will require the use of SMS--specifically, sending messages on a scheduled and/or random basis, collecting a response from the recipient, and then sending a follow-up message. Can anyone suggest a service, developer or piece of software that would be able to accomplish this? I have a (very small) budget, so price is a small consideration, but I'm open to any suggestions you guys might have. Thanks!
