Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award Call for nomination for the 2012 Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics (RKCSI) are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper written by a doctoral student on a topic informed by social informatics. Nominations may include a published paper in a peer reviewed journal during 2012 or a conference paper presented in 2012. The author or authors will present their paper at the 9th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on November 2 and receive a $500 cash award at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in Montreal. Nominations letters should be sent to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu) or Pnina Fichman (fichman(a)indiana.edu) by July 31, 2013 and must include a full citation, a brief explanation for the nomination, and a copy of the article. IR14: Earlybird, Hotel, Best Student Paper

tl;dr: * August 1 is the last day to register at the earlybird rate (and presenters' registration deadline). * Please reserve your room at the Westin * Matthew Crain wins the Best Student Paper award for the conference I hope you are all as excited about the upcoming IR14 conference in Denver as I am. I think we have a great line-up. As a reminder, the earlybird registration deadline--August 1--is rapidly approaching. Please note that if you become a member before registering, your total cost is less than if you register as a non-member. Also, if you are a presenter at the conference, you *must* register by August 1 so that we know you are coming. I'll make a plea for reserving at the conference hotel, the Westin Denver Downtown. Details on reserving your room can be found here: http://ir14.aoir.org/venue/ We budget around expected attendance at the hotel, and if we fail to meet our quota (as occurred in Seattle) we incur substantial penalties. So registering at the conference hotel is not only convenient for the conference, but a good way to make sure the conference remains economically sustainable. Some have encountered issues with the registration site saying that there are no more rooms available at the conference rate. If this happens, it may be that the conference rate is sold out for the Tuesday night only. We will continue to lift that number as possible, but we had not anticipated so many pre-conference attendees. In any case, that should not be an issue at present, but if we run through that allotment again, you may need to do a separate reservation for Tuesday night and for the the remaining conference nights. Last and best, we are happy to announce the best student paper for this year. Matthew Crain, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will be presenting "Financial Markets and Online Advertising Demand: Reevaluating the Dotcom Investment Bubble." The conference committee found his work to be promising and innovative, and I am looking forward to attending his presentation--and many others--this October. Best, Alex Halavais

Please direct inquiries and submissions to Josh Call jcall(a)grandview.edu or David Petroski petroskid1(a)southernct.edu. <petroskid1(a)southernct.edu> Call for Abstracts- Edited Collection on Games, Play, and Education "Playing to Learn; Learning from Play: Pedagogy and the Promise of Games" Much has been made recently of the connections between games and play, and the potential for generating positive learning environments. This edited collection, provisionally titled, "Playing to Learn, Learning from Play: Pedagogy and the Promise of Games" is designed for a broad academic audience and will feature essays and empirical research that either examine specific games or consider the function of play relative to pedagogical practice. We invite scholars and teachers to contribute to this edited collection of contributions exploring the connection between games, play, and education. This text imagines these elements broadly, and in multiple genres (digital games, social games, analog games, general play, etc.) Tentatively, we imagine the text being framed by the following two sections: *Theory*- This section will included critical scholarship on the potential for games and play as learning devices. Contributions should focus on the potential for learning as theoretically grounded concept focused on a specific game or play experience. *Practice*- This section will focus on practical applications of games and play to learning environments. Contributions should focus on presenting effective models of games and play as praxis elements relative to curricular design. Submissions from all academic disciplines and geographic regions are invited. The collection aims to advance theory and criticism by bringing different voices and perspectives into conversation. However, each section will be guided by its central framework, to bring theory and practice into conversation. All contributions must be the original work of the author and cannot be published elsewhere, unless author retains copyrights. For co-authored essays, all authors must agree to submission of work. For consideration, please send an abstract to jcall(a)grandview.edu by Oct 15th, 2013. Abstracts should be 500-750 words and must outline a theoretically grounded approach or pedagogical implementation of a specific game, set of games, or gamification framework. Submissions should include full contact information and institutional affiliation. Acceptance of abstracts will be determined by Dec. 1st, 2013. Final completed essays should be 7000 words (including notes and references) and Bloomsbury uses Chicago Manual of Style for references. Reprints will be considered on a case by case basis. Hi Nicholas I don't know how it's being sampled, but I did write some thoughts/bullet points about risks/potentials of such a tool a while ago http://people.kmi.open.ac.uk/knight/2013/01/evaluating-facebook-graph-search -as-an-epistemic-tool/ which included a link to Brian Kelly's post on its potential for research developments (how universities might use it for example). Given the social, and economic factors potentially involved as graph search develops I'm not sure I'd use it as a reliable/valid indicator of taste. Be interested to see if anyone has already done some work on it/is planning to. For Issue 5, we are seeking submissions under the theme of “Media and Methods for Opening Education.” This theme invites submissions that critically and creatively consider both media and methods that open up traditional educational settings to more democratic and diverse modes of learning and knowledge production. We are particularly interested in papers that express intriguing and promising ideas, demonstrate new media forms or educational software tools, or focus on research methods for opening education. Possible submission topics include, but are not limited to: - The development, implementation, and/or evaluation of pedagogical practices that draw on Open Education Resources (OER). - Explorations of Open Access, Open Source, and/or Open Data initiatives that address matters of race, class, gender, sexuality, and disability. - Critical considerations of corporate or proprietary media in pedagogical practices. - Feminist media and methodologies for challenging patriarchal structures in education. - Analyses of both the educational media and practices of civic movements such as the Free University, Occupy Data, or CryptoParty. - Hackathon methodologies: tools and practices. - Critical and participatory approaches to facilitating MOOCs. - Engaging local communities in public research and/or education through civic media. - Interactive platforms and practices that queer traditional educational boundaries between teacher/student as well as inside/outside the classroom, unfixing these binaries so as to reconsider our norms and what they leave unsaid. - Critical appropriations of queer, feminist and/or radical praxis to address ITP matters such as universal access. - Visualizing research products for diverse publics. - Best practices for collaborating in heterogeneous spaces. - Anti-disciplinary approaches to problem solving and the public domain. In addition to traditional long-form articles, we invite submissions of audio or visual presentations, interviews, dialogues, or conversations, creative works, manifestos, jeremiads or other scholarly materials. All submissions are subject to an open peer review process. Submissions received that do not fall under the specific theme of Issue 5, but do fall under the broader theme of JITP, will be considered for publication in a future issue.
