Best, Anna Haverinen Digital Culture, University of Turku, Finland _____________ CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Thanatos vol. 3 1/2014 Theme issue: Death, mourning and the internet Computer and mobile technologies have now provided a new space and medium to connect and share at the time of loss and bereavement. People seek out for places of ritualised actions, such as lighting candles, writing eulogies, visit memorials during anniversaries and feeling the sense of community at the time of loss. Internet provides a new space for rituals, feeling of co-presence and communality, where memorials are being erected in various online environments. This new way of expressing mourning and honoring are rising interesting questions about value, family, identity, friendship and love. Who is allowed to create a virtual memorial? Who has access and ownership to the material we leave online? Is it only the young people, the Web 2.0 generation,and the digital natives, who are appropriating internet technology to cope with loss and bereavement? What are the problems of using the internet in hospice care? How virtuality, death and/or the after world are being conceptualised through the Web? Thanatos (www.thanatos-journal.com) is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary and a scientific webjournal published by the Finnish Death Studies Association (www.kuolemantutkimus.com) We publish twice a year a journal that consists of articles, short and long research reports, book reviews, columns and seminar reports. The primary publication language is Finnish, but we do accept manuscripts in English and Swedish as well, however, the costs of proofreading are the responsibility of the author. We now invite abstracts in English, Swedish or Finnish (max 400 words) for articles (max 8000 words) and research reports (max 5000 words) from the following example themes: • Digital afterlife • Internet and hospice care • Space and spatiality in virtual memorials • Identity and virtual memorials • Online memorials and heritage • Memorials and online gaming • Death and Facebook • Memorial videos in Youtube (Vimeo etc.) • Online funerals The above mentioned topics are only examples and we encourage you to send your own ideas as well. Dear all, I'm writing about some of the factors that keep people posting to social networks for my upcoming book "Sharing Our Lives Online- Risks and Exposure in Social Media". One of the ones I'm considering is the potential stigmatisation of those who “stick out" in their peer groups for either not participating at all on social networks or keeping a very low profile. I've seen a few studies about why people choose not to join eg: Eric P.S. Baumer, Phil Adams, Vera D. Khovanskaya, Tony C. Liao, Madeline E. Smith, Victoria Schwanda Sosik, and Kaiton Williams. 2013. CALL FOR PAPERS: AMCIS Minitrack - Global and Cross Cultural Impacts of Big Data 20th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS): Smart Sustainability, the Information Systems Opportunity, Savannah, GA, August 7-10, 2014 Conference Website: http://amcis2013.aisnet.org/ DESCRIPTION Manyika et al. (2011; 4) note “big data has now reached every sector of the global economy. Like other essential factors of production … much of modern economic activity simply couldn’t take place without it.” An emerging grand challenge involves gathering, organizing, curating, managing, analyzing, visualizing and disseminating these heterogeneous data over the lifecycle of the data for such purposes such as scientific discovery, medical advances, entrepreneurial activity and public policy formulation. People in the public and private sectors are taking note of this development as are academics, who are exploring ways of dealing with big data, defined by the National Science Foundation (2012) as: …large, diverse, complex, longitudinal, and/or distributed data sets generated from instruments, sensors, Internet transactions, email, video, click streams, and/or all other digital sources available today and in the future. This minitrack solicits high quality conceptual and empirical work that focuses on the global impacts of big data on governments, multinational companies, NGOs and other organizations. Big data datasets and the technologies for analyzing them are developing faster than our understanding of the ways in which this phenomenon is impacting and will impact the ways work is done in a wide range of settings. As scholars and researchers begin to investigate the impacts of Big Data, this minitrack provides a venue for them to share their work. Book announcement: "Favela Digital - The other side of technology".

Dear AoIRist and CI-ers, * I apologize in advance for the self-promoting email* My first book "Favela Digital - The other side of technology" was published in October in Brazil, and now is available on Amazon. The idea for this book came up during the fieldwork I did in Vitória, Brazil for my doctoral dissertation. My research aims to understand the experience of marginalized people in community technology centers and how this experience informs the ways we think about what constitutes "empowerment" and "disempowerment" vis-à-vis technology. The book "Digital Favela - The other side of technology" is an opportunity to show, in photos, the reality I lived in during six months visiting the marginalized communities of São Benedito, Bairro da Penha, Itararé, Gurigica, Jaburu e Consolação. Along with the team from Varal Communications Agency, I captured the everyday life in the favelas and how the residents use digital technology. My goal with this book is to make people aware that alternative use of such technologies, in these areas of social abandonment, is legitimate and deserves our attention. The photos are followed by testimonials given by residents, my own observations, or parts of academic papers. The texts critically engage the reader with social issues of technology use in favelas and in society in general. The book is also a way to highlight themes addressed by Social Informatics in order to trigger discussions involving the general public. Hi David, Laura Portwood-Stacer has done some fabulous work on people who abstain from social media. She pays some attention to how this abstention is perceived, though I seem to remember her focus being more squarely on motivations of non-participants, and particularly on links to non- and anti-consumerist ideologies. She's got one piece in NMS and another in J Consumer Culture. Possibly others by now? There's also Kate Crawford's work on lurking, an essay in Continuum and a chapter in a book called Cultures of Participation, though this is in some ways further afield. I've got a project on lurking moving now, also further afield, but only a couple of conference papers so far (at academia.edu) Both Crawford and I have interest in the ways non-participation gets framed, though I'm not sure how it matches with what you're doing. We are interested in understanding and supporting the evolution of social theory, socio-technical theory, and social informatics in information systems research. We want to highlight research that uses these approaches to critically examine the constitution of information and communications technologies, and their roles in organizations and society; these are among the most important questions about IS, organizations, and society. We particularly invite IS research that applies, builds on, compares, or critiques these social theories. We are interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and theorize about application domains including large-scale social and organizational phenomena. We seek to attract research papers and research-in-progress papers from all IS researchers who are using the work of social theorists, organizational theorists, sociotechnical theorists, and cultural anthropologists, symbolic interactionists, and many others. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory 1) to address issues of designing a smart and sustainable digital future, 2) to answer questions about how we are interacting with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards sustainability, and 3) to critically examine the constitution of ICTs, and their roles in the design, maintenance and dissolution of sustainable organizations and social groups. This will be the 14th consecutive year for the Mini Track at AMCIS, and we hope to continue a tradition of high quality paper submissions, thought-provoking presentations and lively discussion for all IS researchers using, or considering the use of, social theory in their work. Beyond Facebook and other current social networking spaces, we would also encourage examinations of other social media like Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc., along with theoretical approaches to literate practice such as the use of hashtags as an organizational schema, the role of tagging in Facebook as a means of communal affiliation, the curation of Pinterest categories as a repository of research materials, and so on. Writing in social media is both timely and exciting, and this special issue as a call for additional scholarly attention to the intersections of writing studies and social media tools. Indeed, in an age of nearly ubiquitous social media use, it is important for us to pay academic attention to these technologies with a specific eye toward the copious amounts of writing that are composed, circulated, and read in social media. Thus, this special issue will gather webtexts that attend to writing in social media: its production, circulation, presentation, and pedagogical applications. The special issue will be a curated series of webtexts that examine how writing is both facilitated by social media and influenced by the affordances and constraints of social media technologies. *Call for Webtexts (CFW)* We invite born-digital webtexts that explore the intersections of social media and writing in higher education. The guest editors imagine social media broadly and encourage pieces that examine specific social media technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc., within theoretical frameworks as well as pieces that look at writing within larger social media categories, such as micro-blogging, social networking, etc. We invite authors to organize their webtexts as appropriate for one of the following four sections: *Topoi*: *Kairos*’ Topoi section includes extended scholarly analyses of large-scale issues relating to rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy. We encourage webtexts for the Topoi section of this special issue to examine social media writing within specific theoretical frameworks. We see this section as likely addressing specific large-scale implications (such as gender, sexual identity, race and ethnicity, group affiliation, identity politics, privacy and surveillance, and data mining) that emerge when writing happens in these spheres. *Praxis*: *Kairos*’ Praxis section publishes scholarly investigations into the intersections of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy with an emphasis on what happens in the writing/rhetoric classroom and why. Webtexts should showcase how writing is informed by emerging technologies foregrounding practical aspects (i.e., how would one use the technique being described? Who might benefit from following the author's approach and why?) while providing a theoretical grounding. The editors see this section as focusing overtly on social media and pedagogy: How are social media shaping and being shaped by educational issues related to writing studies? We encourage webtexts that concentrate on specific social media technologies (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.) along with theoretical approaches to literate practice such as the use of hashtags as an organizational schema, the role of tagging in Facebook as a means of communal affiliation, the curation of Pinterest categories as a repository of research materials, and so on. *Interviews*: We encourage interviews with authors who regularly write about social media technologies, use social media in their classrooms, and/or develop and maintain social media technologies. We also encourage interviews that move beyond the borders of writing and rhetoric to seek out interdisciplinary interviews with scholars from other fields who do exciting work with social media. Finally, we see the Interviews section as a place for more experimental approaches to “the interview,” such as an interview with scholars on the creation of their personal profiles in Facebook, the maintenance of their identities across multiple social media, or an examination of their network of friends, for example. Informal queries before a formal proposal are welcome. *Book Reviews*: The guest editors seek reviews of the following books and welcome queries for reviews of other recent books that focus on social media and writing in higher education. Submissions should include all authors’ contact information and a brief design statement (50-100 words) or design prototype for all proposed authors. Your brief design statement should describe any previous experience composing web-ready or born-digital pieces as well as initial ideas for your webtext—its look and feel, technologies to be used in composing, etc. Initial queries are welcome. I’m preparing to conduct privacy-related research as my dissertation topic. I’m attempting to deploy an online survey and investigate cultural differences in how individuals disclose personal information during e-commerce transactions. In order to fund my research, I need to raise roughly $3K (recruit, deploy, and translate survey).
