Hello AoIR fellows, Those of you who work at the intersection of Internet technology and International Relations may be aware that in March, we had a new section approved at the International Studies Association (ISA) conference in Toronto. Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) will allow us to share our work in a more focused way and also to begin incorporating work from other disciplines that have relevance for understanding the implications of technology for global politics. It should have special resonance with many of you who work on political aspects of Internet technology. Next year in New Orleans, we will present our inaugural program and I wanted to extend an invitation to any of you who may be interested to submit a paper or a panel/roundtable proposal. Madeline Call for Papers: International Studies Association 2015 Annual Convention Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) Section Deadline: 1 June 2014 http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/NewOrleans2015/Call.aspx The newly chartered ISA section on Science, Technology, Art and International Relations (STAIR) recognizes that science, technology, and art are critical to global politics. They shape much of the everyday reality of international security, statecraft, development, design of critical global infrastructures, approaches to social justice, and the practices of global governance. Science, technology and art (i.e., in the form of creativity, the arts, architecture and design) permeate international affairs in the form of material elements and networks, technical instruments, systems of knowledge and scientific practices. They challenge existing conceptual approaches and prompt us to step beyond IR canons to seek inter-disciplinary collaborations. Through this new section we seek to generate the space for International Relations as a discipline to engage these matters through productive intellectual conversations with existing subsections as well as with other disciplines. STAIR will facilitate theoretical understandings of how we go about creating, assessing, and deliberating scientific, technological and artistic design and their impact on the shifts of contemporary world order. At the next ISA in New Orleans, (February 18th-21st) STAIR seeks to engage particularly with the impact of science, technology and art on ‘global IR’ and how scientific and artistic practices, technological infrastructures and artistic performances open up global understandings of international and global affairs. Requesting recommendations on interesting digital ethnographies

Dear colleagues, I'm teaching a graduate seminar next year on digital ethnographies and I'm covered when it comes to methodology papers or "the usual suspects" doing ethnogrpahies at AoIR. However, i am looking for interesting ethnographies i might not be aware of, ones that might be transgressive in nature, presenting new challenges or dealing with marginalized or unique populations. Much of the software I can find when searching online is linked to market research companies. I'm looking for packages that I can use independently of a market research company. Any suggestions? In Digital Labour and Karl Marx, Christian Fuchs attempts to answer that question, crafting a systematic critical theorisation of labour as performed in the capitalist ICT industry. The book ''Digital Labour and Karl Marx'' shows that labour, class and exploitation are not concepts of the past, but are at the heart of computing and the Internet in capitalist society. It argues that we therefore need an engagement with Karl Marx’s theory to understand digital and social media today. The work argues that our use of digital media is grounded in old and new forms of exploited labour. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Weibo and other social media platforms are the largest advertising agencies in the world. They do not sell communication, but advertising space. And for doing so, they exploit users, who work without payment for social media companies and produce data that is used for targeting advertisements. The book presents case studies that show that users’ activities on corporate social media is just one form of digital labour. Their usage is enabled by the labour of slaves and other highly exploited workers extracting minerals in developing countries, hardware assemblers in China, California and other parts of the world who face extremely hard working conditions that remind us of the industrial labour that Karl Marx described in 19th century Britain, low paid software engineers and information service workers in developing countries who provide labour for transnatio nal ICT companies in the West, highly paid and highly stressed software engineers at Google and other Western ICT companies, or e-waste workers who disassemble computers under toxic conditions. The case studies in Fuchs’ book show that the profitability of ICT companies is built on the lives and deaths of a global class of exploited workers whose labour is anonymously connected an international division of digital labour. epistemology, process, method, policy, generalization... not "quant or qual"

Excellent reminder of primary source/context and debate, David! Trust Terri to ask the questions that lead us back to sources:) The comparison of method in the preface for that work also contrasts Moliere's so-called flat character descriptions to more complex character sketches by Cervantes and Shakespeare. I would say though that the issues raised in Malinowski's book are still relevant - in terms of epistemology. Of *how* we acquire the information and build it up as knowledge that then feeds into world views. Two points I'd like to raise: 1] if we take away the moralizing that seems implicit in "armchair" vs "hands-on" research - what might we learn from each in relation to internet research methods? I'm not sure that these are mutually exclusive if we want a larger overall picture. 2] Going back to Malinowski's issue with what he terms "armchair theorizing" should also remind us of the policy implications of the research we do - and the reason that generalizing based on partial information and developing policy that is "generalizable" is problematic. just my 2 cents.
