*Assistant Professor – Data Analytics and New Media * *Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT)* The Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Data Analytics and New Media. This appointment will begin July 1, 2016. Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in researching new media using a computational social science approach. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Social or Computer Science, or a related field, by date of appointment or shortly thereafter. Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated through publications in leading journals, presentations at competitive conferences, awards, and strong endorsements by referees. Postdoctoral position - digital media and civic mobilization

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position in the Department of Communication, Media and Film at the University of Calgary, Canada. The postdoctoral scholar will carry out research on social movements and collective action in relation to digital media and civic mobilization in Canada and internationally. S/he will collaborate with Professor Maria Bakardjieva and her team on projects investigating the ways in which important public issues become an object of civic deliberation and mobilization employing digital, and specifically, social media. Social movements and the role of digital media as key tools in the pursuit of their goals is a topic of high political importance as has been demonstrated by numerous events internationally and in Canada. Dr. Bakardjieva is leading two projects in this research area: Social Media and Civic Culture: Investigating Emerging Practices of Democratic Participation in Canada, funded through a SSHRC Insight Grant, and New Media and the Dynamics of Civil Society in the New EU Democracies: Retooling Citizenship in the Baltics and the Balkans funded by the Swedish Baltic Sea Foundation. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in both projects with a focus on theorizing the technological mediation and expansion of the action repertoires of contemporary social movements. S/he will be instrumental to the empirical investigation of Canadian cases of civic participation facilitated by social media as stipulated by the Social Media and Civic Culture project. The postdoctoral scholar will bring expertise on the theory of social movements and collective action. S/he will be responsible for data collection and analysis pertaining to a number of case studies of civic engagement using social media in Canada. S/he will work with Dr. Bakardjieva and other team members to develop conceptual bridges across a range of different cases. Please note the September 15 deadline for abstracts. Guest Editors: Stine Lomborg and Mette Mortensen (University of Copenhagen) The concept of crossmedia has primarily been associated with the production of media content for multiple platforms. At the same time, media users also cross media – they combine, juggle, and move almost seamlessly between various media platforms and services: to pursue information and entertainment, to communicate about and undertake tasks, and respond to demands in their everyday lives. Mobile media such as smartphones and tablets with ubiquitous internet access epitomize this development and converge various media on a single multi-purpose platform. A key observation in the current, digital media landscape is that media use – from television to telephones – is increasingly personalised, fragmented and connective. Blurring the boundaries not only between users and producers, but also between amateurs and professionals, laymen and experts, this development has prompted new forms of participation (collaboration, co-creation etc), and, consequently, new terms such as produsers, citizen journalists, prosumers etc. Crossmedia use transforms interpersonal communication, journalism, political communication, cultural consumption, celebrity culture, and many other central areas and aspects of society. But how might new types of users – and forms of crossmedia use – be defined? How do users combine and reinterpret the relationship between so-called 'old' and 'new' media? And to what extent are traditional distributions of power challenged and changed by the ability of users to circulate content on and across multiple platforms? Understanding how individual media users cross media, and how they organise and make meaning in networks of media, is pivotal to furthering academic scholarship on crossmedia and the contemporary media user. This speial issue of Convergence aims to develop the conceptualisation and analysis of contemporary crossmedia use and users in order to study the implications for users themselves as well as for media companies and society at large. Scholars have shown new (or renewed) interest in topics such as morality, cooperation, altruism, wisdom, meaning, purpose, hope, flow, human growth and development, courage, empathy, spirituality, health, public service, self-control, emotional intelligence, and character strengths. The past decade especially has witnessed a surge in research on two types of exceptional individuals and groups who best exemplify these positive qualities: heroes and heroic leaders (1). The shift brought about by the humanistic movement in psychology in the mid 20th century, coupled with the increased momentum of positive psychology in this century has substantially changed the dialogue toward human strengths (2), signaling a move away from a deficits based view in clinical and non-clinical settings. This shift ultimately gave rise to a serious re-examination of heroism from an empirical perspective (3), and the extremes of human experience in (usually) positive activity undertaken for the betterment of others. Although humanistic, existential and positive psychology overlap when examining heroism, each bring distinct perspectives and methodological strengths. This special issue of JHP seeks papers drawing on a wide range of approaches to explore heroism, including quantitative studies, philosophical and theoretical inquiry, phenomenological approaches, qualitative research, and multi-method efforts. Papers integrating contemporary research and commentary, with perspectives drawn from humanistic, existential, transpersonal, narrative, spiritual, cultural or transrational psychology will be looked on favourably. POTENTIAL TOPICS: While not representing an exhaustive list, the following topic areas highlight important research themes: -- Heroism as an authentic state and self-actualization. -- Phenomenological readings of heroism and the heroic state of consciousness, e.g. heroism and eudaimonia, synergy, creativity, holistic learning and healing, spirituality, fear (existential angst), tragedy, trauma, freedom, transcendence, love. -- The relationship between religion, spiritual traditions and heroism. -- Humanistic analyses of creative representations of heroism and hero archetypes in the popular media, new media (e.g. social media and blogs), gaming, digital humanities, creative arts. -- Heroic identity as personal and social empowerment. -- Shadow aspects of the heroic psyche. -- The synergies and tensions between humanistic, existential and positive psychological observations of heroism. -- Multidisciplinary psychological testing methods and empirical observations of heroic behaviour. Facebook triggering API

Dear members, I'm wondering if you have any leads on how to find/implement a Facebook API that tracks the behavior of users and when (consenting!) participants do a particular activity on Facebook (i.e. write Wall post), they receive an experience sampling survey on their mobile phones a few minutes afterwards. Most likely, the answer is to develop the API oneself. However, I know that such an API has already been implemented and I'm wondering if you know of any resources (particularly for communication researchers who aren't expert programmers), such as web pages, tutorials, or software that may help in implementing such a 'Facebook triggering' system.
