Hi AOIR-ers, Rey Junco and I are working on a cool research project, and are looking for a post doc! Please see application here: http://umjobs.org/job_detail/91635/post_doctoral_associate The position will entail working closely with us to design studies exploring outcomes associated with use of a series of new apps, websites, and games designed to address college access issues. We will have tons of data and hope to find the perfect person to help us turn these data into bright and shiny new papers! >From the ad: The Post Doctoral Associate will assist with a one-year research project entitled Evaluating The Effectiveness of Social Media for Improving College Access. The goal of the project is to assess the effectiveness of a series of software products and social media applications designed to address college access issues. These products were funded by the College Knowledge Challenge project: see www.collegeknowledgechallenge.org/. The post-doc will work closely with Drs. Ellison and Junco to design, conduct, and write up a series of studies using server-level and survey data. The postdoc will be an equal member of the research team. S/he will be expected not only to assist with the research but to take the lead in working with external groups (such as schools and software developers), designing and implementing research studies, and working with the rest of the project team. The postdoc will be expected to contribute substantially to publications resulting from the project, including acting as first author on some and as a secondary author on others. The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas: *Manipulating and analyzing quantitative data sets *Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques *Conducting outcomes assessments *Understanding of or interest in young people, college access, and educational technologies or social media more broadly *Conducting literature reviews and writing up research results *Ability to work effectively with a research team *Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with external parties such as technology developers and K-12 contacts *Ability to independently plan and implement research projects Required Qualifications A Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, including but not limited to education, communication, information studies, psychology, or sociology, completed no later than June 30, 2014. Strong quantitative analysis and survey design skills and experience are required. Familiarity with the college access and educational technology literatures is desired. [Apologies for cross posting] The deadline for submissions has been extended to this Friday, January 24th. =================================== Biological Rhythms and Technology http://pac.cs.cornell.edu/rhythms/ Workshop at CHI 2014 Toronto, Canada, April 27th 9.00am – 6.00pm We are constantly changing. Every week. Every day. Every minute. Our bodies coordinate many physiological and mental changes to help us adapt to our environment. As a consequence of these fluctuations, we can be more suited to certain types of activities at specific times of the day. Disruptions of our rhythms can have serious impacts on our sleep, productivity, and well-being. In spite of these natural fluctuations, the technologies we use to work and to communicate respond identically throughout the day to our interactions. However, a new class of technologies has emerged that takes our biological rhythms into account. This interactive workshop will bring together researchers interested in designing technologies to support biological rhythms. We invite participants from a range of disciplines (including sleep, well-being, and mental health) to take part in this workshop to discuss the design and development of technology to support individual rhythms; social impacts of measuring these physiological, behavioral, and mental changes; and feedback interventions to help people become more aware of these changes. The goal of the workshop is to create a community around incorporating an awareness of biological rhythms into the design of technology How to participate Submit a 2-4 page paper in the ACM Extended Abstract format about your ongoing work, recent results, or study methods related to biological rhythms. At least one author of each accepted papers must attend the workshop and all participants much register for the workshop and attend at least one day of the conference. New BA Digital Culture at King's College London

Dear all, I hope this will be of interest to a few of you as another part of developing research and teaching on the internet and the digital. We're launching a single honours undergrad degree BA Digital Culture in London, recruiting now but first intake in September 2015. We are aiming at a non-programming course that focuses on cultural and social analysis of the effects of the internet and the digital. There'll be some chances for 'hands on' stuff, including digital methods, but the primary focus is the kinds of cultures we research. Apologies for cross posting Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on The Ethics of Cyber Conflicts GUEST EDITORS Ludovica Glorioso (NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence) INTRODUCTION In the age of the so-called information revolution, the ability to control, disrupt or manipulate the enemy’s information infrastructure has become as decisive as weapon superiority with respect to determining the outcome of conflicts. So much so that the Pentagon defines cyberspace as a new domain in which war is waged, alongside land, sea, air and space. Cyber conflicts, as part of a state’s defensive or offensive strategy, are a fast growing phenomenon, which is rapidly changing the dynamics of combat as well as the role that warfare plays in political negotiations and the life of civil societies. Such changes are not the exclusive concern of the military. They also have a significant bearing on ethicists and policymakers, since existing ethical theories of war, together with national and international regulations, struggle to address the novelties of this phenomenon. The issue could not be more pressing and there is a much felt and fast escalating need to share information and coordinate ethical theorising about cyber conflicts. This special issue of Springer’s Philosophy & Technology (http://www.springer.com/13347) follows the organization of the international workshop on Ethics of Cyber Conflict (http://www.ccdcoe.org/428.html) held on November 21-22, 2013 at the Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa (CASD) with the support of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence. TOPICS We solicit the submission of papers that investigate issues concerning the way ICTs are affecting our ethical views of conflicts and warfare, as well as the analysis of just-war principles in the light of the dissemination of cyber conflicts; humanitarian military interventions based on ICTs; whether preventive acts of cyber war may satisfy jus-ad-bellum criteria; challenges of upholding jus-in-bello standards in cyber warfare, especially in asymmetric conflicts; attribution and proportionality of the response to cyber attacks; moral permissibility of automated responses and ethical deployment of military robotic weapons. We invite you to submit your work to the Ten Years of Facebook: The Third Argumentor Conference *Ten Years of Facebook: The Third Argumentor Conference* 4-6 September 2014, Oradea / Nagyvárad, Romania This year marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of Facebook, the most ubiquitous social media and communication platform in the world. It also gives us the opportunity to take a step back and examine increasingly important questions about how Facebook and the new social web have impacted the world of communication, from debate, discourse and rhetoric to philosophy, politics, social context, and other forms of new media. Has Facebook been constructive or disruptive in these different areas - or perhaps both? How does the ease and ubiquity of online communication affect longstanding national, generational, ideological, gender and class divides?
