First Call for Papers and Participation: The 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries Sponsored by: ASIS&T SIG Social Informatics and Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, Indiana University Saturday, November 2, 2013, 8:30-12:30 PM Centre Sheraton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Organizers: Howard Rosenbaum and Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University The purpose of this ASIST pre-conference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. This year, as we observe the 10th year since the passing of Rob Kling, we are particularly interested in papers that advance social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding. We are interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium theme is “the social informatics of information boundaries.” We are soliciting work that focuses on the critical analysis of the concept of information boundaries and boundary work from a Social Informatics perspective. Questions motivating the research could include (but are not limited to): - What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of information boundaries, boundary crossing, and boundary work? - What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain information boundaries and boundary work? - How do the social, technological, and informational boundaries evolve and shape each other? - How and to what extent can we enhance our understanding of information boundaries by drawing on sociological, organizational, and other social science theories? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2012 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. Re discussion of surveillance

Would that some of this discussion had taken place during the fall of 2001 and in the months and years following as the legal support structure was built through a variety of statutes, regulations, attorney general's opinions, executive orders, and other means! It will be very difficult to unravel logistically irrespective of any changes in the law or political mood at this point. For a longer historical background, an analysis of interactions between changes in the pertinent law and developments in society as understood via social science research, a theoretical and conceptual framework for thinking about this use of power by the informational state, and an opportunity to contextualize surveillance relative to the use of other informational tools by the state, CHANGE OF STATE: INFORMATION, POLICY, AND POWER (MIT Press, 2006/2009) may be of interest. Please circulate to potential candidates. *Four year doctoral project: The geography and political economy of software production* Funded by a European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award to Prof. Rob Kitchin, we are seeking a doctoral student to work on /The Programmable City/ project. The project will be based in the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. The production of software, like any industry, has a particular space economy to its creation and circulation. Its operations are organised and structured both sectorally and spatially to enable efficient production, and minimise costs and maximise profit. At a macro-level there is a geography of software development, so that whilst software creation takes place across the world, it is concentrated in key sites, for example, Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Boston, and Ireland, where there is an agglomeration of skilled labour, entrepreneurship, technologies, venture capital, and local tax and development regimes. At these sites, software is the product of a complex interplay of social, political and economic processes operating within and across scales. For other kinds of software production, such as open source projects, development is often more dispersed and distributed. This project will provide a detailed analysis of the geography and political economy of software development, with a particular focus on Boston and Dublin. It will involve case study research and interviews with company managers and agencies and organisations that seek to facilitate inward investment and indigenous start-ups (development agencies, business incubators, venture capitalists, etc). *Stipend **:* *EUR16,000 p.a, plus fees* The stipend is projected to increment by 8% per annum. Apologies for cross-posting HICSS 2014 Minitrack: Crowdsourcing content production and online knowledge repositories January 6-9, 2014 Big Island, Hawaii, USA Track: Digital and social media We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the Crowdsourcing mini-track for HICSS 2014 taking place at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii from Jan. 6-9th, 2014. In line with the track emphasis on promoting digital and social-media-related research, this minitrack aims to expand the scope of research in HICSS and bring to the conference researchers interested in cutting edge topics involving socio-technical issues of mass knowledge production and crowdsourcing online knowledge repositories. As various forms of collaboration are enabled (and constrained) by the affordances available in social media, researchers are investigating a range of issues including: 1) the diverse ways in which people collaborate to create, manage, curate and manipulate online content and how these activities affect digital repositories; 2) how those who manage these repositories are responding to the dynamics of online co-creation of content; 3) the dynamics of crowdsourced online collaborations and online communities of practice; and 4) the ways in which we can best describe the socio-technical interaction networks that facilitate and inhibit mass knowledge production. In this mini track we are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Hello all, I'll just chime in briefly in response to Rick's comments. My expertise is more on the commercial side of internet surveillance, but clearly this is deeply intertwined with gov activities. While the Patriot Act and post-911 ramp up of NSA surveillance is definitely a watershed moment of sorts, there were public policy battles in the late 1990s that really set the foundation for a regime of governance over data collection and use, fairly broadly conceived. Rotenberg should remember, he was on the front lines of a policy battle that on its face was about "opt-in" vs "opt-out" surveillance practices, but was really about whether federal regulation would mandate that individuals be given some control over the data produced by their internet use or whether a regime of industry/gov “self-regulation” (i.e. free for all) would be extended online. I realize that much of the specifics regarding the NSA leak are technically telecommunications, but from a normative view (and increasingly in practice), the internet/telecom distinction is not substantive. Just some historical perspective. BTW, I'm a longtime lurker and new member, who will be attending the Denver conference. Let's chat!
