INPUTS / OUTPUTS: Inter-disciplinary Approaches to Causality in Engagement, Immersion, Presence and Related Concepts in Performance and Human Computer Interaction Conference Call for Papers EXTENDED INPUTS / OUTPUTS: Inter-disciplinary Approaches to Causality in Engagement, Immersion, Presence and Related Concepts in Performance and Human Computer Interaction University of Sussex Brighton, UK 26 June 2013 EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR CONTRIBUTIONS: 15 MARCH 2013 Engagement is much sought after in the public discourse of politics, theatre and education. Immersion, presence, and motivation attract further research to the engagement continuum. The goal of this symposium is to inspire an interdisciplinary spectrum of academics, practitioners and funders interested in deeper engagement (and related terms) toward novel collaborative solutions and projects. By mixing practitioners and researchers from arts, media and science, the conference will offer a platform for adaptation of discoveries made in other disciplines. The title “Inputs/Outputs” concerns the interaction between ‘sender’ and ‘receiver’. Examples of human-centred inputs are computer games, immersive theatre, novels, music, and classroom lessons; examples of outputs are emotions, memories, neural activities, physiological changes, and motivated behaviours. The rationale for the symposium is to improve the models for understanding the relationship between cause (pre-designed or scripted interventions) and effects (emotions, memories, neural activities) engendered in the audience or end-user. In interactive experiences, proposing causal relationships is made more difficult as human responses are sometimes conflated with causes. The symposium will focus its inter-disciplinary discourse on teasing apart scripted factors (inputs to the audience) that elicit or cause states like engagement, and on the human, observable effects that result from states like engagement (outputs from the audience). We welcome submissions on the central questions of the conference: * The relationship between physical, emotional, and intellectual engagement * Results from assessment and quantification of engagement in different fields * Methodologies and modalities for measuring engagement in different fields Other relevant topics include: rapport, immersion, ‘presence’, hypnotic absorption, neuroscience of engagement, interactional synchrony, engagement during interactivity in HCI, social signal processing, games, and the arts. Presentations should take the form of posters or 15-minute papers. We also welcome proposals for workshops or panels. For posters and individual papers, please submit a 250-word abstract as well as a short biographical note of 100 words. For panel and workshop proposals, please provide a brief outline of the session’s aims together with abstracts and biographical notes for each speaker and for the proposed panel chair or discussants. Please bear in mind that the conference is an interdisciplinary platform, and that submissions should be easily understood by an audience from outside of your discipline. Distance teaching and openly available educational resources on the Web are becoming common practices with public higher education institutions as well as private training organisations realising the benefits of online resources. However, while research in educational technologies has been focusing on solving interoperability issues by creating a variety of metadata formats and environments for the exchange of educational resources, this has led to a very fragmented landscape of Web standards and approaches. Consequently, it is not only the case that interoperability between repositories of educational resources remains a challenge, but also that educational Web resources remain underexploited, as their connection, reuse and repurposing are barely supported by such technologies. The very nature of the Linked Data approach offers promising solutions that can address these open challenges. In addition, the Linked Data movement has produced a vast body of knowledge and data which can substantially support and contribute to educational services and content. Building on the overwhelming success of earlier LILE editions, Linked Learning 2013 will bring together researchers and practitioners making innovative use of Linked Data technologies for educational purposes to discuss, exchange and disseminate their work. TOPICS OF INTEREST ================== LILE2013 aims to become a highly interactive research forum for exploring the promises of the Web of Linked Data in the broad area of education by gathering researchers from the areas of the Semantic Web, Social Web, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), Open Educational Repositories, and Education. We will welcome high-quality papers about actual trends in (a) how education takes advantage of the Web of Data, especially through Linked Data technologies and (b) how Linked Data principles are being applied in educational contexts. However, my worry is that the information being presented is too close to the "Freakonomics"/"Tipping Point" field. My question to the AoIR hive mind is does this presentation of information represent a new method of scholarship combining social theory with popular culture?

The birds (of a feather session on identity from the last AoIR conference) have turned into fish! We are looking for additional fish to fill our fishbowl on identity. Identity crosses multiple levels of analysis, from the individual to the organizational and international. This fishbowl presents an opportunity for researchers of identity to discuss quantitative and qualitative online and offline methods used to study identity. We welcome researchers who are questioning definitions of identity, deconstructing categories, pushing identity boundaries, and reconfiguring identification processes. Met Sara and her work today. Seemed fascinating and germane. Multiple Independent Inventions of a Non-Functional Technology: Combinatorial Descriptive Names in Botany, 1640-1830 Sara Scharf Abstract Historians and sociologists of science usually discuss multiple independent inventions or multiple independent discoveries in terms of priority disputes among the inventors. But what should we make of the multiple invention of a technology that not only gave rise to very few priority disputes, but never worked and was rejected by each inventors contemporaries as soon as it was made public? This paper examines seven such situations in the history of botany. I devote particular attention to the inventors cultural and educational backgrounds, in particular, the scholastic education most of them shared, through which they would have become familiar with Llullian combinatorics and the mnemonic names used to distinguish syllogistic moods. I also examine their conceptions of the roles of nomenclature in botany, their assumptions about how memory works, their awareness of other similar efforts, and their contemporaries reactions to their proposals. Planning AOIR fishbowl, need fish

Hello everyone, When I go to a conference, I try to avoid conference coma.Do you know that state? Simultaneously half asleep from time zone changes and overly caffeinated, and trying to look intently interested in yet another paper? Even when the presentations are brilliant and fascinating, listening for hours on end can put you at risk... Of course at AOIR we have the opportunity to avoid this fate, since Hector and the program committee have offered us the chance to give participatory open fishbowl sessions. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_(conversation)#Method) I'd like to offer one (what do you expect from someone named "Salmons"?), but am need of more fish. Would you like to join in and contribute to the lively and engaging nature of AOIR in the Mile High City? If so, please communicate to me off-list: jesalmons[at]gmail.com. Soon, please, the deadline is looming! Here is the proposed direction for the session: I am thinking about adapting the "Resistance and Appropriation" themes of the conference to look at the role of the researcher and the researched, the decisions we make, and the ethical implications. These are some broad organizing questions.... I'll consult with the fish to narrow them down, or add other themes, in developing our proposal: What are the processes through which we decide to use the Internet to collect data- and to share our findings? How do our choices about ways to use technology influence the data we collect-- from text to audio to media? What are the implications for researchers, for example, the new literacies needed to understand, analyze and explain visual and multi-media data? Or, how do we decide whether to publish in open-access journals? How are online practices common in social media and social networking adopted for online interviews, observations or data scraping, and what are the implications for researchers and those being studied? When do we appropriate others' writing in ways they do not necessarily expect? What are the ethical dilemmas for netizens as well as for researchers? What are the complex relationships between the researcher and researched online? Where are the points of resistance-- does anyone posting or tweeting have a way to resist having their writing scraped or collected by researchers? Will we see a backlash? I'd ask each speaker/participant to give a short statement about how he/she has addressed these kinds of issues and what questions they feel are unresolved or need more thought by the research community. As moderator, I will summarize the open questions. Then we'll invite audience members to join in the discussion by taking the "empty chair" to either respond to the questions on the table or add questions. Then I'll summarize the questions/recommendations at the end. I will record the session to capture the discussion. To be eligible for the 2013 AoIR Dissertation Award, a PhD dissertation in the area of internet research must have been filed in the 2012 calendar year. In addition to winning a cash prize, the individual will also be invited to present their research in a session at Internet Research14.0 in Denver, October 24-27, 2013. For the third year, AoIR will present an award for the best book published in internet research. This award seeks to recognize the best work in our field, and highlight the breadth of work that is done relating to the social and cultural dimensions of networked media. We will accept nominations (self and other) for Best Internet Research-Related Book published during the calendar year of 2012. Edited collections are not eligible; the book must explore a single topic and be authored or co-authored as a single text. The books will be reviewed by three eminent scholars in the field.
