(Pay special attention to the *Criticisms* section.) Reform ECPA: Tell the Government to Get a Warrant Americans are deeply concerned about NSA surveillance. But the NSA’s not the only problem. An outdated law says the IRS and hundreds of other agencies can read our communications without a warrant. That law, known as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), was written over 25 years ago, before the services we use today even existed. Right now, several bills in Congress would fix this by updating ECPA to require a warrant, but regulatory bodies are blocking reform in order to gain new powers of warrantless access. We call on the Obama Administration to support ECPA reform and to reject any special rules that would force online service providers to disclose our email without a warrant. Hello, I second guidebook.com<http://guidebook.com>. I've seen it used at the Differential Mobilities Conference in Montreal in May, and with HASTAC last spring. It allows you to upload images, tweets, make your own conference plan, notes, etc. Although this may be obvious, but the key to having a lively social media component to any conference is having dedicated social media people who can monitor hashtags, upload images, participate in backchannel conversations and also know how to effectively synthesize presenter ideas in 140 characters. I have done social media / photography coordination for conferences before. We argue that examining non-use – when and how people do not use technology – is an equally informative line of inquiry. This workshop will consider the theories, methods, foundational texts, and central research questions in the study of non-use. In addition to a special issue proposal, we expect the research thread brought to the fore in this workshop will speak to foundational questions of use and the user in HCI. The workshop will center on discussion and agenda-setting around four guiding foci: - discussing theoretical grounding - identifying methodological approaches - creating a living bibliography - crafting a research agenda. The outcomes of these discussions will be used as the basis for proposing a special issue of a journal on non-use as an important theoretical concern. We request that participants submit 2-4 page position papers in the HCI Archive format that describe how non-use relates to their research, with an eye toward a longer piece that could be included in a special issue. Papers should include at least one suggestion for the living bibliography and speak to at least one of the guiding foci (theories, methods, or research agenda) of the author’s choosing. Papers will be accepted based on originality, quality, and how well they represent a range of disciplinary perspectives. Submissions from outside the HCI community (e.g., science and technology studies, the humanities, sociology, and others) are strongly encouraged. We will ask workshop attendees to engage in a week of reflexive technology non-use to inform workshop discussion sessions. We organize a workshop on participatory design for persons with cognitive or sensory impairments at CHI2014<http://pdwithimpairmentschi2014.wordpress.com/>in Toronto, Canada. This workshop will be held on April 26. Workshop on participatory design for users living with cognitive or sensory impairments Involving people with impairments in the design process is very challenging, especially when impairments affect cognitive or sensory functions. People with such impairments may have substantial problems with thought processes and communication, including understanding abstractions, sequencing thoughts and actions, understanding symbols, and interpreting social cues. Many participatory design techniques are based on these processes and are therefore not usable, or need to be adjusted for people with impairments. Workshop aims This workshop aims to: 1) bring together people who are active in the topic of the workshop to exchange ideas and experiences regarding participatory design techniques that were designed for, or adapted to people with impairments. 2) identify general guidelines for doing participatory design with people living with cognitive or sensory impairments. Workshop setup The workshop will start from the results of two workshops held at the Participatory Design Conference 2012 and INTERACT 2013 as well as from the experiences of the workshop's participants. Based on this, we will identify general guidelines for doing participatory design with people living with cognitive or sensory impairments. As such, much of the time schedule is reserved for formulating concrete guidelines that will help researchers and designers to streamline their activities and ‘standardize’ methodological practices. This full-day workshop has a creative, generative character. It will refrain from using a standard workshop setup of presentations and discussions. Sharing best practices, brainstorms and formulating guidelines in interactive group sessions will be at the core of all activities. Who should attend? Researchers and designers working on (a) design-oriented project(s) involving people with cognitive or sensory impairments are invited to participate. Especially those who have adjusted existing participatory design techniques to such users are encouraged to apply. Application People can apply by filling in one or more workshop cards (available from the workshop’s website <http://pdwithimpairmentschi2014.wordpress.com/>), describing their target group and a technique they used. In addition, applicants write a one-pager about their expectations of the workshop. At least one author of each accepted submission must attend the workshop. Learn Something New in the Desert this January

I think one of the truly great things about being academic is that we are always learning. But, one thing that has surprised me about this is how inefficient learning new areas and tools can be once you are out of graduate school. With the exception of a few well-known, but often pricey, statistical workshops, and an occasional ASA preconference workshops, there are not a lot of structured courses for faculty to take to efficiently learn new areas or tools. Arizona Sociology has been working to change that. We have hosted the Arizona Methods Workshop for the past three years, and will hold the Fourth Annual Arizona Methods Workshop from Jan 9-11, 2014. We hold it in January before most folks are back in classes to make it convenient and also to make Tucson an attractive refuge for folks from colder climates. I took two of the seminars last year (one on R and one on theoretical simulations) and both were excellent and really efficient ways to learn new material. I am writing to invite you to consider registering and attending this year. There are four seminars to choose from (and discounts for taking more than one seminar, as well as discounts for students), covering Atlas.ti, QCA, an introduction to R, and (my course) Managing Projects. You can find more details about the workshops at: http://sociology.arizona.edu/methods The workshop I am leading, "Managing Research Projects and Teams," was offered last year and was quite successful. It is designed for faculty who are about to scale up the size of project(s) they are working on and need some really practical ways to manage their research teams, and covers topics such as scalable training platforms (e.g., video-based training and computerized training modules) and communication and coordination platforms (e.g., project wikis, servers, and efficient collaborative tools in Google and other private providers). The seminar should also be helpful for younger investigators will benefit from a thorough introduction to key features of project management such as hiring, training, evaluation, time management, and coordination. The workshops are priced so that each additional workshop you take is less expensive than the prior one, and are scheduled to also encourage people to take multiple workshops. CFP Deadline of Feb 1st: Internet, Activism, and Social Movements Datasets

Please forward broadly: CFP for Use of Internet, Activism, and Social Movements Datasets >From 2006-2012, I had a NSF CAREER Award to collect data on online protest across 20 different issue areas. That effort produced two time-series datasets: a panel dataset tracking about 1,200 websites across 5 years, and a cross-sectional dataset tracking new samples of websites each year for five years. Each of these datasets is really two nested sets: one on the overall websites and one on all protest actions that were hosted or linked to from study websites. After discussions with potential users at the CBSM pre-conference in Las Vegas, several data collection team members and I designed a data release process based directly on potential user input that is engineered to develop a strong and informed user base and reviewing community for the dataset. The first step in that data release process is a limited use period in which potential users can apply to use the data while it is still embargoed. In exchange for early access, these early users will agree to support the development of a user community around the dataset in a variety of ways. (For folks that don't want to support a user community and just want their hands on the data, they will get that chance when the data is publicly released at the end of 2015.) We begin with such a broad question because, though the relationship between society and digital technologies is profound, we are only just beginning to make sense of their entanglement. Our understanding is limited, in part, because so much thinking about the Web is rooted in empirical analyses too disconnected from theory, from questions of power and social justice, and from public discourse. We need new priorities in our conversations about the Web. We invite you to propose a presentation for the fourth annual Theorizing the Web, which—by popular demand—is now a two-day event. Theorizing the Web is both inter- and non-disciplinary, as we consider insights from academics, non-academics, and non-“tech theorists” alike to be equally valuable in conceptualizing the Web and its relation to the world. In this spirit, we’ve moved the event away from conventional institutional spaces and into a warehouse. We have some plans for how to use this space to help rethink conference norms (and also to have some extra fun with this year’s event). We are looking for contributions that advance clear theoretical arguments; represent a diverse range of perspectives; embrace accessibility by demystifying jargon rather than using it as a crutch; and which, importantly, appeal to concerns of power, social (in)equality, and justice—themes that will also be emphasized in a keynote panel on race and social media. Full papers are not required in order to submit, and papers need not be in finished form when presenting. However, we plan to curate a proceedings for full papers, essays, and art connected to the conference. Because Theorizing the Web deeply values public engagement, we seek abstracts that clearly convey the logic of the argument being made and that have titles that appeal to a general audience. While we are open to different forms of presenting one’s work, we are giving priority to presentations that can be enjoyed by people outside the presenter’s field of expertise. We expect the same spirit of accessibility in accepted presentations. Submissions will be blindly reviewed by a selections committee, and we expect selection to be competitive; in past years, we have only been able to accept ~25% of submissions. Abstracts should be 300-500 words and focus on the argument being made and its conclusions. Only the first 500 words of the abstract will be reviewed.
